Yep ...Ive had at least 4 with the same or similar red marks but they haven't died that quickly... its taken several weeks and they seem to die of other things but the red marks are the first sign that something is up. My last two have now developed small red marks and, well, i guess i am not going to have gouramis at all soon.

Thanks caper I would normally associate 'flashing' as when fish raise their fins when they meet or confront other fish ie fighters and ciclhids. ....thats my understanding of the term. What you are describing seems to be a symptom of many things if other threads on this forum indicate anything. Good luck trying to work out what is happening....this has been a common symptom in my tanks as well. Once you have worked it out then even more luck to you in working out how to treat it, with what and where to get it from!!! I wish you more success with this than i have had. Cheers

Can you explain what you mean by 'flashing'? Do you mean the flashing or raising of their fins? Or do you mean flinging themselves against the plants and rocks?

In my limited experience dwarf gouramis are not easy fish to keep. I was sold them as beginners fish and had 7 0f them, now down to two. Mine have never attacked other fish other than when building their his first nest and i wonder whether the size of your tank may be too small or the set up may not provide enough territories.

UVs are amazing....clears the tank in a couple of days. Fish seem happier as well.

All this is incredibly confusing guys.... does anyone have the time or patience to write this all out clearly once and for all!! Also what would be incredibly helpful is a list of vets in NZ who know something about fish and their diseases and who stock the meds. So far I havent even been able to find levisomole (sp ?) down here....

One of the local lfs has driftwood with plants attached with black brush algae growing on it for sale @ $30 each. Luckily the staff were a bit helpful about what the black stuff was and how invasive it can become. I was tempted as it looked amazing...

Went to net the fish which was sitting in the middle of an open space in the tank. The other females and male were no where to be seen when suddenly when I almost had her in the net the male came rushing past and pushed her to a corner behind plants and curled his body right around her. All the other females then appeared and did the same thing.... I went back 10 mins later and they were all still there and flaring their fins....scary.... Oh well i guess i can wait till morning and see what happens then.

It has popeye. Was in one eye yesterday and now spreading to the other. The other females are now chasing it and it is sitting on the bottom with occasional dashes to the top for air. I have suspected that all of the dwarf gouramis have had some sort of internal parasite but getting clear info on these has been difficult and then getting meds has been next to impossible. I have a call in to a vet (wont be returned until Monday now) for worming tabs but it is too far down the track for this one!! I have had no end of trouble with these fish...so much for being an 'easy' species for a beginner!!

The big island of Savaii is/was amazing! Much friendlier and more laid back than Upolo.

I wasnt going to put into the freezer.... not my cup of tea there! I had read on a UK forum that placing the fish into near frozen water creates such a drastic temperature change that it causes shock and then death in small fish.

I have a dwarf gourami which needs to be euthanased. Am leaning towards the frozen water method....anyone have any 'better' suggestions pl?

I was given some on Waiheke when I lived there in the 80s. Didnt know it was banned then. It is probably still there in some ponds. It is a great plant and looks awesome when flowering...

Can aviverm be used to treat all types of worms in fish or only cammalanus? The metro was going to cost a huge amount to treat a 140 litre when calculated by the vet i called and she wanted to do a postmortum or at least see the fish concerned before giving it. How often should fish be treated for worms? Cats and dogs are treated regularly. Is it the same for fish?
