  1. Maybe we should start a petition, could possibly get the might of the catholic church behind it, after all they are anti-abortion...
  2. Is this a repeat of the one that was on a while ago? (this one?) If so I've probably still got a copy on DVD somewhere...

    Discus tankmates

I saw [in person too, not on the net!] a tank last weekend that had a mix of discus, uaru, clown loaches, huge bichirs, dats and others, it wasn't planted either. It was around 3000L though! Still, I don't think discus are as wussy as some people like to think they are, I think once they're bigger they'll be fine with kribs.
  4. Good idea, didn't realise there was even a process/possibility of that. It sounds easier than becoming a zoo....
  5. My biggest concern with keeping them outside in Auckland is the little scumbags that jump into your back yard looking for a quick buck...
  6. Curse the stupid authorities for making leopard tortoises containment only!!!   Auckland zoo are putting eggs in the freezer because they aren't allowed to sell the young (would be a nice little earner for them too), and Ti Point have got a few little ones, they're so damn cute too!!
  7. Mind you, expensive fish, crap beer, expensive crap cars, australians.... But on the other hand, loads of lizards, warmer climate, australian girls....
  8. Thats the ornate bichir, Polypterus ornatipinnis. They can get up to 2', mine is close to 18". Used to be very rare until about 18 months ago when a heap of little ones started appearing in the shops, now they're pretty common, although they do take a little while to get this big (unless you keep them in a massive tank).
  9. Time for a bit of an update. New I need some better lighting and another pump to increase the flow through the sump. At the monemnt the inhabitants are; green aro 20cm ornate bichir 45cm 2 uaru 18-20cm rotkeil severum 16cm 3 A. heckelii 12cm (the fouth is in a hospital tank with damage around his eye 8 clown loaches 14-18cm L27 Tapajos royal plec 8cm The severum is going as soon as I get around to taking it to Phillip Collis (no I haven't forgotten Phil!) and once they're big enough I'll be adding a G. altifrons (aka surinamensis) and S. leucosticta (aka "jurupari"), and possibly a Gymnogeophagus balzanii. I even made a crappy video... http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=tI55di1L6vk
  10. Pfft, how hard can it be to become a zoo...
  11. Supasi I had something like that made from a coke bottle and soda stream machine years ago. Mind you for $2 its probably cheaper than a coke!
  12. and leopard tortoises, what I wouldn't give to get one of those guys...... What about the day geckos and cunninghams? Is there a website somewhere with a list that I can find out what is and isn't containment?
  13. My aro is getting two feeds of pellets per day and one of shrimp. Everything else gets fed once or twice a day.
  14. When I was at Ti Point Ivan said chameleons were containment only...
  15. They were stolen on the same day as the reptiles from Hamilton Zoo. He still has two (I think?) which have been moved into the big enclosure with the water dragons, coastal beardies, cunninghams skinks etc for better security.
  16. Yeah they're day geckos. I was there a couple of weeks ago, and the battery on the camera went flat before I could even take one pic!! Just wondering how many of the animals there are "containment animals", ie you need a zoo license for them? Day geckos? Cunninghams skink? Shinglebacks?
  17. Pfft NCEA. My other half just sat her final Chartered Accountants exam, SIX HOURS long and over $5k to do the course!!!! Needless to say we were pretty stoked when we found out today that she passed.
  18. Doh! I'm going to be out of town that weekend, leaving on Friday afternoon, but if you want a hand packing stuff up, breaking down tanks etc on Thursday night I'm free after work.
  19. Awesome Mark!! Is that Bjorns old one or another one? I really have to get down to Tauranga one of these days...
  20. Good idea, I bought 10 medium CL's last time it was on in Auckland!

  22. I think you'd be better to buy them all in one lot, unless the shop doesn't have them or they are unhealthy. Otherwise its 5 times the risk of introducing something like whitespot to your tank. Keep the tank at at least 27*C, good current and highly oxygenated water, feed a variety of foods like shrimp, courgette, shrimp pellets, bloodworms etc and they little ones should soon put on some size.
  23. Yeah, tank is too small for anything but a temporary grow-out for surinamensis [actually G. altifrons]. I'd say add a school of tetras, cardinals, rummys or something similar. Dwarf flag cichlids, or Apistogrammas could both be other options.
  24. 5 would be the bare minimum IMO, more is better. I have 8 large (15-18cm) in my big tank and 14 smaller ones growing out in a 4', it was awesome when they were all in together, seeing 4cm clowns schooling with the two big 18cm ones! The 3' tank will do for a while, but you'll want to move them in to something bigger in about 12 months to avoid stunting their growth. A 4' will do for a few years after that.
