  1. Hehe we were waiting for anybody to fall in! Good times
  2. Is it on the nana or the other type? My tall random anubias and the nana get brown patches which turn into holes eventually. No such problem with the afzeli yet, would also be keen to find out what causes this
  3. Eels are neat! They can get quite tame. The wild kribs look very nice, there were some on here for sale recently I think. You will have to post pics when its running
  4. Lol no, he is not into fish at all. Asked him this afternoon and turns out he is going up north that weekend
  5. I think a lake is fed by a stream, and a pond is free standing. Could be wrong tho sounds impressive whatever you call it!
  6. I can ask my brother to bring it over, he may want some beers in return tho
  7. There is a little aggression between the kribs but leafy ignores them. I have crypts and moss and java fern quite low in the tank so the kribs hide out down there. For your tank size I would stick to one pair of kribs, they can rule a tank when breeding. I cant comment on the synos growth rate as I got them at the size they are now, but judging from their appetite I would say you could end up with a fatty pretty soon. Perhaps an 'upside down catfish' would be a better syno species than a featherfin?
  8. I have mine in a 650l planted tank and would say definitely have lotsa plants, they really appreciate nooks and crannies to lurk in. My boys tankmates are 4 kribensis, a featherfin syno, a 'leopard' syno, 16 black ruby barbs, a pantadon butterfly and 5 bristlenoses. The ctenopoma chases the barbs if they annoy him but otherwise there are no issues. Other good tankmates are the congo tetra, lamp eye tetra, or the african suckermouth catfish. Make sure they're too big to be lunch though
  9. The background will look much better if you use an oily substance to attach it (ky works well) and smooth out bubbles with a ruler or credit card
  10. Wont the sand just get sucked up?
  11. Aah yes there is driftwood and one piece is still floaty. I attached lots of plants to it yesterday so reeeeally dont want to take it out lol. Would it be harming the fish?
  12. I dont know whats going on, my 650l tank has started to smell. Originally it had a slight ammonia smell to it, so tested the water... Ammonia and nitrite 0, nitrate 10ppm, pH 7. Did a partial water change anyway and now its about a week later and the smell is starting to resemble sulphur. Filtration is an open top 3ft sump, the sand bed is maybe 1.5 inches deep and I have trumpet snails to turn it. I cant see any black areas and have not seen bubbles rising. My bristlenoses have been digging however. The tank has been set up for a month or so but everything was moved in straight from the old tank, sump included. What could it be?
  13. I would be concerned about the guppies with both the danios and loaches
  14. Aah very good, I might get a white/blue and a white/red then I already have 3 planted nanos so was thinking either scrap them and plant just this one, or do something different all together. I like the idea of a single species tank
  15. Im undecided as to whether I want to plant it or not, can plants grow under blue light? The lights that come with it are 2x PL11w with 'tropical/sunlight'. Would one of these provide enough for decent plant growth (on one side of the tank at least)?
  16. Im getting an Aquastart 500 tank tonight from a friend, it presently has green gravel and plastic plants so once I get it home its getting a makeover! Ill be starting from scratch so would love opinions on substrate, decor and stocking. My budget however is next to nothing so will have to make do with what I can find or make. I have at the moment lying around: aquabasis, black silica, coffee grit gravel, glacier pebbles and daltons washed sand. Filtration will be a cf500
  17. Gently lift it out of the tank several times, usually the loach will come out with the water. Otherwise its just a waiting game
  18. Hi all, a reminder that the Bay Fish and Reptile Club is holding its AGM tonight at 7pm at Animal Antics on Hewletts Rd. Lots to discuss, should be an interesting evening. Hope to see all our members there!
  19. I would have thought that duckweed would slow the plants growth, competing for nutrients etc.
  20. Am wanting to collect rainwater for fishies and myself, cant reroute the existing guttering so am planning to attach some to the carport. Plastic preferably, any condition, with or without brackets. Would prefer to trade or work as payment
