  1. CF1200... I have one for sale. welcome to make an offer.
  2. Animates have a stringent process though... People are reviewed by the manager and 2IC with regards to the positions they require, followed by an interview, followed by review and interview with the regional manager etc.. Its a bit of overkill to go through when at the end of it they offer you peanuts
  3. All out is the only way to go Many people think nanos are easy, but they are sooo much harder than huge tanks!
  4. Im breeding guppies! that way they dont need as big a tank as cichlids, and I dont have to worry about feeding artemia.

    Power Cuts

Theres a great article on MFK about dealing with power outages (long ones) Im not sure it applies to small fish as much, but a battery powered air pump is most often the difference in the fish surviving and not surviving. As for the filter, all you have to do is remove the media and float them in the tank. keep the media alive, and the battery powered airpump keeps some oxygen exchange going - the other option is every hour remove a bucket of water and put it back in... There apparently are airpumps that run like a normal one and then switch over to battery power when the power fails.
  6. Went round 4 lfs today and couldnt find any sparkling gouramis... not to worry, Ill be needing someone to house my guppy feeder breeders Im going to go with specialised plant substate, like the JBL stuff ($40 a bag) or the flourish stuff ($90 a bag) to give me the best start Tank should be finished this week and ill be picking it up on the weekend. Will make this thread my photo journal
  7. Yep washing will save you some time. Its actually quite an easy job to do, you dont even have to remove all the old gravel if you dont want to, you can leave half of it in, and put some new stuff on top - less work removing the old stuff, less $ buying new stuff
  8. Yes tackling the stem of the problem is the best way to be rid of algae. Are you dosing liquid ferts? Liquid ferts go into the water column (most plants dont tend to like water column absorbsion) and hence you would be feeding the algae too. Id say give it a good scrub, and change to root tabs or something. Also look at changing your foods, any that make the water a bit cloudy are also feeding algae via the water column.
  9. Nice! I have an Indo tiger and a Delhezi. How did you get an ST? they are pretty few and far between...
  10. To me that definately looks like a dwarf flag cichlid (Laetacara curviceps).
  11. Thanks Romeo thats helpful I ordered the tank today, going with 25cm height rather than 20cm. It will look stunning even bare Will look at upgrading the lighting . Im a fan of pool filter sand and that reflects light really well, will try and find some fine black gravel

    what Silicone?

LFS sell the stuff thats aquarium safe. I even use it to glue rocks together.
  13. That much? despite being 2ft its only going to be 30L... much like the aquaone panorama tanks... a breeding pair of cockatoos would be nice...
  14. My big tank is all finished now, just got to enjoy it and wait for my Datnoid to grow... So new project. Ive failed miserably whenever ive had go at plants before due to many reasons, main one being that plants were never a focus and I didnt do too much to provide them with the right conditions... The plan: 60x20x20 long, shallow nano, kind of like a shell dweller tank. Going to have tinted glass all round except the front (reduces algae from window light, and looks the biz too) with black silicone. I have one of those small jebo 9 or 13w (will have to check) lights that works nicely, 6500k. Filtration will be my mini jebo hang on filter, 250lph, so 9-10x turnover. Ill use flourish and excel as ferts and may give the sera c02 tab defuser another go (still got tablets left) What substate is good for plants? Ill be going for low to medium light plants like crypts, any suggestions? and fish, what fish? common fish dont really do it for me, was thinking of dwarf puffers or a pair of apistogramma or something. Im getting all excited now :bounce:
  15. Its too much trouble considering my filtration is pretty sorted, just wanted to try out something to see if its better... ah well, onto the next project *goes to post new project thread*
  16. WIth the steel stands though, the conventional 4 legged ones, it probably would cost much more to add a rim around the bottom with some braces to evenly distrubute the weight rather than just four legs.
  17. Severums are known as the lawnmowers of the fish world for good reason. No plant is safe.
  18. Too true. and then you turn off the additional power heads first
  19. The only way that would happen is to have a friend in the states to send all the stuff too, then they can send it to NZ. If you buy from the same place youd be able to. Im looking at AC70s now, 2 AC110s might be overkill on my tank (14x turnover, whearas 2 70's would give 9x)
  20. Either way, the exchange rate is absolutely primo at the moment - if buying from US or UK. Ive been scouring ebay all week just to try and find some tank or bike bits that I might need
  21. I never even thought of that! As well as using different plugs... grr... might just optimise my current filters. Running a cf1200 alongside a clearview 800. Not terribly impressed by what the clearview can hold... not a lot...
  22. Yeah but costs as much to ship the filter as it does to buy the filter. Although it still works out cheaper... I wont pay more than $30us for shipping (as thats the actual price for something of that weight and size)
  23. Anyone know a US site that sells AC's that will ship to NZ? The yanks get AC110s for as cheap as $35USD ($50NZD) but the cheapest ive ever seen them in NZ shops is $180... Im all for supporting LFS, but thats one helluva price difference! Having trouble finding a site that ships outside the US though... cheers 8)
  24. This is true. Also with the correct balance, a well planted tank, lightly stocked tank will not need any waterchanges. ever.
