    Hello to all.

Welcome to the fishroom Mark. Did you know there is a fish club in Dunedin? Some of our Marlborough members are heading there this weekend for their tank and pond crawl. Always good fun and a great way to see new fish and get landscaping ideas (not to mention a few fish and plants he he). I believe some Christchurch and Timaru members will also be visiting. If you (and the family) want to join in you would be most welcome. Give the Pet Warehouse a ring as I am sure one of the staff there can give you details as owner Denise is current club president and their meetings are held there. At the moment I believe the plan is to start on Saturday, 9am at 4 Nairn St. Mosgiel but that may have changed.
  2. Husband Grant says guppies must be socks in disguise! GE at its finest  If he is right, I suggest you look in the drier or washing machine.
  3. A dried guppy is also very small and not always spotted, or identified, immediately. Have you checked IN the filter? Also, if he died soon after you saw him last, the other fish would easily dispose of the whole boy by tea time but I like Andrew's 'virtual tank' theory better. I have long suspected such a thing existed.
  4. Hi Fiona, good luck with the project. I am sorry I can't help as I am nowhere near Auckland (and don't have a large aquarium teeming with fish). Try looking at our main page under "Clubs" and contact some club members in the Auckland area. Kim Dunnett at Pupuke Aquarium may be able to help you.

    Help

I do not take good care of my plants  . I am one of those 'poke and hope' aquarists who figure it is survival of the fittest. Probably explains my algae problems too
  6. They say it's the thought that counts Ira
  7. Welcome to the fishroom lilspartan It is also possible your guppy is upset by the water conditions. Can you tell us a few tank readings (like pH, temperature, nitrates, ammonia etc). How long has the tank been set up? Guppies like company so a few mates might calm him down. With guppies, if you want to mix the sexes, make sure you have at least 3 females for every male. I found a dried up African cichlid on the floor today. Only a small gap in the lid but he found it!

    Help

Crypts do not like being moved, I understand, and they will die off and hopefully send out new leaves again. Mine were so big they had taken over the tank. The tank was stripped and replanted but the crypts never grew again!
  9. Thanks all. I was very pleased with them myself! Now, how about you all submitting an article or two? It is a good feeling to see your name in print.
  10. If she was the only one with the curvature it would more likely be through damage rather than genes. I still would not have bred from her but if she and the fry are only for food then it won't matter.
  11. There is certainly a list of fish that are not allowed to be imported. It is put out by MAF (or whatever they call themselves these days)
  12. I believe they may be egg layers.
  13. By the Glenfield club I assume you are referring to the North Shore? As a non-Aucklander I have no idea where the different suburbs are. I don't believe any of the North Shore club are signed up here. Perhaps you can persuade them to do so at their next meeting
  14. Danios are a schooling fish and the biggest is usually the leader who bullies the others. If you have a group of them it doesn't matter because, even if he is bullying 24/7 he has lots to bully so all of them get a rest at some point. I wonder if your sick danio has had more than his fair share of bullying and in an attempt to get away may have damaged his underside on a rock or other sharp object. The colouring around the gills indicates a problem. I would separate the sick danio so you can keep a close eye on it and check for secondary infections starting. It will also give him recovery time. Perhaps you might consider getting a few more danios to keep the bully occupied. 6 or more is best for schooling fishes.
  15. I would go with the Java too. Also, you can line your light reflector with aluminium foil to get good reflection.

    Cloudy Water

The Napier group - serious??? I think you have the wrong group  Try it and see for yourself.
  17. Never heard that name bikiegirl. I know guppies are called millions fish but would not have thought leopardfish prolific enough to earn a similar name. You never know though!
  18. I'm sorry you did not get a reply. Perhaps they are away at the moment. Hopefully you get some help from Bryce. Otherwise, ring Kim Dunnett at Pupuke Aquarium as she is currently the president of the club.

    Guppies!

It would be faster to ask who hasn't got into breeding guppies at some point! A couple of members here were talking about setting up a guppy club but I am not too sure whether they have done anything about it yet. There are a few interested in line breeding.

Contact Mike for details 09 537 1791 Auckland Fishkeepers meet in the Green Bay Community Centre, 2nd Tuesday of the month, at 7.30pm. Their president is Maurice Dormer and secretary Piet Bakker.
  21. Java will do OK. I also managed to keep water sprite because it grew faster than the goldfish could eat but they tend to eat the root end first so the top half dies off. I planted some and left others floating. Have you any safe streams nearby? Go down with a bucket and get oxygen weed.
  22. I always found my WCMMs spawned in cooler water and were more colourful but another member found the opposite! Perhaps it depends on what temperature they were raised in. They come from cold waters so it makes sense they would prefer a lower temp.
  23. People prefer males as they are more colourful. If you have too many males and not enough females they hassle the females continually until the poor girls die from exhaustion. If you wanted them for their colour you could get all males.

    move

I agree with Ira. Those canisters really stink if they go off! Have you continued to keep the old filters running on the temporary tanks? This will save you having to cycle the tank again.
  25. It's more descriptive than 'gonopodium'
