Bummer. Just a tip on what I do. I have ripped pieces off old sponge filters & stick them in the gaps. I have a couple of species of fish that like to jump & can fit through small gaps. Frenchy

Sure, Comes from the Book called... "The new illustrated guide to fish diseases" in ornamental tropical and pond fish by: Gerald Bassleer Frenchy

Oh well, all I can say is told ya so. They got imported under a dodgy name & yes they were glo fish. Those that sold them deserve what they get. Those that bought them, should of known better. {wonders if Brad will see this post  } Frenchy

Chloro-B 500 Broad spectrum Antibiotic plus vitamins. The main ingredient is Chloramphenicol. Contains 5 other ingredients. In Gerald Bassleer' book he states this chemical may be harmful to humans. {no s#@t} It has now been replaced by Florfenicol. Frenchy

I don't follow the instructions on the bottle. Only because I follow the instructions of a doctor who specialises in fish care. What I meant earlier was, 250mg/100lt each day for 3 days. The repeat for 3 weeks. Therefore for example mon, tues, wed for 3 weeks in a row. The problem is the life cycle can vary so much in a fish tank, temp etc. This way you make sure you kill the fluke off properly. Frenchy

Cheers. I still have the bottle at home. The active ingredient was used in hosing down holding tanks in Asia. But they linked all the cancer break outs to the drug. I use it in a pill form, has a protective coating. Therefore I don't touch the drug itself. I can only buy the pills through a vet. Not easy to get at all. Frenchy

I did stick to oxy in the end. It was just what I read on a discus froum in Aussie. The best drug I used was Chlor-B. It is deadly to humans but. When fish first broke out I split the tank into really sick into separate tank. Used oxy. The others in main tank got Chlor-B. Those that got Chlor-B cleared up quickly. Then again, they weren't as advanced I guess. But I only had a limited amount, therefore hit the better ones with the better drug, just in case others were to far gone. I used a little metro in the food, just incase. Just the disease seems to break the fish, therefore they got hit by a couple of other diseases. I lost 3 all up. The others now are more active, colour coming back. I will post active ingredients in Chlor-B, but will also post up safer alternative. Meds are at home, I am out tonight. Frenchy

My Discus Has Fin Rot--- What should i do????
herefishiefishie replied to cichlid7's topic in Freshwater
Anti bacterial is the most common cause of fin rot. But do check for signs of parasites, ie; flashing, scraping, heavy breathing etc. As said above parasites can cause fin rot. Frenchy -
Prazi is harmless to to the filter media bacteria, that is why I like using it over some other parasite remedies. Furan I don't know. Frenchy

Sorry didn't see this earlier. Crowding tanks isn't a concern if all eating & water is fine. 28.3 is fine too. Many discus keepers keep at this or higher. As you first stated a dose of prazi, one dose each for 3 days, continue for 3 weeks. Treat with metro, cheaper if you mix with food & feed. Good luck. Frenchy

As well with above; Fish will hang down at the bottom of the tank breathing heavy to if high levels of ammonia are present. For me the way a fish swims or looks gives it away, for a fish not being well. The eyes are usually the first sign, a fish sitting to the side with a haze look, not alert, grabs my attention. Another thing that is common with cichlids is breaks in the lateral line. Frenchy

Is the blue one still swimming the group? What part of the pecking order is it on? Could be just from stress, new tank, being picked on etc. How long have they been in the new tank for? Frenchy

They usually know the model if it is an all in one tank. For normal glass tanks, then measurements of the tank is easy done with a ruler, tape measure. Thats all you need to have in title. ie;Glass Fish Tank 60x30x30cm Frenchy

If I remember rightly here. In the trading post, you can't just post big tank. You have to post the dimensions, litres or brand model. Now that should be a guide line for tank sales. Frenchy
-
When I first got a 2 ft tank I thought that was a nice size. Wouldn't say huge. Looking at the 2 footers now, they only ever have fry or are used as hospital tanks. To this person, the tank is probably big. Maybe trade me should use guide lines for tank sizes. For a start, this person is attracting the wrong people to the add. Those who are after cute little set ups won't look at the add, those that are into big tanks will see the add & probably throw abuse or taunts. Frenchy

Welcome aboard. Have fun & watch out for MTS, it is very contagious. Frenchy
-
Who knows, It is all trial & error. Having said that, it would probably be fine at the start as juvies. But, your tank would be to small down the track once fish were bigger, paired off etc. Frenchy

White spot could of just been living in the gills during the time. Break out when fish are stressed, run down etc. Something as simple as a new plant could of carried the disease too. I find this article very good on the white spot topic. By the University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/BODY_FA006 Frenchy

I have seen furan mentioned, same for a lot of bacterial meds, metro, parasite remedies etc. I haven't seen furan around. I don't think we have it here. I treated with an oxy drug, pretty good anti bacterial, 4th day of treatment, with a few water changes. I stopped using prazi. Just treated for first 3 days. treat for 3 more days next week. One discus broke out with whitespot oon day 2. :-? May switch tomorrow to metro, recommended by discus guys here. The only reason I will switch to that is guys have sworn by it & had no deaths. Some of mine are already looking better & started eating. If story still the same will stick with oxy. No more deaths today. Frenchy

I have been hit by this. Not pretty at all. Hit quick & hard. Lost 2 discus, one at day1, one at day3. Both were ones that were smaller, thinner ones I was feeding up. All came down when I introduced a new discus. First came down about 3 days later. Funny, the new discus is fine still & looks great. {lesson there, quarantine all new fish} Most others looking pretty bad, gone dark, hiding, excess mucus, breathing heavy, fins clamped etc. Treating with bacterial medicine of choice & prazi as flukes have hit, secondary infection. Added salt, temp at 30, slowly dropping ph with naturally, using indian almond leaves. Lights off. Will let people know how I go. Hard disease to deal with as fish look so bad. Information in Books & net so conflicting too. Bizarre disease, all other tropicals look fine. All I can say is, glad I don't have a discus room. Sounds like all would of got it. Frenchy

Common knowledge is that the egg spots are not a reliable way to tell the sex of peacocks. Females have a use for egg spots too. The best way to go is to vent sex your fish. If they are 8cm then this will be a reliable way to tell. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/gender.php http://www.fishhead.com/articles/ventsex.htm Oh, usually when people ask to set up a colony, especially when buying young africans. I usually tip people to buy 6 or more. The tip here is to buy the best looking of the bigger ones, maybe 2. Then buy 4 of the smaller ones. Especially in peacocks, females grow slower than males.
