  1. So letting it sit is really just a waste of time (aside from bringing it up to temperature)?
  2. Who knows? In a limited population there will always be a degree of inbreeding, but the difference between nature and the hobby is natural selection...
  3. It happens... http://www.arowana.com.sg/gallery5.html I'd say its not ideal, but better than having no tortoises in NZ!!
  4. I've got a 220L barrel set up for doing water changes on my 630L tank to pre-heat water and to let the chlorine evaporate, how long do I need to let the water sit (with an airstone running) before the chlorine goes away?
  5. The dark grey stuff I have in my big tank comes from Stone and Water World, and its about $20 per sack. I used two sacks for that tank, needs a lot of washing too...
  6. sounds alright, but 1200 high is pretty tall, I think mine is 900h and I'm taller than you and still have to stand on a chair half the time if I want to get into it! Have they made them before?
  7. Would need to keep it confidential so it doesn't become a thieving register...
  8. Because if you lived where I do they'd get nicked pretty quickly!
  9. I've seen it done with big tanks (600g!) but never done it myself. The biggest concern for me is that the edges of the tank aren't evenly supported as they would be with a length of steel or timber running under them. Unless it is crazy thick and the blocks are close together, ply of customwood will sag in between the blocks, remember that glass does not bend at all, so the ply/customwood won't do a very good job of spreading the load. At the very lesat I would build a 4x2 table-top to sit on top of the blocks.
  10. There will be crushed shell in it, which would be good for your rift lake fish but not so good for others. Also AFAIK its illegal to take sand from a beach...
  11. Not more expensive than a broken tank! But yeah, it will cost more than cinder blocks...
  12. I don't like it, get someone to build you a timber one.
  13. Get a little 50W heater so you can have it fully submerged and less obvious, its pretty dodgy having it sticking out of the water!! That aside, it looks good.
  14. Not ideal for cichlids then, lacking in footprint. You could have a school of larger tetras or barbs as someone suggested (or rainbows) and perhaps some catfish to help clean up.
  15. Cut back on the food until the filter is running properly. Less waste will mean less nitrites.
  16. Green terror could get a bit aggressive as it grows, the blue jacks aren't as aggressive as normal jacks from what I've heard. What are the dimensions of the tank?

    20 Questions game

It got Shaggy from Scooby Doo, after a fair few questions, and it told me his last name was Rogers which I didn't know!! Guessed Joey Ramone too, although I think it was going for Kurt Cobain for a while...
  18. Looking good!! I'd really love a couple, but next year is looking like a good time to buy a house so I'd better not even suggest it to Hannah...
  19. No comparrison, Ehiem = Becks, AquaOne = Double Brown. That said, I don't mind DoBro for a cheep summer beer and my two aqua one canisters are still working fine, although my 700LPH Ehiem flows a heck of a lot more than my 700LPH AquaOne...
  20. Its hard to say because you can't see anything behind the top horizontal 4x2 to see how the legs are attached and what is distributing the weight. I would be inclined to say no as it looks poorly designed and there is a heck of a lot of weight on it, but then if its been set up for two years already...
  21. Spiny eels are pigs, good work getting it to eat pellets!!!
  22. more cylinders, there's no replacement for displacement... ... other than technology. Why do you think more and more supercars are using smaller higher revving motors with forced induction insted of 20L v18's to make power? As for thrills, I think doing a 72 second lap around puke in a civic with a stock 1600cc motor is pretty thrilling, perhaps you should try it, you'd probably need fresh underpants after breaking that late into the hairpin from over 200kmh...
  23. But they're not that cheap and may come pre-scented. Bird netting could work I guess, hadn't thought of that!
  24. I couldn't find the "pot scrubbers" that the yanks always go on about, and just used bioballs instead.
  25. LOL!! I'd never eat meat or seafood from there (although I probably have/do from various restaurants) but they're good for fish food!!
