  1. You folks need a room?
  2. This is correct, you can buy commercially available lamps with a reflective section inside the tube for just this reason. ref: Philips master TL-D Reflex. They are typically used in reflectorless light fitting, pricey tho
  3. Well that went well, It would appear the weeknight timing is what is required, best turnout in ages :bounce: Registered a whole bunch (13) breedings and gearing up to have Waikato dominate the National Fish Show next year! I can think of at least 6 sections we can be competitive in if not take out if the quality of the parents of these breedings are anything to judge by. Next Month is at Shannons and Richards, I'm looking forward to picking up my new blue rams from them if they are big enough. Owen
  4. Hi all We are meeting at my place tonight at 7.00pm. 7 Forth Crescent Glenview Hamilton Ph 07 843 2227 See you there. Owen
  5. Keep trying, I find the baby ones hard to impale also, much more sporting than the big males who hang out in caves just waiting to be speared.
  6. I'm sure some one in the WAS can help you out Mark, I will mention it in the next news letter. personally I'm not sure yet where I'm at but I'll do my best.

Just got my packages of powder in the post, Thanks Hans! But what is dosage rates and how do I use his mix?
  8. I too concur with Ilah and Mr Pleco they seem too small to breed especially if they are L018, I'd love to be proven wrong tho. I too suspect they may be different sp but as Mr Pleco has rightly pointed out, you have to take the photos on PC with a grain of salt, I have seen many pics which just dont seem to line up with what they are supposed to be. As to the hybridisation the jury is out, as long as they are passed on as Baryancistrus sp "gold nugget" I personally would happily buy for display purposes. My biggest concern with trying to find another of the same sp to swap with and try and breed would be that gold nuggets are notorious at fighting amongst them selves, if you split them the new couple might very well kill each other. I'd keep em together and see what happens as they grow out more.
  9. Thanks for the advice Duncan. I should probably pass really. Good to see you back, long time no hear.
  10. OOPs didnt think about the discus  not being a discus person
  11. You know what I would love to see, a prepared fish food which I can feed my BN fry which doesnt disolve and muck up my filters. It needs to be soft enough for them to eat quickly. I find zuchinni in the amounts I need to feed just makes a hell of a mess which results in me spending an hour each night cleaning filters.
  12. Its not "Cyber" as long as you are wearing pants
  13. They will be fine, 3-4 weeks, a little Barry White, a cold water change and you should be good to go. as for food Zucchini works well, pull it out before it goes soggy, oh and peas to keep em regular   :-?
  14. Sweet one bro, good luck with that, I hope you have a big tank for them :bounce:
  15. Keep trying you will have the odd flop. Here's a copy of some advice I gave to the Palmy people, for what its worth. VENUE IS SUPER IMPORTANT!!!!! The days of sitting in a dusty old hall sipping cold cups of tea are over, people want to be somewhere warm and comfortable. It should have something to stimulate conversation and spark interest, whether it is a display tank or a breeding setup to tie people together and allows people to chip in their ideas and experiences. ORGANISATION IS VITAL People will be traveling and are on the whole very busy, the biggest turn off is to show up somewhere only to find the plan has changed or you forgot something important. Plan well ahead of time, allow people time to book in, you will have to chase them up and make sure that they are very aware of dates and times, never just show up and play it by ear, it will turn to custard very fast as people try and push their own point of view. If you have been chosen to lead then lead. You will know very quickly if you have chosen incorrectly just by watching peoples reactions, learn from it and make it better next time. SHARING IS KEY Give away live food cultures, batches of fry for people to grow out, plants whatever. If you do this you will start to get some fantastic community feeling, offer any gear to club members first if you can. I would suggest that you set a rule, If something is given freely it can only be passed on freely not sold. If you get given some fry to grow out, the next generation is fair game but if you intend to sell something that is given to you it is only fair that you check with the giver first. I hope this helps, and I wish you well :bounce: If you want to do a road trip or a joint visit...maybe a molly hunt?? let us know. 16. That will be the hardest part, to decide on what it is that you want to do. This is something I have spent some considerable time trying to figure out in the past year so to kick you off here's what I have learnt to date, this applies to the Waikato club so I would guess it would be pretty close for you guys: VENUE IS SUPER IMPORTANT!!!!! Both Shannon and I have breeding setups and I have MTS so it should stimulate some discussion. PM me your details and I'll make sure you get the newsletter. Owen
  19. Second batch free swimming yesterday, I have saved approx 30 fry to date. 1st batch seem to be doing well now at 2cm+.
  20. Hmm we shall see how well my entries went 8)
  21. As you may or may not know The Waikato Aquarium Society's AGM is on Sunday. I am inviting everyone who is even remotely interested to come along, I want your input on how the club operates over the next year. I am known to be outspoken and an advocate for change, if you are too shy to say it in your own words PM me I'll say it for you and make sure the issue is addressed. There are a lot of people in our area who for what ever reason don't get involved in the WAS and I want to know what those reasons are. I am determined that the 2009 year will be well organised and fun for everyone and if it requires a major water change then lets do it. See you Sunday Owen
  22. As there are some tigers on the PT&E for a pretty good price I thought I'd see how they would go in my 5' tank. Currently have: 1x Gold Severum 1x Uaru 1x Ornate Polypterus 1x Geo Altifons 1x Satanoperca Some Pleco's of various types and some Kribs I chucked in as feeders which my Ornate seems uninterested in Good sized tank 1500x600x600, running 2 canister filters They are all to big to be eaten, just not too sure on the aggression and I want to make sure my Ornate still gets his share of food.
  23. Made it to the 30 day mark :bounce: Minimal losses and they appear to have put on a growth spurt in the last week. Size = 18ish mm nose to tail. Male has eggs in his cave again
  24. The redness on my Male (behind the head) comes and goes.
  25. Some GBA's get a red/pinkish patch behind the head (I think its a pigmentation thing) but never the nose.. Cant help more than that sorry.
