  1. brackish tank low salinity , no need to be fussy as it changes so often in an estuarine environment any way so a a 4kg bag of marine salt will last nearly a year perhaps some mollys a fig 8 puffer and bumble bee gobies
  2. i lived in a hostel in hamilton for a year and fish would have been the only pets you were allowed
  3. lol :rotf: it is rather large looking
  4. hi a work mate of mine has a leaking tank and wants to get it repaired ,with a qoute/invoice for insurance purposes(not earthquake related) i suggested inside oceans to him but also have heard errol from B=s pets was still making tanks from home if any body has his contact details or knows of somebody else repairing tanks could they send me a pm thanks
  5. yep thats it my lil one in my tank i trimmed the impellor down to reduce the flow i probably wouldnt bother if i were to buy a new one id just aim it more at the surface
  6. its certainly a lot bigger i thinking the surface area has something to do with it
  7. lost a bit of water here at home in bryndwr but nothing fell over i had just hopped into bed and got comfortable but got out of bed pretty quickly. i have just started a new job which is out in hornby and the damage there was worse than the sept or feb quake heaps of stuff fell off shelfs lights fell down and a massive 5m2 deisel heater moved six inches from the wall and disconnected from the flue
  8. im overweight partly because of long term medication(cant change it when its the only one that works) but also my love of pies. my fiancee has been doing weight watchers last 10 months ( on and off due to quakes) she was not very overweight but wanted to lose weight for our wedding next year . she dosent diet in the weekend and gets minimal exercise but has managed to lose 10 kilo in the last 4 months. im quite enjoying the weightwatchers meals as they can be be quite nice the good thing about weight watchers is that it teaches you healthy lifestyle choices without sacrificing the taste or feeling like you have an empty stomach
  9. they do alright good value for money
  10. i have one an e300 works ok cant say its better or worse than a jager its a bit smaller than a jager and looks cool its main point is it that it is micro-processor controlled and takes a measurement from the glass of the unit rather than the air inside the unit(like a thermostatically controlled one) it has no thermostat to crap out but is susceptible to power surges as i found out  . i think the jager rating of 1000l is for a tank in a room with an ambient temperature of 22 deg i doubt the e300 would do that but for our purposes in nz a jager wont either .
  11. how long has the coral rock been in the tank ? sometimes it has red/pink parts on it natrually some of my old liverock does (and ddi when it was dead too)
  12. on my tank you saw im just using a hob with purigen as i have a large skimmer and the tank is only temporary and too small to house the skimmer but an additional option could be a small skimmer like http://www.trademe.co.nz/Pets-animals/Fish/Pumps-filters/auction-385259428.htm from organism or a bubble magus one like the bm-qq. also if you want to look at leds have a look at lee tak neon and sign on blenheim road he has high power leds in different colours even a 10w one he sells mr16 and gu10 led bulbs in various wattages and colours also. a diy fuge could be a container that is higher than the tank and sits on the stand behind the tank, with a sort of spout made so that the water overflows gently into the tank(think HOB style filter) then a samll powerhead pumping from the tank to the container , slap a light on it and your done nice and simple
  13. thats only 13w id go with something like this http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm/454324180-Freeshipping-45W-LED-Aquarium-light-white-blue-color-benefit-to-coral-and-marine-life-wholesalers.html
  14. my friend had his glass lids slide in and smash he has cut lids out of 3.5mm perspex which is about $20 a 600mmx600mm sheet they flex a little but he plans to brace them slightly with the offcuts these wont smash but will be no better than the glass was at keeping the water in he has taped 3 of the 4 lids down so hopefully that does it . i would be inclined to go with extra wide euro bracing to catch the slosh prhaps 50 or 60 mm say for a 4ft tank id also use perspex lids
  15. we had stuff fall over but only a speaker was damaged lost plenty of water out of the temporary marine tank but thankfully not as bad as last time but that may be because there isnt much left to fall this time, my freind with the SA cichlid tank had all 4 glass lids fall in and smash and lost about 100l of water to the carpet but the tank is intact thankfully. i now work in hornby and only two things fell off a shelf . the 5.5 wasnt very bad out there 1 person went home and no-one even got up from their seats the 6 however turned work into a skeleton shift .
  16. try getting a good handful of the silt with worms and all and straining it careful thru a some course cloth under a gentle flow . they may also be black worms or a combination of bloodworms and black worms either way bloody good fish food . i think alanmin knows a bit about them , i used to get them out of the creek at my old house
  17. just looks like ordinary pulsing xenia to me but who knows but your tank is looking really good
  18. hey he got the large firemouth as a small one some time ago when critter kingdom was still open on blenheim road it isnt even fully coloured up in that pic , im not sure where to get large firemouths from just keep looking i guess. he would like real plants but is concerned about low levels of lighting (2x30w vs 2ft high tank) also i dont think the plants would last long in there with the cichlids
  19. it will get clearer and clearer as the days go by but if it really bothers you and you have no fish in there at the moment do a few 100% water changes
