  1. Please write an offical letter to the editor abut this Midas and I will print it in the next issue. Or, may I just copy and paste this into it? I print articles received in good faith. If I know something is wrong I query the writer but in this case it is not my area of expertise. Perhaps someone else agrees or disagrees with you and we could get quite a discussion going within the magazine. Whatever, it is nice to get some feedback. The only times I have ever received letters to the editor was when I printed an article (written by Alan I might add) about breeding a banned fish and the sh*t hit the fan. Then someone disagreed with an article about making your own heatpads. They might be complaints but it shows some people are reading it!
  2. If you join an affiliated club it is free but you can also subscribe. Costs $21.80 (p&p inc) within NZ. This is an A5 size 40 page full colour magazine produced quarterly so you get 4 magazines for the price (Feb, May, Aug and Nov). If you wish to subscribe (joining a club is sometimes cheaper ) please PM me for the treasurer's address.

    Carbon Filters

There is nothing wrong with using carbon Lyn1 but it is expensive cos you have to change it so often and really not necessary. Most people only use it if they want to remove something quickly from their tanks (like medications)
  5. See at the top of the page is a bit called "profile". Click on that and scroll down until you get to the bit about avatars. That is what the little pics are called. Take note of the max sizes allowed.
  6. There is a fish club in Dunedin. Have you considered joining? They meet 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7pm at the Pet Warehouse, cnr Strafford and Manse Sts.

    Sand?

I use sand in my cichlid tank - just enough to cover the bottom. I got it from the local beach
  9. I work for a GP who gives me a few tablets of it when required.
  10. I can answer 2 A sump is where you use a large container (often another aquarium) as a filter. You fill it with baffles to direct the water flow, filter wool, bio media etc like you would in a canister filter and a large pump to circulate the water through it, into the main tank, and back again. It gives you a lot more water volume, huge filtering area and somewhere to put all the gadgets like heaters and stuff, keeping them out of the main tank.
  11. Just because it has been done doesn't mean you should. I don't think it is fair on the fishes.
  12. One is on its way to you too Ira Not all posties unfortunately minch. Ours is illiterate.

  20. Cycling is for new tanks only. It refers to the gradual build-up of bacteria in the filters that convert fish waste to good stuff.

    fish tank stand

If you want a metal stand, try a local engineering firm.
  22. We do not have clubs for people interested in a specific species - except for the killifish club which is nationwide and postal only. There are 3 FNZAS affiliated clubs in Auckland and one reef one just getting off the ground.
