I want to build up a native shed of geckos and hopefully I will one day get a licence for a tuatara. So this is the specie I want to start with, how do i go about this.

Ok, I want to get a licence to keep native gecko species, I have never kept a reptile specie myself but am in love with geckos. Um so what does the licence require? What type of licences are their? Is there a licence per each specie or endangered/difficulty level.

Thge fluvals are GREAT, um mayby a 303/304 would be great...

no they are desexed before leaving the facility. Not the adult pairs but the babies. Adults stay and breed in the facility then the babys are desexed and sold on.

how you going to explain that to customs when you declear it

um nah if we brought in 15 pairs of macaws breed them inside the faiclity, desexed them and released hem then we woudnt have to worry about the bloodlines because their wont be any breeding out-side the facility.

Its great that we have these discussions but I think its worthless unless you say this to MAF... We cant have lionfish or anything that is noxious because its a danger to humans.

if you want to import Birds then do this... Apply for MAF to create and IHS for the birds intended. Select your list VERY carefully, only select birds that there is many proven documents that can prove that they cant survive in NZ... In this IHS state that they can only be imported into a containment facility. After you get this all done (may be up to 3 years) get them into the country... breed them... Then go to ERMA and they will let you release them if you can prove that they cant survive.

I agree that no country should risk its biosecurity, and yes you can argue that everything is a risk when it comes to importing/reptiles/birds/mammels I dont see why we cant have species that cant possible survive in NZ waters/air/land!!!

If there was an assigned importer that imported parrots where they where THROUGHLY quarantined in a facility that caters to nuclear missiles where they are tested for anything and everything possible... Then there was a controlled release such as neutered males only or spayed females. Even if released they couldn’t breed and establish themselves here. For what they would sell for I highly doubt anyone would even consider letting them go... Just simple controls and regulations!
