This is how I catch my shy fish. Big glass jar and some food. Helps if you stack rocks/wood around outside and to the back of it so they think its a nice safe place to hide. Once they are in, cover the opening and take all the rocks off. This also works for fast schooling fish that try and hide from the net

forktail rainbows are cool little fish, tend to hang out at the surface

Try calling a butchers (mad butcher or butcher jacks) to see if they have off cuts or some kind of bulk order. Also I recommend ringing a vet for info (think Forrest Hill vets has a vet there who is an advocate for this kind of diet but I might be wrong, can't remember her name). You don't want your dog to become deficient in anything, so I would do some research so you have the right composition of diet Huskies are notoriously picky tho, they are essentially working dogs that can go for a long time without food in the snow (compared with other breeds).

they get bigger than that too. Some weird black jumping beetle thing. My kids LOVE them, are forever turning over the wood pile and rocks to watch them jump away. They like moisture/humidity I think, but are not aquatic. -
There are loads in hawkes bay. Or if thats too far try coromandel (might find some gold too LOL)

I wouldn't worry too much if you don't see them drinking, only if you see them constantly drinking IYKWIM? They probably drink out of puddles and the dog next doors bowl  Good news about liver and kidneys, and that she has stopped acting strange. Hopefully the threat of a day at the vets has cured her of her weird ways

Also if your tank still has nitrite you are still in the danger zone, I would drop the feeding back to a light feed once every 3 days until your nitrite level is zero. Feed light for a while to reduce the fish waste being produced until your bacteria can catch up.

Depends how big your pot is I guess! Mine were only 9cm diameter pots. Hacksaw worked a treat. I also cut some little "doorways" in mine, and turned them upside down. Two cuts parallel and then snap off the little bit, if that makes sense.
-
you mean terracotta pots? I gave mine to my husband, he took them away and brought them back in perfect halves If you don't have anyone to delegate to, *I guess* you can do it yourself just using a hacksaw. Wetting them just reduces the dust, they are actually quite easy to cut. Hardest part is holding them still.

Get some seachem Prime as it is the best water conditioner IMO and will also detoxify nitrite and nitrate if you use a bigger dose. You will need to be doing partial water changes every day to help the fish to cope until the filter cycles, I personally would do around 20-40% depending on how much nitrite you have got. Once you are testing negative then you can drop the water changes back a bit but still be careful with them for the next few weeks and don't go too long between as your fish will be stressed and weak from the nitrite (and the ammonia that came before the nitrite). If you can get some filter media from a tank already cycled then it will speed up the process. Good luck, I did the same thing myself when I started out. Baptism of fire!  Be prepared tho that you may start to get problems such as ich, etc in the weeks to come as the stress of the cycling tank takes its toll on the fish, and you may lose some of the less robust and more sensitive fish. Hopefully tho with diligent and careful water changes you can save most of them.

I can try, he has been banished to the tank downstairs. My camera is not great, she was just very cooperative and had her babies literally right next to the glass. Taking pics of fish normally is an absolute nightmare with my camera, tried for ages yesterday to get a pic of DD's new dragon fighter but he just would not stay still long enough for my crappy camera! gah :an!gry She is lovely, for a while I thought she might have been a he because she has colour in her dorsal fin and her tail fin was a bit ragged when she came into the shop, so I couldn't see if it had points or not. So was vy pleased when she proved herself a woman Babies are out and about, tried to feed them a tiny bit of soaked decap BS but their mouths looked too small! There is lots of moss there so hopefully they get enough from that.

cats

Well, just keep your eyes open for anything out of the ordinary for the next few days. Cats are often not very helpful when it comes to these things, far too private  Sometimes if they jump up and drink out of places like the sink/bath/basin/ shower, that might be a sign they are drinking more than they normally do. But then, some cats just drink out of the shower routinely anyway!

A vet would tell you that you can't diagnose over the internet. This cat sounds like it will need a good thorough checkover and maybe some blood tests to figure out what is wrong. Hyperaesthesia simply means "abnormal increase in sensitivity" - it sounds like something that would be diagnosed only if all other tests came back negative but the symptoms still persist.... and (as said in the wiki) it is rare. Anything can increase sensitivity - a cut, abscess, dermatitis, sore tummy, headache - all of these would make me a bit twitchy! Good luck on saturday, hopefully you get an answer and she can be treated. Until then, it is likely the vet will ask you how much she is drinking and peeing each day, whether she is eating, and if she has diarrhoea, so until Sat maybe pay attention to these things as they might give important information.

Ugh... I think my guppies all have Ich...
Sunbird73 replied to aquariumbeginner32's topic in Coldwater
Guppies are not true coldwater fish, and really do best over 20 degrees. Its quite possible that overnight your temp is dropping below that (my tank water will drop to 16 or less without a heater in my house overnight) and they are getting stressed. Change the water and add salt tho, better to have clean water. I would take the chill off a little tho doing a water change at night the water will be very cold coming out of the tap. -

Test the water if you can for ammonia/nitrite etc. Do a waterchange first and then add the salt. Won't hurt to gravel vac first, will help clean up the tank. What temp is your tank at? -
hmmm... I recently had a filter cycle again after being set up for a year, after I changed to a very soft, blackwater type arrangement. This might explain a LOT.

Wow, just incredible.... mesmerising

They are the redtails that came in recently. The female is quite nice, has a bit of colour on her tail & dorsal fin as well so hopefully if I can grow the babies they will have good colour too. I am planning on leaving them with the female (half the fun is watching her with them ), the male got kicked out as soon as I saw the eggs. She has moved them out of the cave this afternoon, I put the tiniest drop of diluted liquifry amongst them with a syringe & airline tubing, some appear to be picking around but not a huge amount of activity yet so I will not feed them anymore until I see them swimming & actually picking at things - hopefully tomorrow afternoon? Yes, interesting about the harem. So many places say that a 60/30/30 would be ok for a small harem - and also say that a single female will get beaten up by the male in a smaller tank like this, so two females are preferable. But as soon as I had trouble and searched aggressive female caca, there were many ppl that say pair breeding is the only thing that works for them, and they have lost females to a dominant female in a harem.
-
Also FYI - trigger for spawning was to put the female in time-out ... I introduced a new female (to give a 1M:2F ratio as recommended everywhere  ) but the original female beat the crap out of her, so put her in a breeder trap for a day while I sorted out moving the new female. She had not shown any interest in the male beforehand at all, but literally as soon as I let her out of the breeder trap she checked out all the caves and invited the male in for some special time. Eggs later that night.

My cockatoos have been doing the wild thing and she kindly laid her eggs in the cave right next to the glass. The babies are still in the cave but the egg sac looks to be gone... when do I feed them? photo log for those that are interested Eggs - she laid them on the bottom of the pot so I had to rotate it for her so they were on the roof wigglers a few hours after hatching, were clearly wiggling Day 4 after hatching Today - Day 5 after hatching (8 days from eggs laid) So do I feed them today? I can't see an egg sac, she is keeping them in the cave but they can swim/ hop short distances... Or shall I wait until tomorrow?

Hope she is ok, could be any number of things. Hope its one of the benign easy treated ones.

saw this today on seek: http://www.seek.co.nz/Job/trainee-zoo-keeper-reptiles-038-invertebrates-auckland-zoo-rfa/in/auckland-auckland-central/20195000 what an awesome job this would be for someone who loves their reptiles and frogs. I don't think I could do the tarantulas tho ... I like looking at them through the glass knowing they can't get me, but don't think I could handle them ....
