  1. I actually thinks its more to do with the rubbish weather. I was thinking tho Wok...Billaney must have run out of easy to breed fish by now, I might try and give him some competition this year. :bounce: Btw where's my clubs certificates Wok!, I need to keep my peeps motivated.
  2. Oh and I recently heard that there is a guy breeding senegals in NZ, apparently he's got so many he uses them as feeders
  3. No way! look at his avatar, you could never trust him, best I take it off your hands and see how he plays with my ornate, he/shes too lazy to get in a fight.
  4. have you got them yet or are you still researching?
  5. I wasn't even trying! they were fattening up for an attempt  I was too slow to rescue many but a patch of Java moss had a half a dozen, hopefully they are fertile! But the good news is that I have some breeders! Now I just need to convince my Sterbais to get jiggy
  6. Yeah Its so dam hard to ID these guys, if they havent been described, one may come from above a waterfall and one below! stuffed if I know, but hes purty and unusal thats good enuf for me I guess. Cheers Owen
  7. I've seen similar on my BN several times, It gradually got worse and red and sore looking, I treated successfully with furan 2 in a hospital tank. Keep an eye on it. Good luck bro
  8. Aha! I knew it was a Pseudancistrus! Actually Are you sure? all the L67's I can find pics of have round spots I see you are a registered owner of L67 on PC
  9. Looks like there may be a few available then..great! lets all keep our eyes open for potential females and keep this fish circulating. i have posted on PC and plecofanatics for an ID...fingers crossed.
  10. Other one? i didnt see that one! they did just put in a gold seam while i was there. As for cost.. not too bad $170. Im super sure its a mature male I'd love to find a female and try breeding them.
  11. It was ordered and supplied as a flat head gold nugget. on my request they questioned the wholesaler his reply was at first. What colour are its markings? Gold does it have a flat head? Yes Its a flat head gold nugget then. Duh! when pushed he said it was hoploancistrus tricornis its not

    Gourami eggs

Yeah thats my experience also, but every fish is different and I haven't delt with Anabantoids very much. I tried spawning them out of curiosity really.

    Gourami eggs

Thanks for the reply. There are a heap of fungused ones this morning and the male appears to have lost interest. I did some research on teh net last night and found an article. Credit To Brian Cole, M.S., Clyde S. Tamaru, Ph.D., Richard Bailey, B.A. Sea Grant Extension Service/Aquaculture Development Program School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology Christopher Brown, Ph.D. Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology April 1999 In addition females have also been observed releasing large numbers of unfertilized eggs. Rather than representing a conditioned of heightened spawning readiness, spontaneous egg release is more likely a method of rapidly eliminating over ripened eggs from the ovaries (Pollak et al. 1978). This can be associated with large numbers of oil droplets on the waters surface. This may be the case in my instance as there were a reasonable amount of oil droplets apparent on the surface. This is an old pair I have had for a long time and this is the first time they have spawned for me (they were in a very active community tank). Maybe the old girl needed a clean out before she produces properly. I will condition them again and see how I get on next time.
  16. Hi all, my pearls bred, it was pretty cool to watch for the first time. Question is, what colour are fertile eggs? there are hundreds of eggs, 24 hrs old most are whitish, some are fungused but most arent yet. Shouldnt they be black or yellow/orange? Maybe daddys shooting blanks
  17. Yes they do, in fact I have read that if given a choice females will breed with a fanning male in preference to a male with no eggs.
  18. Kool! I want one, my Bichir is a terrible hunter (too fat and lazy) I now have established populations of both guppies and kribs in my 5', I put them in as feeders  I need some population control.
  19. Hi All Just a reminder We are meeting at Shannon & Richards- 48 Crosbie Rd Hamilton (by Porritt Stadium) 7.00pm See you there
  20. Sigorney Weaver visit you lately? Dam that's a real shame I love those Plecs
  21. I found that running the tubing through an interceptor ( a second smaller bottle with a long "in" tube down to the bottom of the bottle and an "out" tube which is short) stopped the gloop from coming through. HTH Owen
  22. Thanks for the advice one and all. The baby discus are not totally teeny but I will be growing them out in a bare bottom until I get my plants established. I run a eheim classic canister filter on this tank currently, the UV is mainly there because I had green water issues for a while and I like the idea of killing pathogens off. does anyone have any idea if the compact fluro's colour 840 would be contributing to the algae? or is that just the by product of having such a high light density. As a result of this discussion. I am going to increase Heavy root feeders such as swords and crypts to ensure nutrient leaching from daltons is minamised. And stick with ambulia and water wisteria as water column feeders to extract the PO4 from the water. Start up DIY CO2 and see how that works. Cheers Owen
  23. After a frustrating time with battling green spot and green beard algae, I have cut back and ripped out most of my plants and have removed 99% of my fish from my planted tank. (3' standard size) In preparation for the arrival of 3 baby Discus its my last ditch attempt at a planted tank. I have left my substrate in along with the only plants which really seemed to do well, and weren't so covered with Green beard that I can still stand them. Base is Daltons topped with sand and a thin layer of bright water. Remaining plants Dwarf Sword of some kind 8'' max height Crypt Wendttii sp? Some Mystery Crpt with thin leaves Trimmed Ambulia and water wisteria back to base's and ripped up all my dwarf sag which while it was growing great looks awful when covered in algae. Lighting consists of 2x 3' plant tubes running 12 hrs and 2x 24W compact fluorescents 840 colour running 9 hrs. So I have plenty of light (not convinced if the CFL's are contributing to my algae isses or not but green beard was worse under the CFL's). I am in the Waikato so hence high Phosphates. I have PMDD (Thanks Hans ) and will dose with Excell or once that runs out DIY CO2 until I can afford a pressurised system (which will be never at the rate I spend money on my fish). So heres my plan please help with advice. Add JBL Balls Start again with replanting the dwarf Sag and encourage existing bigger plants to grow lush. Add only a few fish until I get good growth then slowly stock up to full How do I get massive growth for my regenerating aquatic garden without the Algae? Not concerned about the fish too much at the start as I'll use sacrificial Guppies in case of high nitrates/poisoning etc. Do I use my UV steriliser as I have heard conflicting reports on using them on planted tanks. Thanks Owen
  24. I need a little private time now dam I want those rays!
