  1. My snail colony is off to a fine start after some donations and continual harvesting from my other tanks but I have this question - why do their shells start to turn white? Is it from being in cold water after tropical?? I thought that the little flat round snails were ramshorns, turns out they are pond snails. I got some round ramshorns that really are 'ramshorns' from a cold water tank, put them in with my other snails and they all died mysteriously over a few days, I don't know why. Now that some of the other snails shells are going white I wonder if I'm doing something wrong. Maybe they need their vegetables? It's a plastic 20 ish litre container with a very cut down trickle of air stone bubble, some occasional food, no heater, no specific light apart from what comes in the window and some trimmings of aquarium plants from time to time. They all appear to be alive and possibly even growing otherwise.
  2. The female pygmy cory that I put to sleep did something similar, she swam along with her bottom end floating up in the air like a balloon attached. Sometimes would hide under a leaf to rest her floating bottom up against. In the end she got a fungus and started acting sick but I think it all started with an infection of a fin. I was taking some advice and reading around, and read that some swim bladder issues can start with a gut infection or worm etc so I think if it's not immediately detectable you might never know what it was. I don't think it's fertilisers unless they have started off a reaction in the fish, but I still think doubtful for most fish.
  3. it sounds like it looks like my black sand then hahaha :slfg:

  8. soon be time to start thinking about retirement Joe...
  9. certainly will, though now I will have to wait till I see a group of them swimming about, or if I suck 10 up in the water change at the same time.
  10. I have the Gh and Kh test kit and the sand water was not different, or not by much. I tested buckets of sand water and water and tank water black sand looks good Dan - is it blacker than mine was under the lights? I think there is a gold tinge to yours, it isn't black-black like the background
  11. thanks for the photos - yes I got those from Aquaworld, last 2
  12. I hope your furry heffalump comes home soon, very worrying when they go missing. Have you checked with the neighbours to see if he has gotten stuck in a garage or such like?
  13. It sat there for about half an hour, then my husband stomped past and it darted off.
  14. When I saw this in the water change earlier I actually thought it was a dragonfly nymph. The only thing that gave it away was the angry swimming manner of a little fish. Here is a photo just taken of one of the fry. It appears to be sitting on the side of the glass in a most non-fishy manner. The finger is my little finger so you can see what a miniscule sliver it is.
  15. Also if you polish off drops of water that slip down the outside while they are still wet it doesn't make a mark. The only place I get the white spots are on the lid where I pay less attention to the splashes.
