  1. If she was the only one with the curvature it would more likely be through damage rather than genes. I still would not have bred from her but if she and the fry are only for food then it won't matter.
  2. There is certainly a list of fish that are not allowed to be imported. It is put out by MAF (or whatever they call themselves these days)
  3. I believe they may be egg layers.
  4. By the Glenfield club I assume you are referring to the North Shore? As a non-Aucklander I have no idea where the different suburbs are. I don't believe any of the North Shore club are signed up here. Perhaps you can persuade them to do so at their next meeting
  5. Danios are a schooling fish and the biggest is usually the leader who bullies the others. If you have a group of them it doesn't matter because, even if he is bullying 24/7 he has lots to bully so all of them get a rest at some point. I wonder if your sick danio has had more than his fair share of bullying and in an attempt to get away may have damaged his underside on a rock or other sharp object. The colouring around the gills indicates a problem. I would separate the sick danio so you can keep a close eye on it and check for secondary infections starting. It will also give him recovery time. Perhaps you might consider getting a few more danios to keep the bully occupied. 6 or more is best for schooling fishes.
  6. I would go with the Java too. Also, you can line your light reflector with aluminium foil to get good reflection.

The Napier group - serious??? I think you have the wrong group  Try it and see for yourself.
  8. Never heard that name bikiegirl. I know guppies are called millions fish but would not have thought leopardfish prolific enough to earn a similar name. You never know though!
  9. I'm sorry you did not get a reply. Perhaps they are away at the moment. Hopefully you get some help from Bryce. Otherwise, ring Kim Dunnett at Pupuke Aquarium as she is currently the president of the club.

    Guppies!

It would be faster to ask who hasn't got into breeding guppies at some point! A couple of members here were talking about setting up a guppy club but I am not too sure whether they have done anything about it yet. There are a few interested in line breeding.
  11. Hi Matt, I thought I felt someone looking over my shoulder! Must have been you Yes, there are 3 clubs in Auckland. North Shore has a club that meets the 1st Tuesday of the month in the Sunnynook Community Centre, 148 Sycamore Dr, Sunnynook, 7.30pm President is Kim Dunnett (Pupuke Aquarium) and the secretary is Sue Tremayne. South Auckland Aquarium & Watergarden Soc (formerly Manurewa Aq & WG Soc) meet for dinner on the 2nd Monday of the month. Contact Mike for details 09 537 1791 Auckland Fishkeepers meet in the Green Bay Community Centre, 2nd Tuesday of the month, at 7.30pm. Their president is Maurice Dormer and secretary Piet Bakker.
  12. Java will do OK. I also managed to keep water sprite because it grew faster than the goldfish could eat but they tend to eat the root end first so the top half dies off. I planted some and left others floating. Have you any safe streams nearby? Go down with a bucket and get oxygen weed.
  13. I always found my WCMMs spawned in cooler water and were more colourful but another member found the opposite! Perhaps it depends on what temperature they were raised in. They come from cold waters so it makes sense they would prefer a lower temp.
  14. People prefer males as they are more colourful. If you have too many males and not enough females they hassle the females continually until the poor girls die from exhaustion. If you wanted them for their colour you could get all males.

    move

I agree with Ira. Those canisters really stink if they go off! Have you continued to keep the old filters running on the temporary tanks? This will save you having to cycle the tank again.
  16. It's more descriptive than 'gonopodium'
  17. It can be quite hard to sex guppies until they get a little colour as the vital dangly bit doesn't show up too well when they are small and relatively colourless
  18. I don't feed my fish when I am away. They have plenty to graze on. Mind you, I am talking relatively small fish, not large cichlids. I would put the right amounts in small containers labelled with the day of the week you want it added to the tank.
  19. I forgot to say I removed the plants from the tank and treated them separately, I didn't treat the tank itself. I am sure your way is better Warren
  20. Can't think of anything worse! Why anyone would pay anything for one of these ugly things I have no idea.
  21. Are you thinking 'cyanobacteria' too Rob? If you have this blue/green algae it is very difficult to get rid of. I am fighting it myself. Erythromycin is the answer but hard to get. I am lucky I work for a doctor so am able to get it when required. Somewhere in this forum is a question from me about this algae and the answer had the amount of Erythromycin required per litre. Can't remember it off-hand sorry.
  22. It's Phalloceros actually If anyone knows of a South Island source for these fish I would appreciate it.

    Introduction

You weren't droning - we did ask! The bigger the tank the easier it is to maintain too. How lucky to have the ideal room like that for it. Good luck with it as it matures and you add more fish.
  24. No advice but good luck Dave, they are a very pretty fish but not very hardy in my experience.
  25. Oh of course! Duh!! I was thinking breeding but couldn't think what the other B was for.
