  1. No the best size tank for breeding Discus is a 2foot cube, you can't have it too big because when wrigglers leave the wall they sometimes have trouble locating their parents, you remove them into a larger tank when they're big enough to eat BBS or decap brineshrimp eggs then the parents get a rest.
  2. hahaha adodge - that sounds awesome for our prank we just shaving foam'd the whole school and and toilet papered it then stacked all the picnic tables together forming a giant tower..needless to say this private school was not impressed
  3. where do you get phoszorb from? is it safe with fish??
  4. I guess I'm just pedantic, if I get a Discus with bad proportions then I flick them no use in my display tank..hate the look of small bodies and large eyes. But I guess if you want them in a community tank you probably wouldn't care about their proportions anyway.
  5. I don't think that any fry would have a chance in your community tank, you should put the pair into a 2foot cube on their own and use those sponge filters.
  6. Not a good idea to keep Discus that young with any other fish, they look tiny...you will stunt their growth. Petshops are always getting things wrong - there's a lps that's still selling SAEs as Flying Foxes...
  7. should make this into sticky
  8. NCEA was easy peasy..guttered that they took away School Cert though - missed out by two years. it's not hard to get into uni these days  even if you fail NCEA L3 you just do the C.U.P course and that's basically no-fail..heaps of international students here in Unis because they would've had no chance getting in overseas where entrance is tougher.
  9. McCain is too outdated...seriously the only reason why he got so far is because he married into a rich family...besides how can he expect people to take him seriously with Sarah Palin as his VP?
  10. ......Peruvians have tiny little dots and Altums don't?
  11. oh really...that never crossed my mind  Im talking phenotypically - what are the differences
  12. thought it was parasitic fluke that Angels give Discus? meh guess for me it was if you had Discus why would you bother with Angels, besides you shouldn't have just one Discus on their own - should at least have 5 or 6. what are the differences between Altums and Peruvians? they seems quite similar..is it just the width of the stripes?
  13. you keep Discus with Angels?
  14. Goldfish that live outside in ponds might have built up immunity against these where fish that don't live in those conditions might not fare so well..
  15. my Discus and cockatoos and tetras took to it fed them off the end of a skewer. Kiwiplymouth - will PM you when I've gone through my frozen bloodworms
  16. mine's always making little bubblenests lol...after every water change he makes a new one. Really cute
  17. excuse my ignorance, but what is that exactly?
  18. think when female fighters show stripes then they are ready to breed...
  19. wow I'm glad I only have hayfever lol..there are less fortunate people out there than me! Also received mine today - will try them tonight at snack time and see how they go

    Discus

just get a huge 400L glass tank made with glass dividers you can stick in when you get a pair...that way you'll get to tanks out of one
  21. there's heaps of sand out there - Dalton's propagation sand, or there's a type of black sand you can get from local gardening centres or white riversand - but remember sand is easy to disturb....

    Discus

I've always thought it took 2 years for Discus to fully mature - some look like they're breed young due to being stunted. I wouldn't keep two Discus under 100L - breeders overseas use larger breeding tanks because wastes builds up quicker in smaller tanks, you do realise with babies/small you'll need to do 50% water changes if not more daily right? (the pro's do at least 75% water changes daily to maintain good colour and growth - I only manage 50% and mine average around 6/7cm) Discus release hormones to suppress other Discus from growing hence importance of keeping water quality prime and they're messy eaters.
