    Red devil cichlid

I'm very skeptical of claims of fish being killed by filters. Unless it's heaps stronger than any I have. I've had guppies and gourami fry in tanks with 404s and 403s and I've only had fish sucked up by the filter a couple times and all of those I'm confident were due to the fish being practically dead anyway.
  4. Take him to a fish store, get him to pick some out. Of course, do some research on the fish before buying it. Oh, and make sure you coach him correctly before taking him. "Remember, good little boys pick South american cichlids" hehe. But, something like a couple platties and a bristlenose would be a good start.

    Vallisneria?

I'm surprised there aren't more cases of introduced hygros. They seem to survive anything and still have the smallest fragment grow.

  7. Many plants in fish stores are also grown emersed(Spelling?) which means they're either the form of an aquatic plant that grows out of the water or they're not even an aquatic plant.

    Sump

Got in touch with Peter at Port Nicholson Glass. Looks like the sump is only going to be $130ish. Woohoo! I was expecting more like twice that.

Too bad boxing shrimp are so UGLY.
  10. Most of them will take credit cards, just require a photocopy of your ID and CC faxed to them, I think.
  11. Hmmm...Talk to wifey, it's her tank, I just have to do all the work with it.
  12. OMG, you musta done more than just hit your head on a tank to mess your face up that much! hehe, Just kidding.

    Sump

Hmmm, I got annoyed that I couldn't find any prices for float switches on the internet. Too much free time at work, I guess. Had a look at Dick Smith's website. I could DIY one to run of the mains for $25ish. Microswitch ($3), some wires ($5), plugs ($15) a hanger (Free), some duct tape(free) and a coke bottle (free) for a float. Should work great! have it running a small pump I've already got...hehehe. Run it off the same timer as the lights so it only doses from a small container at night... Pies will be thinking, "GHETTO!"
  14. Alan, that's a typo, not bad spelling.
  15. I don't think they're suitable for fish if they're over an arms length deep. They're a massive pain in the ass to do anything with. I've got one that's about 4 feet deep. Hate it.

    Sump

Nope, no bio balls, dogmatix. Those circles are actually supposed to be heaters, but I didn't label them. I think I should be able to squeeze the skimmer over to the left more so it's in the first compartment. I'm not worried about light getting into the skimmer, the side of the skimmer that would be towards the lights is opaque, the clear side would be facing away from the sump into the door of the cabinet. The collection cup is clear on the lightward side, but that's no big deal. Yeah, it does make it a slight risk of the pump running dry, but as long as I check the water level every couple days it should be fine. Once it's running we'll see how much I need to top off, that'll be the deciding factor on whether my next purchase is DI and a topoff or a sea swirl. That's part of why I'm wondering if I should make the sump a bit smaller, so I've got room for that kinda thing in the cabinet. I forgot to put in a section to force the water through some kind of media, but I don't know if I really need that or not. Would just throwing it in the pump section or first section be good enough? I was thinking mostly just for phosban or similar. But then, I was thinking I might just buy a phosban reactor. Maybe I'll try to talk my parents in the US intoo sending me that for my birthday because I don't want to pay $90 shipping on a $50 reactor and $100 of phosban.

    It's a sad day

You need to train him better, Never touch the fish unless it's an emergency.
  18. So, they were making breaded caviar? Wow, cool,I didn't know they went to so much trouble for preperation. Though, I'd much rather have mine spend their time breeding. Sorry, bad spelling is really getting on my nerves today.

    Sump

How's this look for a sump for my new tank? Obviously it's an odd size so I'd have to get it made for me. It's 1100X400X400 compared to 1220X480X380 about that an average 4 foot tank is. By my calculations the tank would be 175 liters, but with the partitions this way would only hold about 135 ,so there's either space for 40 extra liters if there's a power outage or 40 liters I should take advantage of more? Everything should be about to scale and in the right spot. Anyone see any obvious problems or any suggestions? Obviously the center section is intended to be a big refugium and the HOB skimmer can move around a bit. I'm wondering if I should cut it down to maybe 800mm wide to give me more room to put crap in the cabinet or not? Or if I should make it shorter so I could put a shelf above the sump for something like a top off container? Any thoughts?

    chlorine

You can also get chlorine test strips at spa and pool stores. Dunno if that would be accurate for whatever you want though?
  21. Note that boiling it in cold water won't work...

    Culling

You mayhave to worry about that with goldfish, but not with tropicals. They're dead LONG before anything starts freezing. Their metabolism just slows down and then stops.

    Red devil cichlid

That's why I tend to prefer the bigger fish. Like severum sized, not oscar and other 12"+ ones. Seems the bigger you get, the more personality you get. But with their size you can also fit some variety. Best of both worlds.

    Vallisneria?

No, they'll just fine YOU if you don't clean your tanks.
