  1. Tsunami waves travel at about 800km/h across the deep ocean, around 80km/h when they hit the coastline... Shocking to see it ripping houses as if they were just models
  2. Ah ah ! You're absolutely right !
  3. No... Here in France we are some kind of leader in this field. 80 % of our electric energy comes from nuclear. As you do, they say nuclear energy is THE cleanest, greenest source of energy. They just "forget" to mention some contrary little things. Downsides are : mining, shipping, cooling, dumping and dismantling. When you take this into account, it's not greener, it's not cleaner, it's not cheaper. It's just a future disaster.
  4. What about Windscale (UK), Saint-Laurent-des-Eaux (FR), Monticello (US), Three Mile Island (US), Tucson (US), Tsuruga (JP), Tchernobyl (Ru), Biblis (Ger), Vandellos (Spain), Snovosi Bor (ru), Gironde (FR), Paks (Hungary), Forsmark (Sweden) ?... No earthquake involved indeed... But nuclear pollution for sure. And just for the known and civilian ones ! Have you heard about the military ones, when they loose some atomic bomb ? The big difference : if it breaks a hydro power station, there are no consequences for thousands years. No cancer caught AFTER the disaster. Not the same deal with nuclear.
  5. Wanna laugh a bit ? Do you know what french government said when the nuclear cloud was slowly gliding to France from Tchernobyl ? It's really funny in retrospect. They said : "Stay quiet. The radioactive dust should stop at the frontier". Fortunately, we got video tapes... What else ? Want me to tell you about what this industry names "sterile" ? It's so funnier than the story about the gentle cloud (irony).
  6. I do agree Alan. Didn't know NZ was thinking about using nuclear power :-? I thought the last nuclear firecracker in the Pacific would have disgusted for life.
  7. Frightening... Absolute helpless feeling. And a nuclear power station has been damaged...
  8. So may be we should inform Paul Watson about that probability. Dr Ira, would you do that please ? ps : you're right Living Art.
  9. Hi fordayzbro, I wish you could set up the second one ! Mixed stone and wood is beautiful and it looks like more wild than the first one. Sure you can do that. :bounce:
  10. Dunno... Another one I found. Over 200 cetaceans come ashore on the beaches of Australia and New Zealand in december 2004. An undersea megathrust earthquake occurred on Sunday, December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.
  11. According to you, is there a possible link between the earthquake and the 107 whales found beached at Mason Bay ? In february 2010, 28 pilot whales have been found dead after a stranding at a remote Stewart Island beach. Chilean earthquake occurred off the coast on February 27, 2010 (magnitude of 8.8 ). The previous stranding happening in 2003, when almost 160 died. Someone remember when it was exactly ? (*) Because a particularly destructive earthquake happened in Iran in december 2003. I'm just thinking aloud. [Edit] (*) found --> 16 November 2003: 12 sperm whales die after stranding on Auckland's west coast

  13. I didn't know Chch was the only city in New Zealand that doesn't add chlorine. I read the water supply was expected to be chlorinated for a number of months... http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/christchurch/597004
  14. I read you're finally ok about this but here are some advices I can give. About cycling, you can put fish in an uncycled tank for 7 or 10 days. It depends on how many they are and their size (small, middle, big). If you have water but no power No pb. Just do some water change every week. Feeding As low as possible. Two or three time per week. Filter If you have no filter, the most important is to keep water movement. So a mere water pump will be usefull. Temperature Temperature is presently 14 to 23°C in Chch ? A lot of tropical fish could survive in. As it is written in NZ aquarium world of this month, cooler water slows down a fish's metabolism. 20-23° is not a pb for most of the fish. Water Weather report forecast it might be rainy on wednesday (Chch). For those who can, try to gather rain water from gutters for instance. Tank No more tank ? You can use garbage cans too as I do for my fish summer camp. It works well, without any filter for fews days (about 1 week) in case of uncycled garbage can lol or for several months if you have some fast growing plants in it and/or about 8 cm of soil. You can use sand from your garden or potting soil because it contains bacteria. Just check Ph and if it's not polluted by chemicals, pesticides or something. More info about NPT (Natural planted tank) here, step by step : - http://thegab.org/Plants/step-by-step-setting-up-a-walstad-type-natural-planted-tank.html NPT method works very well. I checked it last year. Water changes are rarely needed with. Diana Walstad is microbiologist and study, among other things, the amount of plant filtering action. - (Interview)http://www.aquariss.net/intervjui/en-diana-walstad-natural-planted-tanks.html Hope it could help some of you.
  15. Can't do anything from here but reading news and thinking of you all.
  16. http://www.wellington.govt.nz/news/display-item.php?id=4338 Be sure you are not alone. Lots of people help you. Hard to believe but before making any donation, especially on line, check it's a secure channel. Some could try to take advantage of the situation.
  17. Here is a Google map with markers to locate water supplies, operational ATMs and petrol stations, supermarkets open... http://maps.google.co.nz/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=205972314722231895961.00049cd3bc095df8c4355&ll=-43.516689,172.629547&spn=0.348556,0.583649&z=10&source=embed Hope it could help.

  19. I read this : "A truck is delivering supplies from Wellington to Christchurch. You can drop things off at 44 Wigan St, CBD before 5pm Thursday" Blankets, bottled water, torches, gloves, tin food (preferably food that doesn't need heating), batteries, toilet paper, baby supplies... http://eq.org.nz/reports/view/105
  20. Oh yes, Grant's right if it's a filament bulb. Sorry Donna, I didn't read well your post. Is it a bulb like this one ? http://images.philips.com/is/image/PhilipsConsumer/924757140102_NA-GAL-global?wid=358&hei=268&$jpglarge$
  21. I'm afraid you should avoid it because of the mercury / vapors of mercury. Try not to touch the broken bulb with your hands, use rubber gloves and throw them after.
  22. My thoughts are with all of you too.
