  1. We didn't think you were nuts at all spink! Sorry we didn't understand what you were trying to tell us.
  2. I know how bad it looks but all the fish we saw looked fine to us. No sign of any sick or dead ones anywhere. All were alert with erect fins. They possibly were selling them fast as it was hard to move through the crowds of people and finding enough space to be able to take a photo.
  3. Did you see my post about emailing the finished article to me? (it was being added to and altered as more information came in). Never got an email from you. Is what is there now what you want to finish with? If so, I am happy to use it. Any pics to go with it? 8)
  4. Is it likely that the PH is high due to run-off from wall? Possibly. It may drop once the plants are added. Is the PH level at 7.8 too high for goldfish and plants? The fish won't mind, if they are adjusted to the pH slowly. The plants will get used to it I think and may, as said, help reduce the pH.
  5. This plant is easy and doesn't really care where you cut it You can cut it in sections and replant the cut-offs. They will grow new shoots.
  6. I have a rough idea of the type you mean but no experience with them. Am still unsure which bit the fish are getting attached to. Do you mean they are getting sucked against the inlet pipe?
  7. Thanks to Stella and Billany for answering my plea so quickly. What you have done is great Stella, to the point.
  8. I too am wondering what sort of filter you have.
  9. Needed ASAP but any that are not used for the May edition can be used in the August one. Sometimes I will have 2 articles on a similar subject so they need to be separated. Each magazine I try to have at least 1 of each of the following subjects; coldwater tropical marine food plant disease Thankyou Stella. I shouldn't have named anyone specifically I guess, I got carried away  firefish all would be appreciated.
  10. I am having a tougher time than usual thinking of articles for the next magazine. Anyone willing to send me something? I have 26 pages left to fill and am having a blank attack There are lots of you on here breeding fish, setting up tanks, growing plants, building DIY stuff, backgrounds etc. How about writing an article about it for me? Anyone whose article gets used gets a free copy of the magazine (assuming they do not already do so) and the excitement of seeing their name is an internationally read magazine! Pics are good too. Nobody is expecting it to be perfect - that is what the editor is for - to correct stuff. The Aquarium World is FOR hobbyists, BY hobbyists so please have a think. Even if it is something short I can use as a filler, anything would be appreciated. So far I have an interesting reply to fishy_t's article in the last magazine re the results of fish keeping on wild fish populations, an article on dropsy (thanks billaney), a perch egg exporting article (thanks Dave) and a bit from NIWA on the impact of ocean acidification. Blue, can you do something on worms? I remember you commenting you thought one of the pics in the last magazine was not of planaria, as stated. How about something on the worms you think they actually were (was it flat worms?) Stella, have you time for something on native fish? I know you are busy but I'm asking anyway 8) . It's your own fault for getting others more interested in native fish. Come on all of you - HELP PLEASE
  11. If you had asked here first I could have told you the $4 Shops had them

    Kuhli loaches

But they don't live in an aquarium in the wild either
  13. First of all we need to know what size your tank is and how many litres. How long has the tank been going with the 10 barbs in it? You say you want bigger fish but the 3 you mention are about the same size as the barbs.
  14. and I am president of Marlborough and VP of Tasman

    Hi from Spink!

Welcome Spink, I am sure you will enjoy it here
  16. Not worthless at all. I found it interesting although pics would help. Here's a fish market in Hong Kong... http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v144/ ... ?start=all
  17. I don't feed moths - I expect them to find their own food
  18. If you are driving in a sports car at 50kph with the roof down - do not break wind. It is OK at higher speeds but at 50 it seems to get stuck in the vacinity
  19. Not sure how you can avoid getting blanketweed apart from making sure you do not get plants from a place that is already infected. It is very hard to eradicate!
  20. 1. Is there an active aquatic club in Western Bay of Plenty - I've heard it is no longer active - anyone know?? Yes there is. Answered in the previous post. 2. The pond is full and being filtered, but is bare of plants and fish. What should I do first? I've been told to get a few plants and a few fish and build up slowly. A pond that size you can add both plants and fish together. The fish will be happier to have places to hide in the plants though so might pay to add them first. 3. Do I need particular plants other than my planned lilies, for pond health? I think I have plenty of surface area of water for fish oxygen supply. I have seen frequent comment about 'oxygen' weed. Do I need this? You do not "need" any particular plants but those described as "good oxygenators" are useful. Read the labels on the plants on the shop as they will have this written on them. Oxygen weed is a good oxygenator (hence the name) and can be gathered from local waterways. be careful not to gather any with weeds attached. 4. What is a WCMM? Lots of mention of this fish, but I don't know what it is. As stated - white cloud mountain minnows, Tanichthys albonubes. Not what I would recommend in a pond as thay are hard to see. 5. If I get a few 'goldfish' from a friend, and he has 'blanket' weed, will I inevitably get this weed too? Is there any way to avoid getting it? Yes 6. Should I get equipment to clean detritis off the bottom of the pond regularly? It would be handy. I haven't got any for my pond yet (about 6,500L) 7. Once the pond is running and I have fish and plants in it, can I just top up for evaporation loss from the tap, or do I need to treat the added water somehow before I add it? I'm presuming the water here is treated with various chemicals. This varies depending on your water source. I don't add anything to mine as we don't have chlorine etc added to our water. In a pond that size I don't think topping up with water that hasn't been dechlorinated will be a problem. Make sure your lilies are not splashed by the water feature as they do not like this. Got some pics of your pond? 8)
  21. I suspect dead spots of bacteria (possibly in the sand). Until you do something about that, just doing water changes won't be enough. If it smells foul, imagine what it must be like to have to live in it!
