  1. should mention fishless cycling just using fish food. thats what I have always done, works well. calling it 'natural' makes it seem better, when that is up for debate. also maybe a 'cycling for dummies' would be good too, skip all the scientific stuff, just what you need to do. but good work!
  2. happened to me when I had cardinal tetras and a geophagus. no harm done and cardinals are meant to be very sesitive!
  3. male died today. the wound that he recieved during transport (months ago) was worse that I thought (it looked like just a few missing scales but was a lot deeper) and I guess eventually got to him. female still looks fine and Ill get a new mate for her when one becomes available. So I guess all the hiding over the last several weeks was just him not feeling well. got some floating plants anyway. thanks for your advice
  4. seen them a lot more than I have lately today, maybe they are getting used to it. still will try the Hydrocotyle verticillata could be cool to have anyway
  5. what do you think about Hydrocotyle verticillata? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pets-animals/Fish/Aquatic-plants/auction-312181091.htm
  6. 6500K is generally considered the best for plants, but thats about all I know on this issue
  7. got a good look at them last night (they were hiding under the filter) and they seemed pretty healthy, so they must be getting some food. will get some floating plants and see if it makes them more comfortable.
  8. still no love hadn't thought about that. I did increase the light a bit a few days before they started hiding, but it's still not super bright (two T8s). they are swimming around now that the lights are off so you may be onto something there. maybe some floating plants would help?
  9. some people have too much time on their hands, should be doing water changes: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=356085.0
  10. I think you can do it without a net too. its cheaper cause you don't swim around as much in a net I guess
  11. hmm maybe not since they started hiding. ill try tonight.
  12. no they both hide and ignore the other fish. they have displayed territorial behavour before though.
  13. well pH is 6.5 and ammonia is 0. anything else likely to be a problem?
  14. interesting idea, does it work?
  15. I second vinager, and baking soda is good also. use both together for foaming fun! Washing soda (sodium carbonate) I hear is more powerful than baking soda but I havn't tried it.
  16. most houses have copper hot water pipes. isnt normally a problem with most fish. invertibrates in general are sensitive to copper so if you have any you might need to find an alternative source. If you are worried then several products are availible that 'detoxify heavy metals'. proper pH is one.
  17. hmm, well I havn't done any tests in the last few weeks, but my tank is hardly overstocked, and i do WC every weekend. might do some tests.
  18. recently I got a school of emerald catfish for my tank and at first my flags were fine, but for the last week or so they have been hiding and not even coming out to eat. I occasionally see them right before lights out so I know they are both still alive. At first i thought they might be breeding but they havn't been territoral at all like I would expect. Any ideas?
  19. with goldfish lots of media is a must unless you want to be cleaning it every 5mins. maybe get someting like a ehiem pickup 2012 and turn it down.
  20. if you get kissing gouramis try and get the green wild form ones, they look awesome
  21. oh so its a power filter? I thiught you ment you just had a air powered filter
  22. that wasn't really what we ment by a decent filter....
  23. any tank with goldfish need a good filter esp. one that size. most coldwater fish are fine with goldfish: mountain minnows, danios, some barbs, peppered corydoras.
