  1. nope, had no idea why, i caught heaps with eggs already attached to them. but they disappear, then they get new clusters, then they disappear also. im assuming they are tiny and get sucked through the pump into the main tank where they get devoured... but they DEFINATELY got new clusters after they went in my tank. not brackish if thats what you are wondering. but no new shrimps either, no need to feed, pickes out the little bits of stuff in the water
  2. had heaps in a sump tank for live food  very high in protein, and low in fat. caught in a little creek across the shore
  3. yeah, like whetu said, often u can find good working or near new parts at a fraction of the price. I also prefer to pieces together, because as things change, i like 2 b flexible, more lights if i want a plant tank, or more filtration if i want a monster fish tank. I also find that canisters and sumps provides far more media and overall flow than hood mounted filters.
  4. i know what it is, was just saying, even if it split in half, super glue would be able to keep it together for a little bit. (done that my self, except i used the stuff that people patch roofs with).
  5. what part of it is broken? Unless u smashed it up good, you should be able 2 patch it up temporarily. Maybe someone close to you can lend you a spare filter. Good luck!
  6. fine, so not discus... Angelfish, Dwarf Cichlids, Tetras, Hatchetfish, Corydoras, Farlowella, Loricarids... get some fancy plecs, always nice to look at. so you might want to keep those angels that came with the tank.
  7. lol, after reading this entire post, i think discus...
  8. hrm, dont know what to do, but im definately going to visit this wildlife sanctuary mark and his wife created. simply out of respect and being a fellow animal lover. i hope things work out, who knows, maybe some nice chap will purchase it and ask you to keep on running it... :-?
  9. right now the tank is fine, as stated above, i mean ive seen fish kept in way worse conditions (eg. Most gold fish/betta in tiny bowl without filter setups). Having said that, the set up is fine, but not ideal. There are plenty of alternatives, keep bn instead of goldspots. Skunk (nasty beasties) loaches or cories instead of clowns. Etc etc.
  10. hey fishkeepers. Im a 2nd yr bcom student at auckland uni. Most my mates think im a nut job wasting money on fish. So far ive only met one other guy who keeps fish thats from uni. Im sure theres more of you out there that share the same hobby of fish keeping. If you guys r keen, we can start our own little club, 2 share ideas, help each other out, or just chat. What do you guys think?
  11. its looking good so far, both eating good and no sign of aggression at all. only time will tell...
  12. ehhh, sump time then? mind you, the big aro is the most placid thing, the 15cm gg bullies it
  13. today, my awesome girlfriend decided to buy me an arowana (named tinkerbell). imagine my surprise as i saw her outside my door. now, the problem is that i already have a 35cm silver. if you keep these monster fish, you would know these are aggressive towards each other... especially the little one is about 10cm... what should i do? take the risk??
  14. oh, and they only guarantee live arrival, death in Q... well you just lost a couple grand. i think some companys do pet insurance, might wanna look into that eh..
  15. if you got $4k-$6- ready, pm me and ill hook you up with a guy who can import you a blue base xback gold. i was saving up for one till i realised i need a car more than fish.
  16. auckland is alright, well in central city at least. a bit windy and a few trees blown over at most. people still going to work and school as usual. there isnt much flooding either... maybe we have effective drainage systems here on the roads.
  17. Q: do you sleep on your stomach? no? A: can i? Q: how much does a polar bear weigh? A: enough to break the ice Q: how much does a baby weigh? A: lets find out! ummm, grab her hand, and trace your finger across her knuckles, and then the back of her wrist, tell her its a river. now tell her that a rabbit wants to get to the other side which is a carrot field. but theres no bridge and the rabbit cannot swim. (now see what ridiculus ideas she comes up with) when she finally gives up, and ask you for the answer. shrug and say "i dont know, i just wanted to hold your hand"
  18. 2 x big hoplo 1 x choclate talking cat 1 x pictus and wishing i could get red tail, gulper, and shovel noses...
  19. *dig dig dig* *turn turn turn*
  20. hahaha, i now have 6 dats (would trade for widebar) looking for a nice clown knife, which i will be keeping in a swordtail tank, to promote its growth. i dont want a big one... about 15cmish, would actually want a couple dots this time, my last one had 5 dots all together... SOOOO, ill probably sell my pink tail chalceus, or the gg, or both. depending on my financial situation. pm me with offers if your interested. will post in trade/exchange section when ive made up my mind (after i find a nice clown). and davidr, if you want that tatty clown loach i have, pick it up anytime, also added a 2400lph filter to my tank ^^, can never have too much filtration!
  21. today, i saw a red tail giant gourami in a 200l-ish tank with a couple of clown loaches. and was told tanks were maintained every month or so... so i decided to save it and now its in my giant tank... it seems to be pushing my arowana and pint tail chalceus around. is that of concern? its currently about 12cm and the aro 30cm, pink tail about 25cm. and for those of you who dont know what it is, its HELEN fish from hff mt roskill.
  22. just keep an eye out for the plec and your sen, might gain the habit of sucking the slime coat off the sen. show some pics!!
  23. isnt bioballs better than pumice??
  24. if i float bioballs in my sump (i have a wet-dry trickle tower), can i replace the pumice with the bioballs all in one go after say, a week? would enough bacteria grow on the bioball? thanks
