    help needed

Sorry but this was not obvious to me... :-? I just point out that, from the perspective of a recent newcomer to this forum and fish keeping, if I was to do what you both are suggesting each time i see something red hanging from the anus of a fish then most of my fish would be dead or i would have given up because of the cost and time treating the tanks. You may know that 'steve' has been around long enough but i have never seen anything he has posted before nor have any idea that his name is steve. I am grateful for the help and info i have received on this forum and am aware of just how easy it is to panic when one is new to this game...

    help needed

I think that may have been a bit over reactive..... if i was to do the same thing everytime I saw a red thing hanging from a fish then almost all of them would be dead by now!! Or i would have needed to treat the whole tank load with prazi several times over. What i have learnt from advice on this forum is to wait and observe.... often what i see as a problem actually is just a normal process.

    dwarf gourami

Lots of plants... I suspect you may be right although he could hold his own. He died last night. 4 days of sitting on the back of the filter. I havent found gourami an easy fish to keep...

    dwarf gourami

Thanks caryl Could be dropsy....hard to see him from above. The only larger fish is another male gourami. They have been having mating battles over the past month as each has built and defended his nest. Tried the peas but he wasnt having any of it!!!! I will see what is happening tomorrow. He is still agile (have only tried once as the effort seems to wear him out) enough to evade capture.

    dwarf gourami

My smaller 'red flame' (?) male dwarf gourami started swelling up on Xmas evening. Has had trouble swimming upright and has taken to remaining on the top of the internal filter. His colour is fading. Did water change Xmas morning but havent wanted to disturb him today....any ideas?
  6. i wondered....thanks
  7. Has anyone kept angels and yellows together. I have three small (3cm) yellows in a tank with 5 angels, a pair of kribs and other barbs and corys. One of the yellows has taken to nipping the tail of the angels and i have noticed that at times all the yellows are herding the angels into a corner and harassing them...
  8. my little yellow (3cms) has just begun terrorising the community tank....so much for a peaceful cichlid lol
  9. Thanks for the help.... I have been doing changes every couple of days and still finding little balls of white mould floating around on the gravel....I think they are dead fry. At least they are getting fewer. The big fish are now swimming around doing what guppies do  Have introduced 2 new males and now one has died a day later. The others are fine. The tests are all ok. I am wondering whether there is a dead fish which has got buried in the gravel during the changes..... I will continue with the changes for now and have continued the oxygen
  10. I have a just the place where it could go henward.....until you get some space
  11. I know that there are diseases like TB which can be passed from fish to human. What about the more common diseases? Should we be taking any precautions when working with our fish, especially sick ones?
  12. they sell them at animates as submersible
  13. Likewise....if you can get them to Picton then i may be able to get them down....just fancy a drive
  14. I have added oxygen for the last 5 days and still finding dead fish....
  15. My heater in the guppy tank died last week and i now have about three of the fish dying every day and the rest hovering around the surface. The heater was only off for 24 hours and the tank isnt that large and the water levels are as they should be. I have heard that guppies are quite sensitive to changes and go into a sort of shock..... even the fry are reducing.
  16. There are 1000s of oaks in hagley park and all over the city!!!
  17. Your pond has such an amazing water feature....so life like
  18. I keep to flame males and 4 females in my community tank...they all get on, sort of... the males seemed much more confrontative without the females around... The females are quite amazing fish really and really worth having. I have had to remove the 'golden algae eaters' and one black platy because they harassed the gouramis endlessly. Seemed to constantly trying to nip at their bodies...Now it is all quite again

    New tank

I have three tanks already running.... the fish in one of them need to be transferred to the big one... i guess i can begin by transferring the smaller ones over and let the tank run through it's cycle. My understanding is that this goes quicker with filter media taken from the already established tank? Thanks for your help...
  20. I have just set up my new 160lt... It will have an eheim filter appropriate to the size which has new filters.... If I put the small Fluval filter into the tank as well will the bacteria cross over? and can I add the fish from the small tank immediately? The fish are all quite small and young... 2 kribs 1angel 5 rosy barbs 5 golden barbs 1 cory 3 platys
  21. I think it is in preparation at this point.... It is attached to plants and floating bits of moss however in the past these have flowed free as the water level decreased or rose. maybe i should do a small one each day rather than a large one weekly!
  22. How does one do a water change when there is a bubble nest in the tank?
  23. The second time I used the vac I swallowed my small dwarf gourami who was very keen on checking out the vac. He was ok but got stuck in the valve... Also one of my small bottom cleaners has just disappeared. Either buried or sucked out... It also pays to have more than one bucket at the ready as they can fill quite quickly...
