  1. its probably poop. eggs are round. people normally have trouble giving away larger gold spot plecos and red spot plecos because they get massive.
  2. Juwels are awesome tanks, so congrats for getting one. The Internal filters are good, but dependent on your livestock stocking you may need / prefer a cannister filter (external). If your tank is new and covered under warranty please don't remove the internal filter as that will void your warranty. The lights on the tank are good, and it is possible to grow almost any plant in there, but if you want a tank with a carpeting plant like glosso it would pay to add more lighting. this can be done by getting a hagen T5 Ho hood and tubes to your liking. these hoods fit perfectly above the tanks and all you need to do is take off one of the black plastic lids. As far as substrate goes - Daltons propagating sand is not only pretty, but very good for planted tanks and looks natural. it's also very very pocket friendly. Carpeting plants that will be happy without a lighting upgrade - e. tenellus tenellus sag. microfolia Lileopolis novoe zealandae / brazilensis - grassy glosso - won't hurt to try - growth may be slow but it may get there eventually - definitely be better with the above mentioned lighting upgrade. and a few others. Add reflectors to your tubes if you have not already done so. That's almost 100% more light without too much expense. Almost forgot - Run DIY CO2 in the tank too.
  3. The 405's are actually the best filters I have. I also run an eheim 2028, and I think the 405's are the overall winners. Better hoses, cheaper parts, equally silent, easy to prime, easy to clean... They are all silent. The plant tanks at animates here are castle tanks. We normally use an eheim pro III 2080? (largest one) on one of them and another eheim on the other castle tank. recently we put a fluval 405 on the other castle tank, and its actually gruntier than the pro III. The fillters are run side by side and are subject to the same conditions.
  4. the 404 sucks. it always did. the 405 is brilliant. one of the best out there in that size range. why compare a filter that is no longer made to one that is still going strong?
  5. we used to be able to buy clear silicone tubing for $2 per metre a while ago and then this blue branded thing came in and that was the last of the clear tubing. i have some of it, but also have some blue and green.
  6. Thanks. LHS - left hand side. RHS - right hand side. I hope nothing bad happens tonight.
  7. I especially like the auzereus and the marleri. great pics as always
  8. Here's a thought.... do you have an air stone running at night?
  9. the subulata will grow to 50cm in length if not more, and the Lileopolis will stay short lol. I dunno. I'd do glosso with the moss and rocks and java fern and anubias with the wood.
  10. I like the anubias, the moss and the java fern. i like the crypt, but maybe not in this tank.
  11. same species. i reckon electric blue veit tail rams would be pretty darn cool
  12. this is an older pic but shows what i mean. you can see the constant flow on the RHS, about 2800LPH and its dead on the LHS although there is another filter outlet and inlet there doing another 1400LPH. (click the img). No air stone in this tank.
  13. well done. that's awesome.
  14. no, it was because without water movement there was no oxygen diffusing into the water. I have a dead end of the tank which is the LHS and a high water movement end which is the RHS. Ill post a pic to show you what I mean.
  15. wasn't going to post this but meh.. had a very very close call with the tank early this morning. what a night! I stayed up to wish a friend happy birthday. Then fell asleep at about 1am or so. Few hours later I hear splashing sounds like fish jumping so (and this is 4am) i wake up and put a small light on and all my fish are at the top of the tank gasping for air! I jump out of bed, evict the apple snails from their tank. discus are literally and i mean really popping out of the water head first. put my hand in the tank, pick out the discus one by one as they just sat there, and put them in the snail tank. same with my L168. Then i noticed that i had over filled my tank when i did the wc as there was no movement on the RHS of the tank at the top - its how i aerate the tank. i quickly lower the water a bit and go to put the air pump on. - its a brand new eheim 400LPH pump that i really like. and! it does not work. so i take out the pipe from the nozzle out let and it spits out water! lots and lots of water.. so i disconnect it, and keep it aside, and just remove and put 30L of new water into the tank. All this at 4am! Gah.. cardinals and the other fish picked up immediately and stopped gasping for air. I removed one of the CO2 diffusers from the tank as well. Discus looked happy in the apple snail tank, and thankfully the L168 did too. I didn't need nets to catch any of them. All transferred to the main tank now, and are happy. The air pump still works! and is in front of the dehumidifier as we speak. it will stay there for the next few days. All in all I think ive lost 1 cardinal and nothing else. phew. Then i woke up again at 5 am cause i dreamed that the carpet flooded. so i got out of bed again and took out all the potential shyponable air tubes out the tank. also woke up at 6am to make sure everything was ok. Then woke up at 10 am. what a night. next time i do a water change ill make sure i leave the aeration space I have created.
  16. haven't worked in a while. but if they were the fluval ones on PFK i would have read through it. the mossie rasboras are dirt cheap... and i mean dirt cheap for what they are. rotate your heater so it sits parallel to the base of the tank about 2 inches off the substrate. That's how i have my 300W one in my 4ft tank. all you need with the glandulosa is 1 stick per 'bunch'. plant them individually - evenly spaced. mine isn't even dug into the substrate.
  17. that's ludwigia glandulosa. its an amazing plant! fish suggestion - the new mossie raboras. order like 25 of them for yourself. i want them but dont have any where to put them.
  18. It is now black-water! The black-water has eliminated my algae problems, and i actually like a small tank being that tannin stained. Would never in a million year do that to a big tank though. Pictures are far too large for here so view them on here - resized and all. http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/tank- ... uffer.html
  19. easier said than done. try it. you never know what happens until you experiment. we don't know the genotype so can't really comment.
  20. if its hard, its probably old and was left out of water for a period of time. just pull them out and buy new cups that fit right on.
  21. I can't really justify spending shipping for just one fish, and would like a red eye puffer male from animal antics, or any one else out there with one for sale. is any one making the tauranga - palmy trip?
  22. weird. my old eheim internal is about 6 years old now and doesn't stick cause the suction cups are heard. the newer ones have a different rubber suction cup that should always stick. if its covered under the warranty you'd be able to do a straight swap or get new cups for it depending on who you dealt with.
  23. That was a joke jehH  yea, ryanjury sent me a really cool article about salt in rift lake tanks when i was setting up my tank.
