if i ever would come to any fish meeting i would prolly be the youngest person there And what do you do at them anyway? what do you talk about what do you do? -
yea i know that feeling.. always get it when setup a new tank or get new fish =) just lay there on bed and watch and watch them for hours... congrats to you

i use baking soda to definately rise the PH not lower it in my cichlid tank. my ph is about 8-8.5 , half a spoon for a 34 liter community fish is way way too much.i put 2 teaspoons for 200 liters. dont put any baking soda in there at all. just get that PH down stuff

yea but where do i contact people to visit their fish house... and how do i know people that have one..
-
i am kind of looking around and about for a nice fantail. saw some on new zealand auction website but the person was only selling the tank not the fish. but man those were nice, loooong aaaaas fins and tails.. so nice.. wouldnt mind some of those.. but anywhere i look i havnt seen ones like those yet.. Veiltails dont have tails like that either..

my nano is very small but i think i mite buy a aqua one two bulb light maybe.. its only about 30cm lond its tiny i tell you a real nano lol Oh i saw some nice guppies in HFF yesterday and i cant remember wehat they called but i want some now they were bright yellow and a bit pink and something else i think and they were smaller than usual i think.. so thats what gona go into the tank..
-
wow thats cheap.. i think i mite buy that because im kind of sick of carrying all these 20 liter buckets back and forwards... gets to my lower back and im only little and not very strong.. will make it earier on al tanks im guessing than..cool =)) Im getting so excited about starting a discus tank ive wanted one wor quite awhile and now finaly have room and nerve to do it
-
thats what i do at the moment, carry heavy buckets from bathroom to my bedroom where the tanks are kinda heavy for me im only little. dimebag how about just adding a bit of hot water into the water you use and measure the tem so tis same as in the tank would that work you think? and how expensive are those filters that you put on the tap? adodge how do those pumps work?
-
YEAH =)) oh that name of the plant , its like New Zealand in russian sounds the same, novaya zelaniya =))) thats so cool. yea do you think java moss will settle down better?
-
WOW that now really SO inspired me to keep my idea of discus keeping very very very nice! i wish i could get a 450 liter tank!!!!! maybe later ! but for now will have to stick what ive got.. but man thats nice..

ive just read a massive article on discus keeping and the guy there says that he talked to a couple discus keepere/breeders and it sed in the article that its best to get not small not big fish but about 3-4" in size.. aparently they adapt to water conditions better? and yea i know about water changes,, unfortunately cant get a 300liter now so will have to start with what ive got.. for now ... otherwise of course i would ge tthe biggest tank i could and as many as i could only afford.. Also now as ive read heaps about them ive changed my mind about planting the bottom, i think i mite just go for minimum substrate so its easier to keep the water clean... also it said there about keeping water in container at least for 24 hours befor i put it in the tank to get rid of chlorine.. wel its kinda the same with al other fish BUT what if i use that stuff Water ager that gets rid of chlorine instantly? i use it in my cichlid tanks and it works for them, will it work for discus too or i still have to leave the water for 24 hours? id just make the water warm straight away so no need to put heater in there for 24 hours either.. as that guy sed.. doesnt he know about water ager?.. Yea some people say they like extremely hard to keep, others say they fine.. so confusing when you are a beginer...

oh.. so for a planted tank a co2 is pretty much necessary? i was at the shop today and they had a planted tank and obviously a co2 in it but like 0 water flow.. how does fish survive in tehre than with not enough oxygen.. youd have to change the water very often to refreshen it and boost it with oxygen?...
-
hows Co2 differ from airpump? both put bubbles into the water prolly a stupid question but i never can get it rite..
-
do we have a fish house in NZ? would be cool to have a look... they should build like a real cool fish place with massive beautiful tanks atht are actually maintained properly not like kelly tartons (spelling).. i realy dont like that place.. the tanks always look dirty and the fish are dull .... and the tank layouts obviously have been put in without thinking..
-
i remember ages ago i had a driftwood in my tank it didnt make the water brown.. oh well.. im sure the filter will deal with it.. oh il have a look hopefull ythat ph keeping stuff is not too expensive,as i know il have to spend quite alot on keeping these fish..

Hello everyone,so here it goes, after keeping fish for years and keeping cichlids for a while,i decided to try out a discus tank.. stil trying to find budget and get brave which will take a bit of time and also waiting for the tank and everything so i can set it up so until then i have some questions that i want to figure out ... I want it to be a planted tank, it wil be about 100 -120 liters to start with.. i know thats not much for discus but i wil get small ones so if i will get the hang of keeping them i will upgrade as they will grow and need more space. but for now.. what really inspired me is i was watching that program about amazon and its fish and they showed some discus and i always wanted to try out a planted tank. I did some research and still have got alot more of reasearch to do before i can buy my fish. so here are the questions : 1. what plants do i need to be in there? i know amazonian sword plant i will go for that one, but also i want to not be able to see the bottom of the tank and gravel so i want a plant carpet, what plants are good for that? 2. What does drift wood do to the water conditions? 3. How do i keep the Ph down for fish and i know they like acidic water, how to i acomplish that? And just in general, when i read other forums and just info in general everyone says that discus are so hard to keep but then some other people say they not that hard to keep after al.. its challenging and interesting to try but i want to succeed so need heaps of help... so any help would be muchly apreciated!! :bounce:

im doing a 13 liter planted tank i went to the pet shop just before and i saw some REAAAAl colourful guppies there i cant remember what they were called they were like 10 dollars each,so ive changed my mind about cold water planted and decided to go for tropical!.. hey whats that on your gravel growing in the first pic you posted.. im looking for something to cover the bottom of the tank.. thought of java moss but that what you had looked nice what was it? those nano planted tanks are like a tiny piece of art mine is geting delayed a bit as i dont have much muny now still gota keep my 2 other tanks going.
-
haha i have exactly the same thing in my house, xcept everyone knows that ive got fish and always come into my room to have a look than sit by the tank and say nice things about it
-
wow your gourami is just like helen at HFF
-
looking at fish like that i can tell that id be too scared to put my hand in the tank for cleaning they dont have smiling friendly faces thats for sure
-
well yea.. i just was on planted tank and they have tanks that are like 5 liters! like 2.5 gallon and 1.5 gallon tahts crazy! but its like a small piece of art really. ive got some val that i put in there the val was from the pond. wana put some java moss in there maybe. there are micro filters believe it or not =) suitable up to 15 liters! they tiny and should do the job.. yea the temperature would be a problem anyway even if i would have a heater in there. its still have to keep up. i remember i had a 10 liter tank and some guppies in there. they didnt care at all what temperature it was and i only changed water once a week. but all water of course.havnt even had a pump in there. only a couple plants. they were happy still were breeding thats why had to upgrade eventually. but was pretty cool. So yeah.. unless i will find a place where i can get like a realy small filter.. i dont know like 20W or 10W
