  1. I vaguely remember reading that vallis tends to go through dieoff cycles. It'll grow great, die off, grow again, die...But, I don't know if it's due to some factor other than the life cycle of the vallis. If they need a lot of calcium like Warren says that could be due to them using up all the calcium, dieing then growing again once the calcium builds back up.

    Waterchange

I'd reccommend 25% every week, especially when the tank is cycling. And while the tank is cycling you should keep an eye on the ammonia and do water changes if it starts to get a bit high. I do 50% every week myself.
  3. Why should I go to bed? Normally I'm not even off work for another 6 hours...What're YOU doing up?
  4. Ah...Interesting looking fish those, bit hard to tell the difference between them and a flowerhorn though.
  5. I hope you realize the sprogfish in that second picture will FAR outgrow the tank...
  6. It's not a big place, but when I was there they definitely had more rarer species than most places.

    condensation

    Get a dehumidifier?
  8. Assuming he's well fed and all, I'd estimate it'd probably grow about 5 inches the first year, 3 inches the second and another inch or two the third. Mine is about 3 years old and around 11 inches.
  9. Here's my not a reef tank at the moment. And, Pies, here's my strawberry basslet, Pseudochromis porphyreus(I think), aka magenta dottyback...I'm going to call it a basslet, I don't like "Dottyback"

    Red alge

Heh, I'd have recommended Bristlenoses because they don't grow very large.
  11. Livestock here seems to be in the 4-5X as much range compared to the US. And that's taking the exchange rate into account.

    Knife Fish

I think that's actually some type of catfish, not a knife fish.
  13. I think I woulda been right about at the top if I hadn't crashed so much. I figure I crashed about 10 times but I was only 3 laps down and I lost about a lap or more each time I crashed. So...Uhh...Yeah, that's my excuse.
  14. I've just gone with iron and trace elements mix from a garden center mixed up in some water, squirt a bit in every once in a while. In fact, the only time I got much algae was when I ran out of the mix and didn't get around to mixing up another batch for a month or two.
  15. I didn't say backing paper looked good, I just said I don't really give a damn. That's why that one looks so bad, I haven't touched it in about 3 years. Other than knocking it around while moving hoses, the tank, etc.
  16. I think painting the back of the tank is extra hassle and not necessary...I only even have some backing paper loosely taped on the back of a couple tanks. BUT, I think a medium-dark blue looks best. IMO black looks a bit unnatural(Admitedly more natural than a bunch of plumbing) but odds are you're going to have most of the background covered with rock anyway.
  17. To begin with, there's no such thing as "Keeping the water salted" any more than keeping the water wet with FW. The problem is more keeping the water from getting too salty. If you don't want to drive to get water, everyone I know in the wellington area does, you'll have to buy bags of salt. They're something like $50 for enough salt to make 200 liters.

    platy fry

Is that an actual count or a, "Wow, that must be a hundred!" estimate?
  19. As far as I can tell there are no shelldwellers in NZ. Definitely not Neolamp Ocellatus. Man I'd kill for a bunch of them..Well, maybe not kill, but definitely maim someone for them.

    feeding

I haven't quite settled into a feeding routine with my marine tank yet. At the moment it's every other day unless I can't remember whether or not I fed the previous day. So it's probably more often every day.
  21. Hmmm, Chelated iron is pretty cheap at any garden center. Couldn't hurt to try mixing up a bit in water and dosing the tank every few days, see if it makes a difference.
  22. Why not put it all in at once? It'll shorten your cycle. Maybe if you were getting uncured liverock, but you're not likely to get that in NZ.

    cyano

30 meter tall piles of algae...That'll put yours in perspective, Chimera, what're you complaining about?
  24. No water. The plant will survive just fine without it as long as it's damp.
  25. Moved it here, much better place for it.
