  1. What a shame we aren't allowed to keep them here, and DoC killed them all...
  2. Thank god Hannah [gf] doesn't read this forum....
  3. Yes, DoC does, they'd be the best people to ask.
  4. I disagree with all the people who say sand is easier to clean. I find its harder to clean because you can't siphon it as easily to suck up all the muck. 3-6mm gravel is easier to clean IMO as you can give it a good thorough going over with the gravel siphon with out loosing half your substrate. Coarser than that looks bad IMO. Bare bottom or tiles is the way to go if you really want easy to clean.
  5. I know Mt Roskill has an AT, I'm trying to remember if the one I saw at Albany was an AT or an IT. IT's are much more common, and have a definate silver colour, the cartoon pic is a little misleading as ST and IT aren't usually that yellow until they're large and perfectly stable.
  6. Do they put up a good fight? I wonder if you could take the jaws out like you would with a shark. I can't believe people keep them in aquariums...

    Plywood tank

I agree with Ryan that its probably more hassle than its worth unless you're going really big. My 150x70x60 tank in 12mm with a hole and overflow was only $380. When we eventually settle down I'm planning an indoor pond [with a viewing window or two] around 8x4x2.5', at that size glass would be bloody expensive and heavy, so timber is a better option. Greg only charges around $350-400 for a standard 6x2x2' tank, so its probably not worth building your own at that size.
  8. If you're lucky you could get a couple of loaves of bread with that. *edit* that looks like a GATF on it!!!

    Plywood tank

If the H3 treatment is getting into the water then I'd be more concerned about the water getting into the plywood and causing it to rot...

    NAME THAT FISH!

It depends if the person who started the thread has specified a number of questions. Personally I don't think there should be a limit on the number of questions, I'd prefer having more of a cluedo-style rule where each member only gets one guess at the species, but can ask as many questions about the fish. It would stop the stab-in-the-dark posts and help people learn a little more.
  11. Would be nice to see Lowndes make it three in a row. I can't stand all the holden vs ford bull, at the end of the day I just want to see some good close racing cos thats what motorsport is about!

    Plywood tank

Stella is right about the marine ply, its designed to be heated and curved to make boats. You want H3 treated ply. You'll need to build a wooden frame to support the ply, and line it with pond liner or fibreglass. Have a read through the DIY forum on www.monsterfishkeepers.com as there are many people who have built wooden tanks on there.
  14. Yeah they're bioballs, and as the name suggests they're for biological filtration.

    Name that fish #10

I know that, look at the time I made my post, I was asking the same question you were....
  16. There is no such thing as a "borneo tiger", which is yours? It is most likely to be an indonesian tiger, although there have been a few american tigers available recently [not labeled as such, of course]. Mine took 3 years to reach about 11" in a 300L tank. Feed them shrimp, beefheart and other meaty foods, and they appreciate good clean water.
  17. Funny story along these lines... There is a genus of plants called Stapelia which have finger-like stems and are only identifiable by their flower, the stems are nearly identical. While browsing trademe at work I noticed someone using a pic of a Stapelia flower from our website for a plant he was selling. Obviously he'd done a google search for Stapelia, found a pic of the flower that looked like the one he was selling and decided to use that pic. I saved him as a favorite seller to keep an eye on his listings to make sure he didn't steal any more of our photos. A few days later I got an email from trademe with his new listings, one of which was "Stapelia Refrigerator Magnet". Eh?! I thought. Then I clicked, and googled 'Stapelia refrigerator magnet', and found the same pic he was using to sell the plant on the website of a company selling fridge magnets. Obviously his english (and botanical Latin) were very poor, and he thought the species was called Refrigerator Magnet because thats what the title of the page was! Anyway, in this case all you can do is try to inform the seller of his incorrect identification and hope he's accepting of it (unlike half the dimwits on trademe who seem to be experts in everything)...
