  1. "Cold" is relative. 16 - 20C is their preference and they breed when the temp rises. In Nelson you would have no trouble with them outside. One of our members has hers outside in a pond but tries to bring them in during winter.
  2. I am curious. If you have a fish that is grossly swollen, surely its scales would stick out anyway, not necessarily because it had dropsy? The curve of the body would make them stand out wouldn't it?

    clubs members?

Get the flyers done (I am happy to design and print colour ones if you need help) advertising a meeting with the time and place on it. Put them up in malls, supermarkets, vets, library, schools - anywhere you can think of. Put an advert in the paper as well saying anyone interested in joining an aquarium club please contact (insert phone number here). That way you can tell them about the meeting when they ring. Do all that FIRST. Once you have had the first meeting THEN put out the newsletter. That is how we did it anyway and it worked Hopefully, with all those flyers and the advert there will be more than just 3 of you. If you contacted the other clubs and told them when the meeting was you could ask them to help support you by attending as well.

It would look nice up on the bit against the back car window and filled with gouramis. It would calm down the people stuck behind you in the traffic

Hi and welcome doch. What part of Auckland are you in?
  14. Marlborough had 2 van loads attend the last show Napier held. Well worth the trip people! Thanks to the Hawkes Bay Aquarium Society for organising another, I know a lot of work is involved.
  15. Perhaps she is just trying to look like your avatar? Sorry I don't know anything about synos and have not had one so can't help with your query.
  16. I would use lots of plants, few fish, no filter. Can't comment on substrates as I have only ever used gravel. If you want filtration there are some very compact internal units available out there. Most have adjustable flow too, or perhaps you could use a sponge filter.

    hydroton

Just did a little research... Hydroton, a.k.a. hydrocorn, are kiln-fired clay pebbles imported from Holland. Their neutral pH and excellent capillary action qualities make them a great hydroponic medium. Preferred by horticulturalists for hydroculture, this product offers many advantages when compared to soil. The medium is clean, odor-free, reusable, and light so as not to crush plants. It offers excellent aeration. Hydrocorn prevents rotting, excess acidity, and soil pests.

Not heard of it either. What is it exactly?
  19. Fins crossed for success Ira.
  20. Hi Dave and welcome. It doesn't take much to get the hobby going again and the tanks multiplying does it? Perhaps you would like to join us in chat sometime. A group of us are there most evenings from around 9pm.
  21. A nice lot of plants you have there. May I suggest you move the heater further down so it is hidden behind the plants?
  22. Hard to tell but according to my book the male is slimmer and the anal and caudal fins are edged with soft yellow.
  23. My thoughts too Ira  I feel your pain dark! Would have liked to see the pics. Don't suppose you want to pull it all out and start again hmm?
