The 2 males should be able to work it out in a 80L with a large foot print. They will scrap for a few days but will mind their own business eventually.
I bought a few adults and also 2 babies (3-4cm) and put them in separate tanks. I found that growing out the babies has been really rewarding, especially now they have started getting their colour! But then again, I have their tank right next to a sink so water changes are a breeze.
If you have the extra time and spare tank, then it will be a worthy present
I've thought about doing this as well as an experiment. Have no idea what to expect. Maybe a mixed colour F1s with no veil tails? I think veil tails are recessive so could get something interesting with F2.
Oh ok. Yeah, I didn't buy it new, got it off a friend who also got it off a friend. They are sorta hard...but they look new so I can't really judge how old it is. I will look into replacing them.
Hi guys, was wondering if anyone else has had any problems with the suction cups actually working on thee filters.
I got one recently, fairly new, off a friend and the bloody thing won't stick to the glass. The suction cups look like they are in good nick so I don't know what their problem is. Its a bigger size then the old little one i had and that one stuck like there was no tomorrow but this new one just won't. Similarily my friend also got one like this recently (even bigger then my new one) and it refuses to stick. It even floated up sporadically on her and started spraying water everywhere...
Should I try and replace the cups?
Baby discus and display tank don't really go together unfortunately.
Baby discus need to be grown out in a bare-bottom tank with daily water changes till they are at least 6cm. Because they need to be fed frequently (and with high-protein food), are sensitive to parasites/disease and also release lots of hormones which stunt their growth (if they are allowed to build up), it is a big no-no to put them into a community/display tank.
I think that you should either set up a seperate tank to grow them out in or buy ones at a larger size. Regardless, you are still looking at frequent water changes on your display tank (>1-2 a week) to keep nitrate levels down.
There is a lot of good info out there. But just be aware that some sites are a bit outdated. Discus do prefer soft water with a low pH but not as low and many sites state (unless you want to breed them)...this is because a lot of the information was written referring to keeping wild-type discus as opposed to the ones bred in tanks for decades.
I had a krib male who was normal colouration at first and then half his face went black....like right down the middle where one side was black, and the other light. He should have been in that michael jackson vid. Never figured out what caused it, but i ended up losing him to anchor worms a few months later.
I got the white diamond, ring leopard and 2 super checkerboards from Vincent discus.
I got the blue turq from phoenix who got it from a wholesaler i think...
So oak leaves stain the water right? And do their effects on lowing pH and softening the water only work while the stain is in the water...or will it continue working even after the stain has faded. Same question for peat. Is it rendered useless once water goes back to clear?
Also with alder cones, do you just collect the ones that have fallen to the ground or can you pick the brown ones off the tree?
Thanks Flosty Me neither! Its so exciting! All the water changes are worth it to get little ones! Luckily their tank is right next to the laundry sink
I worry sometimes that they are toooo fat! I hope that their organs aren't getting all fatty I have to be careful not to overfeed. Wait till you start feeding Stu's food! They will look like this in no time!
Thanks Nymox Feeding cone for the adults for sure. Only greedy turq picks at the gravel for food. The other 2 don't so i'm happy that they pick at the cone instead. The little ones in the bare bottom vacuum up the food pretty quickly! I feed them up to 5 times a day when i'm home. Once in the morning before work. Then as soon as i come home, then 1-2 times later in the evening. Adults only get fed twice in the evening.
I've dealt with Vincent. He is lovely. Very helpful and quick to reply. Lately he's been VERY busy so he may take a few days to reply (hence why he is cutting back on some of his stock). He has a lot of albino varieties, but knows other breeders in auckland and can try to source something specific if you want it.
All my discus except 1 are from him. I find his discus are very round if that is what you are into. They also have very muscular bodies with thick foreheads (good conditioning).
I have a white butterfly which i bought because it had a big navy blotch on his head which i thought was cool I also have a ring leopard, and I absolutely love the colour on him/her....just amazing. Both these 2 are about 12cm excluding tail. And I have 2 super checkboard young which are growing out incredibly fast (in my opinion) and already getting wicked patterning. I will be getting 2 more high fin blue diamond's from his soonish as well.
Here are some pics if you wanna see:

These pics where pretty much right after i got them. The adults are a bit darker then they were in his tanks because i have a black background and lots of plants. The babies look so tiny compared to what they are now. They where about 3-4cm then and now they are close to 6cm i think, with very robust little bodies
Definitely....discus snobs are annoying. I mean get over yourself people. The only people who should be worried about that stuff is breeders and/pr those actually entering shows for money.
Some discus are just googly or lanky, or a bit square, or awkward looking....just like people.
If you like the fish, then what does it matter if its not show quality round?
More importantly, make sure its eating and happy. Slightly stunted discus can still live long and happy lives and they need a home too.
Also, can't open the image off the forum as i am not a member. Can you post it in a diff way?
