I think it may have been the CO2 because it's only a 30L tank. My shellies died when I did a simple WC with normal soft water.

You got flamed because you practically asked for it. You are dealing with a bunch of dedicated fish-keepers that don't just keep fish at home for the heck of it, but because for many of us fish-keeping is more a passion than any thing else. Have a read over your post and think about it.

I think the whole thing would look better without the rock on the LHS. If you're planting the tank, don't worry about what the tank looks like before you plant it - change and move things around as the plants grow naturally. The tank will so to speak 'evolve' more naturally.

Totally worth it. I prefer the darker reddish medium sized pellet.

Plants in my experience will do better (and are soooo much easier to plant) in a small sized gravel. But if you have cories like I do, then you will notice such a huge difference in their habits when they have sand the dig around in!
