Yes, I think the "dying overnight" is a clue too. Not necessarily a nocturnal predator either. I get all by driftwood from the beach, it would never occur to me to BUY it :lol: I assume the substrate was all thoroughly washed when you set the tank up again after removing the UGF?

No your substrate should not smell bad when you siphon it. May indicate you have been over feeding and stuff is rotting which would explain the cloudy water too.

Give them whatever you want them to eat. When they are hungry enough they will eat anything

Plecs will do this all the time. It is normal

We had a similar problem. Bought one guppy and wiped out the rest of the tank. The new guppy had a bacteria that the others had no immunity to and it killed them all

The shorter, chunkier types of goldfish are notorious for swim bladder problems as their intestines get all squashed up in their shortened bodies so they find it harder to digest foods.

I like to use the ceramic noodles because they are vastly more efficient then any cheap alternative. As for rocks, it depends on the type. Some do nothing at all, while others will raise the pH.

I think if you pinch the tops out too they will branch out more and become more bushy.
