  1. perhaps take the fountain attachment off the pond filter and have the outlet under water but pointing up at the surface for agitation but no running water sound
  2. you wouldnt normally use them in a marine tank they support the wrong type of bacteria and can cause nitrate problems you really want more of the bacteria that eats nitrate use coral rock as it has pores that air cant reach so you get anaerobic bacteria .
  3. its just a section of the sump or even tank that is used to house things , it could be housing macro algae(seaweed) which uses nutrients like nitrate and phosphate as it grows and is harvested periodically to export the nutrients from the tank , this type of set up is normally lighted and on a reverse cycle to that of the main tank. it could also have some pieces of live rock in it to allow pods to grow and multiply safe from predators( some will still make it to the tank) also it could be used to house a DSB (deep sand bed) which is just a thick layer of sand deep enough to support anaerobic bacteria which complete the nitrogen cycle, turning nitrate into nitrogen gas, while also housing many beneficial creatures which turn the sand over . a dsb is normally used separately to a refugium but may incorporated as may the macro and live rock in combination
  4. heres a good page with heaps of designs it explains what each bit is for too http://www.melevsreef.com/ http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html

  6. well there is westlands water world over there and plenty of trout my dad lives 10mins south of punakaiki and there is masses of driftwood along that coast (greenstone too if you are lucky) fox river beach is best
  7. for a nano with corals its easy to just use asw as u dont have to play around to get the levels right , unless you live close to a beach with good quality water and dont mind mixing in RODI water to get the salinity right but good on you for deciding to go with tropical you wont regret it
  8. sweet ill get as much cool bits as i can if i go
  9. +1 for me with something like this behind that wall
  10. mine would be a 12ft reef tank 12x2x2 would do , in wall with a small room behind it to keep the sump and all the equipment everything would be computer controlled and it would be more about the equipment than the livestock as thats my main interest in fishkeeping
  11. my mate found a nice bit out near woodend beach but they are few and far in between iim looking at going over the coast in a few weeks ill see what i can find you
  12. i have heard that using coral rock from freshwater tanks is a bad idea as while its been in fresh water it will have absorbed phosphates which will leech into your tank and could cause algae issues for some time. you may be able to get away without using a chiller if its in an air conditioned room and you are a nazi with the controls(set as low as possible at all times) a chiller will be the most expensive part you will need as for a skimmer id reccomend a hang on back model as they dont take up make space in the tank and then you could do away with a sump
  13. they are pretty much the same filter just a different colour/brand the aqua1 cf2400 comes in a uv model as well
  14. spoon

    silicon

it will depend on how thick it is id give it at least 3 days as theres nothing worse than the background popping up once you have filled the tank trust me i know it happened to me on many occaisions because i was impatient
  15. a small piece of gutter guard would to it its not fine enough to block the filter but should be able to keep the bns out you probably dont even need to glue it just sit it in there
  16. i for one thing wouldnt sell fishbowls or products aimed at goldfish that are under 30l but having a clean well laid out store is a must also having nice display tanks big and small ones just to show people who are new to the hobby what can be done and to provide inspiration to those not so new
  17. you dont actually need an anenome to keep clowns , you could try a few bangaii cardinals , if you are lucky enough to get a pair they can be quite easy to breed
