  1. Just got back from Pakuranga Night Market. Interesting place, more ethnic homemade/carpark-made food stalls than I think anyone could eat from in one night. Lots of bling and stuff for kids and teenagers to spend money on, fruit and veges at decent prices, a few clothing stalls, some second hand stuff and other random stuff like soap, doggie clothing, and lavendar products mixed in. Little or no homemade craft on offer. Womens and men's jackets were $30 each or 2 for $50, modern fashion stuff and lots to choose from. Great place for pickpockets and 5 finger discount, so hang on to your bag and keep your kids on a leash haha! It was very busy but at 7pm everyone was still well behaved and going about their business. Not as big as I expected but lots to see anyway. I will go back with some money and an empty stomach next time.
  2. I have wendtii and affinis and it isn't those, not balansae either. Could be walkerii though the leaves aren't as long as my existing one, and that doesn't have the fluted edges either. Isn't pale enough to be cordata if they all are pale like Joe's. For now is Cryptus Mysterious.
  3. So those of you with house insurance, do you actually get back enough to do what you need to do get the house or broken part in working order again? I take it those who rent and don't have contents insurance are stuffed and just have to cover their own losses or is there some place you can apply for some cash?
  4. Undulata is the one at the front left with the paler leaves next to anubias nana. The one I am wondering about is the 1 in back left and the same one next to it on the back pane of glass with the long brown stems and wavy green leaves. They do have some brown veins too.
  5. can anyone tell me what the crypt is in the back left corner of the tank?

  9. I think you have an amphibious caterpillar. Have a look at the top edge of the glass out of the water, they often hide behind the wires before they go over the back.

  14. I used to keep stick insects as a kid in England and as far as I know I had a male and female and they used to breed. The male was smaller and he used to stick the end of his sticky end into or onto the end of her sticky end and then round eggs with a dot on top would follow later on the floor of the jar. If that wasn't stickies getting sticky I don't know what they were up to. They survived on privet I used to pick from the council walkway. Once I took a bunch of juveniles in to science class for I don't know what purpose, they disappeared and some days later we found 'some stick insects' in a jar with the other dead critters and pigs eyes The brown one in Mark's picture looks like a female, they are always fatter around the belly. When I lived on Waiheke Island there was a lot of bush on the section and we frequently found stick insects in the bushes and on the car, which was parked under some trees. Once we drove the car to the ferry, got out and found 2 of them on the car. Went to Auckland, came back and they were still there so we drove them home again. What identifies the mantis in the latest picture as the type from SA - the big belly? We have usually had both those type and the skinny green type, I thought the smaller one was a male and the fat belly a female
  15. you could water them off gently with a hose if you don't want to do as Ira suggests and then get rid of the web. THat may encourage them to sheetweb someone else's back steps. I would rather Ira's idea though.
