Cant recall sorry Twinkles as it was a few years ago now. Remember it being quite pricey at the time but seems to be good value. Read somewhere that it was quite good for plants and must say the plants in my tank grow very well and need pruning almost weekly so if that is the reason for the good growth then I would really recommend it

Thanks mate. Substrate is a mix of black fluorite and some dark grey fine gravel. Got both from HFF. Actually looks a lot darker in real life than it does in the pics.

Heres one of mine with the black background Apologies for the low quality image
  4. TAB..... I've only ever put $150 in to my account over about 8 or 9 years and withdrawn thousands. Just know when to stop and stay away from the AirNZ Cup at the moment as its a bit random. Take short odds on things like NRL and multi them up to get a good return.

    2nd filter ideas

Thanks guys but cant fit the HOB as the tank as a hood so no real way to set it up without modification / butchering the hood. I do like the idea of the external filter suggested (CF1200) but again hood modification required (albeit minor) and the CF1200 is probably a bit overkills for my needs right now and in the medium term at least. Might pop down my local store and see what internal options are avail.

    2nd filter ideas

Hi team Keen for your input on the following: I have a 120ltr tank similar to the AquaOne with in-hood filteration. This filter seems to be coping ok but stil have my doubts over it so would like to add some additional filteration and well thats gotta be a good thing. Not really sure what my options are but have been thinking the following far... Either: - internal filter - those cannister types that sit in the corner. Seems to be a heap of them on trademe but not sure what is good and what's not. I have the space in the tank for it and don't think I would mind too much the visual impact as long as its not too big. Maybe 200mm by 100mm by 100mm would be ok. - external cannister - I understand that I should be looking for a flow rate approx 4-5 times tank capacity so 600-700 would be ideal. Although given I have the existing hood filter I may not need quite this much. One disadvantage I see is that I'd need to drill some wholes in the hood of the tank to get the pipes in to the tank. any other ideas? Not keen to spend a whole lot of options so a simple, effective and cheap option could be the winner. Thanks JK
  8. Thanks Whetu - Yeah i am not all that bothered by it but I do think the in the hood filter that came with the tank is a bit lacking really. Possibly a second filter to supplement it would be a good idea anyway. Not sure what to use though. Maybe a small internal filter and put it the opposite corner to the existing filter pickup. Seems heaps of cheap options on trademe but wonder if any of them are actually any good. In the meantime, I will check the seals around the filterwool to ensure that water cant pass around it without being subject to the filtering process.
  9. Ta carryl The tank is pretty clean and clear really. Just at times looks like can see a wee bit of dust or some type of small particles in the water.
  10. What is the cause / fix for this one whetu (or others) At times i think I can see particles like dust etc in the 1/5 of my tank.

    Low pH

Yep I know. Had done a few searches on this site (with more meaningful results than 'raising kh') and also elsewhere. Was just keen to hear if anyone had any recommended articles on the subject.

    Low pH

How do I go about that Phoenix. Have never really bothered with water hardness / softness before. Are they any recommended articles that I should read on this subject?

    Low pH

Yep tap water about 7.0 - 7.2. Tested it as I was doubting my test kit for a wee while. Will stand some tap water overnight and test it tomorrow

Cheers for the responses so far. Ammonia is coming up at very close to nil, maybe 0.1 at most. Did remove a fair few poos from the tank this weekend though. Low pH

Hi all Lately I have been noticing that my tank keeps reverting to pH of about 6.0, possibly even slightly lower. Fish don't seem to mind too much but just wondering if it's something I should be worried about and if there is anything I should be doing. I am pretty sure that it is due to the large piece of wood that I have in the tank. I do 20% water changes weekly but it doesnt seem to make much of a difference. I also have some pH up but dont want to add stuff to the tank thats not essential if ya get what I mean. Thoughts??
  18. thanks phoenix but ive actually got pretty sick of that val so have chopped out almost all of it. Have never had a plant grow so quickly as that stuff. Will post a more recent pic soon but does look a bit barren. Going to up the plants somewhere this weekend. Yes have seen threadfin rainbows before but not for a while. Could be a good idea!
  19. Well...... I seem to go through phases with my addiction to this hobby. Cant decide to spend my time on rocks catching fishing or looking after the pet ones I have at home :-? Anyway, been putting some effort back in to the tank again and gave it a bit of tidy up on the weekend (will post pics over the next day or so) and I am looking to add some new fish but not sure what. Current stock is a pair of blue rams, 2 x GBA, 10 neons, 2 dwarf chain loachs and 6 glowlight danios. In the past have had rainbows and giant danios as I quite like having a few fast swimmers in the tank. Also have had corys and have none at the moment so thought of getting 4-6 of those. But otherwise open to ideas of what may go well with these fish? Cheers JK
  20. WOW looks awesome David. Keep up the good work mate. Keep an eye on that barrie though. With a tank and fish of that size you'll have to make sure he's not trying to wet a line in there!
  21. Yeah, just looks like standard old blue rams to me? They do appear quite yellow tho, I think mine are much cleaner and brighter than those pictured
  22. Nice one. Great looking fish eh! I introduced a female to my male about 3 weeks ago and they took a real interest in each other straight away. Have had eggs laid every couple of days since but since they are in a community tank they seem to dissappear just as quickly. Would love to just set up a tank for them breeding like you ahve. Good luck with it!
  23. hey guys Rather than starting a new topic i thought id try this one for some advice. Got a new female blue ram on the weekend and my male seems to have paired up with her pretty well. Started following her around like a bad smell straight away. Anyway, shes looking pretty dam full in the tummy now and they are sticking to 1 part of the tank. He is chasing everyone else away from this part. I've put a flat rock in that area as I have heard they like to lay eggs on stuff like that Given it is a community tank with a fair few other fish in it, I dont think any that any eggs that get laid will survive but should there be anything else I should be doing? Or just sit back and enjoy the tank life?
