  1. What do the native marine guys use?, I should Imagine it's expensive, then again I seem to remember LA talking about making one out of a beer fridge. I once had a conversation with a electronics wizz friend of mine who said he felt it'd be possible to make a chiller for a native tank out of a smaller portable air conditioner.... you a handy man sort??
  2. I've often wondered if you could set up a long shallow tank, put 4 or 5 inches of water in it with a powerful filter head at one end to simulate a fast running stream, with perhaps a deeper hole at each end......maybe a nano style with ferns and smaller native terrestrial plants along the back edge growing up out the top...............................heh, I'll stop dreaming now shall I? Yep, temp is the hardest bit, I think winters are OK but things quickly turn to custard in summer time without a chiller of some description. I think you're legally allowed to collect only certain breeds of native fish, common bullies and the like, some of the rarer ones you need a special license for,but yeah, Stella is your best bet.
  3. Good to hear you've had fun mate, seemed like you were stressing abit leading up to it. Am pretty jealous alright! Want to see lots of pics and hear some stories.
  4. Would one tube of silicone be enough to do the job? We are going away for a week next friday evening, and we wanted to have it up and working again by then. Would that be enough time? We were going to redo the top and the corners on the inside, it still looks okay in between. We have started peeling away the stuff that has let go. We just don't want to have to leave the fish in their little tanks too long either.
  5. We already have, Smidey as well, but nobody has looked in their inbox yet.
  6. oh man I'm not sure I could do that....might be a bit out of my depth, I'll see what I can do though. We've crammed everyone into the two smaller tanks(our redspot really doesn't look happy jammed into a wee AR380, but I think he'll be OK for a week or so) I've drained it and am just about to scoop the substrate out....crikey I didn't think I'd be doing this when I woke up this morning.
  7. Thanks heaps guys. The silicone on the tank is pealing away in all the corners and mouldy and raggedy looking, so we may as well re silicone the whole lot. Do you think one tube will be enough? And how do we peel the rest of the silicone off, do we use a knife? Cheers
  8. Thanks for that. What sort of silicone did you use?
  9. We've just started a water change on our 200 ltr and noticed the glass supports in the top middle have let go and the front glass has bowed out about 10mms, we've found several slivers of glass . It's safe to say I'm panicking, every vibration is putting me on edge, and now the kids think this is the perfect moment to start jumping around. We've only got two spare tanks right now, a 38ltr and 25 ltr and about 20 odd fish to transfer. Can we safely push the front plate back together and re-silicone it?, what can we do?
  10. 44 I was just passing on what we were told by Linyloo and Whetu when our clowns got Ich a year ago: BEWARE Clown Loaches are Scale-less Fish, which make them abit more sensitive to meds than other Fishys, you should really halve the dosage it says on the Bottle. I have Clown Loaches too, so if I get an attack of White Spot, I up the Temp to 28 then I dose with halve the dose they say on the Bottle, then re-dose again 3 days later, after doing a Big Water Change. The White Spot will have most certainly come from the Neons  Good Luck Lynda
  11. I'd be careful using a full strength treatment on your kuhlis (I presume they're scaleless like Clown loaches) as we killed several clowns that way when we first started out. I'd quarantine the zeb and treat him, and just slowly raise the 850 to 28-30' until the ich cycle has finished
  12. What were the illegal guppies? mosquito fish? I don't know anything about gold fish but the consensus here seems to be that despite general belief, gold fish aren't particularly good beginners fish.... Caryl's a bit of goldfish peep, she might point you in the right direction....
  13. Ohhhh, so that's why I have 3 kids..... :-?
  14. yuppers, we got wood pigeons coming down with the same problems here in Whanggers http://www.northernadvocate.co.nz/local ... e/3646434/ I just realized this article is 5 years old but I can't find an up to date ones, Happens every year anyway
  15. He's supplying our lfs, that's where we get ours from.
  16. Yuppers, and a earworm you pick up from someone else is called *ear cooties*
  17. So's you know I know absolutely diddly about Mechanics but... I know they're not particularly fast but I love those little suzuki swifts with the sports kits on them, there must be some way you could tweak em, they look like a lot of fun.
