  1. I don't remember the name of the sponge filter at the beginning of the thread, but you can find it at HFF for about $8. Now there is an Eheim Pickup 2006 in there.
  2. I think that's just what NZers call a park. I don't think it's a reserve like a marine reserve where you cannot fish??? :dunno:
  3. Meola Creek behind the zoo, drag your net in the weeds and you will get some shrimp. Or I did anyway. Not North Shore though unless you compare to Invercargill though :smln:
  4. My killies were tame and always waiting for dinner. My new sparkling gouramis now rise to the top of the tank expectantly when I go near the tank too and follow things around that are outside the glass
  5. The only way I can tell sharp sand from smooth is comparing something like paving sand - gritty and unpleasant feeling - to silica sand or beach sand that feels softish. It's still sand after all and not velvet so still not the sort of thing you want to get trapped in your undies either way. If there is any differentiation between those 2 extremes I can't find it. Also I personally wouldn't use fine gravel when I could get fine sand as the instructions that come with cories say - "must have sand or smooth round stones". I have seen pictures of corys with damaged barbels and it ain't pretty so I think it isn't worth the risk. In short I would choose iron sand over black satin.
  6. I got the stones from Central Landscape Supplies in Captain Springs Rd Onehunga but I think all the Central Landscape outlets have the same products.
  7. Back satin midnight from Petstuff101 is extremely fine gravel, it is not sand. I also have the fine gravel but not the sand and it's almost black depending on the lights shining at the time. If you are buying it for looks then great, if you are buying it for fish with barbels then I suggest not so great but each to his own. The only thing I would now get to make my planted tank base blacker is the Iron Sand concentrate from Swanson Industrial Sands, or a beach if I ever got that far, but for a handful or so that I want, it's not a priority.
  8. I did a little research on page 2 of this thread: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=52336&start=15 to be honest I though Henward had some already. From what I read I thought that it wouldn't do anything unhelpful other than if it got in the impellor. You needed double the amount of phosphate removing products for freshwater than salt if that helps you decide.
  9. So let me get this straight - I have been watching the saltwater threads for a while and this looks like you have no filter/sump/skimmer ?? Do you get fresh seawater for the water change? And are you going to put some critters in?
  10. I bought a fish that wasn't what it was labelled as but when I realised I said to myself that was good, I got it cheaper than the one that was labelled correctly. Also I liked it anyway. If I didn't I would have taken it back and I'm pretty sure they would have given a refund or swap. The supply chain doesn't start with the shop unless for some unlikely reason they are also the breeder. The problem starts when the wholesaler/importer doesn't provide the correct latin name with the product they are selling. It can then be up to the store to label them under as many different common and not so common names as they please. Shouldda-wouldda-couldda etc etc etc :yaw2: :spop:
  11. need my last 3 killies to hurry up and leave home and then it's GO :bounce:
  12. Your reciprocal hypnosis worked! Here's your new car, in keeping with your eco-friendly viewpoint
  13. Hey Foxglove, when my garage tank is empty again, I want to try moving my pygmies in there and seeing if I can get them to breed. In the set up you mention above did you ever see eggs and look after them, or just leave the fish to do their business?
  14. my hypnosis worked! thanks Deepsound :bounce:

    Hey Sam!

  16. I think the point is that while we are possibly all guilty of doing it, and that is half the fun of fishkeeping, you shouldn't really impulse-buy fish. Go to the shop, see what they have, then go home and do some research. Then if it's the fish you think it is, go back and buy it.
  17. HFF have both mosquito (brigittae - they are tiny and very active)and dwarf (maculata - bigger but won't grow quite as big as brigittae) and they ship. Fish are approx $5 each and they do ship. That's if I don't go and buy them first :bounce:
