  1. i love that brown discus. and the sag seems happy too :bounce:
  2. my tank is wonky. so where's the full tank shot? :bounce:
  3. a phosphate spike would be the least of your worries
  4. I reckon i could have kept plants. and trained them not to eat them. but in africa - where these guys are from there are no plants as such in lake malawi. well not that i know of any ways. lots of rocks though, lol.. and the contrast of the dark rock with blue and yellow flashes make it look nice. more realistic this way too. and its a change for me too :bounce: I haven't kept dems before, but yellows are easy as ever to keep. dems are ok in big groups or they will fight until there is only 1 left if you have only small groups, or few fish. all fish are easy to keep if you take care of the water conditions. :bounce:
  5. I was told that vets (by vet students) were not allowed to treat possums at all.
  6. Ive almost finished the assignment. will do after shorty  and the assignment
  7. what he said. named! lol.. although i have never seen a starwars movie . not that i remember any how. I shall call one pedro, one voldemort and one phoenix (all named after dead siamese fighters.. its sort of like tradition).
  8. is that your tank? hairgrass gets really tall unless you can get the dwarf variety - not so common.
  9. sag subulata. but in really good light it gets tall. you could try the real dwarf sag if you can get your hands on it - i think alanmin will know the name. either that or dwarf chain sword.
  10. :bounce: Many thanks :bounce: It remains a mystery no more
  11. lol.. OK so there is no secret hidden reason apart from cause it can be done?

    hi hi

hello, and welcome Alienara. Equipment in those countries will be cheaper, especially if you know where the wholesale / grey markets are - but none of the equipment has the slightest chance of having a warranty that is valid in NZ. so its a tradeoff with price and after sales service and reliability really. Best of luck with the hobby!
  13. Nice setup. :bounce: But I don't understand why some people grow plants emersed (i know for wholesalers its more viable, cheaper, takes up less space, etc) but with the exception of crypts where you get nice flowers- what is the reason to have the emersed setup? do they grow faster? or is it just for flowers?
  14. you should wash all veges before you feed them to the fish (or any other pet) - or eat them yourself.
  15. surely you knew that was not pump action? Im surprised it is still firing really - spring should have broken by now
  16. so when you do WC's do you just change some water, or do you do full on gravel vacs (or remove poo from the bottom).
  17. oh wow. interesting stuff. good on you for saving your fish. :bounce:
  18. no idea of duration of heat pads. I presume 24 hr. I think I will need more dems. 25 dems just won't do it. 15 yellows look nice though :bounce:
  19. :bounce: :bounce: Little piggies are already eating! :bounce: :bounce: Just put some spirulina flake in a syringe and injected it into the tank, and they went wild. I think I see the dominant ones already - brightly coloured and attempting to claim territory.
  20. nahh you just crack the heatpad (don't break it) and chuck it in with the fish bags. If you reuse heatpads, chuck them in the microwave and chuck them in - not so effective on long journeys. no point in wrapping the bags in paper; however ensuring the poly box is completely sealed is the best thing.
  21. I shall take millions :bounce: Thanks! I still have 2 small crypts floating in the tank, as i can't bear to part with all the plants.
  22. It was overnight courier. reached in the morning, before I woke up, lol. - so about 15 - 18 hours. 1 box - standard cardbox box size lined with thick poly. a poly box will do too - but the cardboard version works really well too. 1 heatpad use 2 if not sure, especially if the box is going to the SI where its colder than palmy. 5 small bags in one box. normally people use tall thin bags filled with air. about 8 fish on avg in each bag. double pack the bags. Oh and label it fragile and live tropical fish a million times on the outside, lol.
