  1. We've had a stray Tom hanging around for the last few months, we weren't too worried about it at first, we'd spot him getting into the compost or I'd see him around the farm. We began to get annoyed when he started ripping the rubbish bags open and peeing on the back door step however, and we said "we should get a trap from the SPCA and catch him" but you know how it is, we never got around to it. Then about a week and a half ago we were awoken by screeches and howls coming from the kittens at about 2am, it took quite a while to encourage the boy from his hiding place but we couldn't find the girl. She eventually showed up late the next morning with bite marks on her back, and we decided to just watch her and take her to the vet if the bite got infected, which turned out to be the completely wrong thing to do..... approximately 3 days later she was showing signs of infection so Siran took her in and to our horror the vet rushed her into surgery, By all accounts the damage was the worst our vet had ever seen from a cat bite. So in our ignorance at wanting to save 60 odd bucks by taking her in early we now have a very sick cat on our hands and a hefty $350 vet bill. So our advice?, don't wait if any of your cats or even you or your children get a cat bite, get them in straight away before it can cause any major damage
  2. I used to live in Taurikura a few years ago and loved it, I'm always keeping my eyes peeled for another farm job out that way but the opportunities are fairly limited.
  3. I recommend Mount Bruce wildlife reserve in Tararua, I used to go there all the time as a kid and loved it, I presume (and hope) it's still as good. The bridge to nowhere in the Wanganui national park is a great drive Up here there's the Whangarei heads which I've always felt is my place, the stone store in Kerikeri, and the sand dunes in Opononi.
  4. Frogs are becoming rare around the world, using them as fish food would just be a crying shame imho. http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/ ... 2009-04-28
  5. We do, high filtration(AR850 filter + Eheim 2215) and heavily planted. The fishes colours are so bright too, GAE almost glows.
  6. Weekend off, and raining so checked out sky on demand and saw Invictus, I was very inspired by the story it's self, I've always respected Mendela and all he stands for.... But.... now I'm not a huge sports fan, and I have a very limited understanding of our national sport, I haven't followed the All blacks for a number of years but in 95 I watched every game we played in the world cup, and I just feel the All blacks were badly portrayed in the movie, the actors were a motley looking bunch and the Haka was terrible. They also made us look like a one man team.....sure Jonah was incredible, but so was Jeff Wilson, Zinzan, Josh Kronfeild and all the rest. There was also no mention of the food poisoning at all. I understand that this isn't a movie about the All blacks, it's how a man united his country using their love of rugby, but still, it erks me a bit. Any other views?
  7. Bugger!, I'm sorry to hear this mate, chin up....
  8. First thing I heard at 5am news while milking. Hope everyone's OK, that's the main thing and as 44 said, if there's anything we can do to help just ask.
  9. I asked him what the PH was and he shrugged(he's 14 so yeah ) I checked and it was 7.8, am in the process of dropping it now. For now he'll keep treating every 3 days , I see no reason why the snail rid isn't working. Hopefully won't damage the plants too badly, the grass seems unaffected but the java fern is definitely worse for wear.
  10. Oldest boy has taken our AR120 (21 ltrs) home to his Grandmothers and set it up in his room. He saved his pocket money and bought some chain grass and a java fern from LFS, he began a fish-less cycle, all was going well until one day he noticed a few trumpet snails, he didn't think much of it, then later he realized he had a major infestation. I suggested snail-rid which he bought but after a week or so there's been no change, he doubled the dose but still seems to have had no effect. I know these little blighters are supposed to not eat plants but they've seriously mangled the java fern. He was wanting to stock the tank with a few cherry barbs, a Kuhli loach and a bristle nose. But now we're thinking a couple Zodiac loaches instead of the barbs. Questions .1.Will Zodiacs eat trumpets? .2.Is 21 ltrs big enough for zodiacs?
