  1. No I love them. I have 3000LPH worth of filtration on my 200L tank
  2. yep its fine. the warehouse has some long and thin ones that have been used effectively before.
  3. you don't need a blue tube. a blue tube (for plants) is actually bright white. a blue blue tube is a marine blue tube, and you won't need it unless you are messing with growth factors like me. just use either 10000K - really white or 6500K - yellowish in conjunction with each other (like juwel tanks) and your plants will be happy as. don't use filters.
  4. I have one, and she is an absolute sweet heart. I keep her at the shop, but she is totally harmless.
  5. it means you have a boy! he is nice too. feed him a nice quality food and breed from him.
  6. you are the second person today (that I know) that has possibly bred ottos! this other person has some sticking on his glass, but they are small and the neons are popping them off...
  7. those are not antristicrus's. white spot antristrus's are probably starlights. note - probably.
  8. I got them in at animates here once and i was pretty disappointed to say the least. they were only 1 cm long or so and well 24 bucks for a 1cm fish is a bit of an ask really
  9. they should be available at shops... catch is they are about $24 each!!!!
  10. call it a zebra, cause that's about as close to the ID as is possible I would say.
  11. oh no you chucked out all the good substrate!!! all you needed was time and patience! LOL  well this works too and looks nice, so have fun setting up the whole thing!
  12. OMG! I WANT YOUR TANK!!!!!!! (shouts at the top of my voice!_) It is absolutely stunning~!!!!!!! ps- whetu you can touch my rocks any time
  13. why don't you just chuck a prawn (dead one like the packet ones) in there for a few days? about 2-3 days in it will get some fluffy stuff - that's when you chuck it out and put another one in. That's how I'd do it if you cant find any glass shrimp.
  14. It probably ate something. climbing up the walls indeed.
  15. There are lots of fish on the existing list that aren't bought in because of the bureaucracy and level of technical expertise required to clear them once they are in NZ. They are ok to bring in, but once they are here the procedures undertaken to clear them are not economically viable, so they are just not brought in. Having said that, there are a lot of fish that are brought in to NZ under the wrong name - not intentionally so, but under a generic name. Plecos are the perfect example of that. If L numbers were used, we probably wouldn't have the limited selection of plecos that we do actually have. I think we are all optimistically hoping that the process is somewhat simplified this time round.
  16. +1 You don't want an xs. of Ammonia in the tank, just enough to get the process started and then the tank will cycle as normal. When I set my marine tank up - It was about 4 months of "setting" the tank before my first real inhabitants went in. The corals went in 3 months into the process. Maybe I was being a little too cautious, but i had synthetically started the tank with red sea max salt.
  17. yep the numbers overlap. I got my figures of people off plantedtank.net (go check it out, there are some inspiring tanks out there).
  18. yeah for sure. I have used well in excess of 40kg or rock in my tank. about the same as the amount of gravel one would expect in a tank that size.
  19. the bristle noses and the algae eaters munch at it all day. it does not grow tall and only grows awesomely
  20. I have some absolutely beautiful algae in my tank. It only grows on the rock and no where else. I use 18000K lights. Ill take a pic of it and post it on here.
  21. there is supposed to be a 2-3 cm layer of aquabasis and then a 4-5cm layer of gravel on top of it.
  22. I didnt think you had to rinse it at all. that will get rid of a lot of the nutrients. lots of substrate on top of it ensures that it wont get out. brown algae is pretty normal in a new tank. it comes in almost every new tank ive set up even without a substrate fert.
