How did your tanks stand up in the quake? Hope you've come through ok... I've lost everything except for clowns, orchid dottyback, coral banded shrimp and brittle star.

Great photos!! So beautiful... my family has a holiday house at Arthur's Pass - it's off the main road and right opposite the Devil's Punchbowl waterfall, so spectacular views whatever the season and weather.

Sounds nice - I love B & W clowns (who doesn't?!). Also like your idea of chromis - they look great in groups (how many do you have to have to call it a school?!) I have one clown in my RSM and when I first got it it spent each night swimming right at the top of the tank in the back corner and would spend the day near a xenia until it found the anemone...... Then it spent nearly all it's time near it or in it and sleeps in it - the first night it slept in it I came out to look and it was so still I ended up poking it to make sure it was alive :oops: It looks much more "asleep" inthe aemone than it did when it was at the top of the tank. It will also defend the anemone from the CBB and the flame angel and will attempt to dig it out if it tries to retract under the substrate. Last week for the first time I saw it grab a piece of mussel that was meant for the star fish and took it right to the anemone and fed it. Anyway - although clowns are common etc and everyone says "Nemo" when they see one I think they are very entertaining and interactive and certianly worthwhile keeping. Hope all goes well with your tank!

For us it was John at Organism - I used to go in to look at the carnivorous plants and then happened to look at the marine selection - I was fascinated by the flame angel, coral banded shrimp and clam (the ones that ended up in cONCH's tank!!)It was at the time the RSM was just coming in and after a few visits and some discussion between ourselves and John we decided to give it a go. So glad we did!

I love that pink stylophora - I have a big blank spot in my tank waiting for one of those!!

Unfortunately it went to the big reef in the sky - I did cut away as much damaged tissue as possible and bathed in iodine solution but it was too late - too far gone I think. I have learned my lesson re alkalinity and found this article really helpful: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/nov2002/chem.htm I also have replaced the hammer with a torch which is doing well.

Just so long as you don't have coral banded shrimp or something else that will eat them!! I still haven't managed to get any new generations!!

Welcome - some nice pics! Pity to hear about the angel though..... I (well me and my partner) have a RSM reef tank - still a long way to go until I'm happy with it, but one day at a time! Love it though!

I have found this article really helpful....... http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/nov2002/chem.htm We have a RSM and have like cONCH found the test with the tank very vague. I have increased alkalinity to 3.5 meq/L + and found definite improvement with corals such as hydnophora etc.

Thanks Wasp! Still a long way to go with the tank but slowly does it - there've been a few more additions since that video too! Yes it is a H Malu - I really like it. It seems happy enough.... the first night we had it it climbed off the rock it was on and placed itself where it is now - hasn't moved since! Wasn't quite where I wanted it but at least it isn't wandering around causing trouble. I was a bit concerned when the clown found it as it's only small at the moment but it seems ok.

Yes - Mine goes straight for my ring every time I put my hand in the tank....

Mine now hosts a H malu, but for a while it was tossing up between a xenia and a trachyphilia - the anemone was always there it just took a while to decide to host it..... As I understand it it's not a species typically used but was purchased before I decided to get the clown.

As everyone else has said: Organism :bounce: :bounce: Redwood no longer have their coral tank and are apparently not continuing with it.
