    Hey

Sounds like you are on the right track. I think Ron (Discusguru) still does discus...at any rate his discus are superbly grown, well bred and are beautiful, he also is a fantastic source of advice. When I used to keep discus I kept them with Otos (for alage control) and Kuhli loaches (for hoovering) and had no problems with them bothering the discus (but I always kept the breeding pair alone) - very affordable (and minimal waste compared to plecos and ancistrus who poo a lot). I personally would pop another large canister filter on there in addition to the 305 you have...can't have enough filtration...once you go there you'll never go back.
  2. Yeah, I got the Yeah, I got some basalt grit from them called Charcoal and I absolutely love it, it is a little less black than that (which I like as it isn't so contrast-y), but clearly black. Highly recommended.
  3. I have always been mad about animals of all kinds. My mum kept fancy guppies when I was a kid and being into animals I gradually took them over and by the time I was 10 I had a complement of tanks in my room with all sorts of guppies. Have had fish ever since really but never went back to guppies....
  4. Shmoo is one too, was just on the Private trade forum earlier this week.
  5. Piece of gravel stuck in her mouth?
  6. Good to know! For those who like their snails....
  7. Some people routinely clean filters bi monthly and others only clean them when the flow decreases. I tend to be in the latter category. However, if you keep filter wool in there, it will tend to clog up frequently so you may want to replace that more often and just leave the rest of it as it is. Just a personal choice.
  8. Vacuum the substrate well and keep the water for the new tank. It will look mucky for a few hours until the filter does its job. However, if you know the filter is well cycled I personally wouldn't hesitate to swap out the substrate. HTH

Hey milkchops, good to see you join the forums!
  10. Saw some at Organism today, they were gorgeous, really lovely movement, slender and silvery, but quite pricey. I really wanted some.

    Hello

Hi Ashley, welcome to the forums. There is a good fish group here in town, called Totally Tanked. It is a great place to meet others in the area who are into fish. We are having a movie night at the aquarium this Saturday. If you are interested in coming, let me know. Also, you can keep an eye on the club forum (viewforum.php?f=6) to see when the next meeting is. Jen
  12. I bred some silkies with some frizzles....and called them sizzles!
  13. My preference with the 405s is to use Eheim Mech media in the lower basket, then the ceramic noodles that came with the filter in the middle baskets and topped with filter wool then Eheim Pro media in the top basket. Works very well IMO.

    Hi there

    Hi, welcome to the forum.
  15. I developed a similar problem in 3 out of 4 of my Jagers that were about 4 years old. After one spontaneously failed (turned off) I didn't want to use them anymore so I replaced them all with the new Fluval M series and have been very happy with them...but time will tell.
  16. Ooooo, I want one!!!! :bounce:
