  1. Am looking at making a humus toilet, have sourced everything except the cover material. Would love to trade or do some housework etc in exchange for some compost. Must have had at least a year to mature to be useful for this application
  2. Slightly off topic sorry... I read somewhere that goldfish should not be used as feeders because they contain an enzyme which is a vitamin d uptake inhibitor. Is there any truth to this?
  3. Feeding the babies is not cruel, however constantly breeding from the same female can be considered cruel as it puts a lot of stress on her. I would recommend having 2 girls and only allowing one to be pregnant at a time. That would of course mean keeping the male seperate.
  4. That is not the reason for asking dont worry
  5. For stores with common sump systems, how do you control disease? Are fish quarantined after arrival?
  6. Just wondering, when shops get fish from their suppliers do they quarantine them at all or put them straight out for sale? If so for what length of time?
  7. I have been trying to grow some cuttings from my stem plants but so far have only succeeded in producing loads of brown hairy algae. The plants are in a 40l poly box, substrate is jbl aquabasis with daltons washed sand and 'coffee grind' grit. They have diy co2. Lighting is 2 20w t8 tubes, both daylight, on for 8 hours a day. Is there something I am doing wrong? Plants are ambulia, green pine and babies tears
  8. A reminder that the meeting is on tonight, bring along your spare change and anything you wish to donate or sell. Nymox and LivingArt will be demonstrating how to plumb a tank for standpipes, and we will have special guest Yindi the Blue Tongued Skink.
  9. Awesome, looking forward to seeing you there Wok
  10. Stress coat, etc are pretty much instant, although I like to let mine sit for a couple of mins. You do not need to use any other method eg. Sun if you are using the correct dose rate.
  11. The fuzzy tip of the tail has fallen off but the remaining part has a clean wound. Can they regrow parts of their tail?
  12. Nice lotus Your flagtail looks amazing, great colour! Does it tend to fade or can it stay that bright?
  13. The water conditioner you can get from a pet store will be safe to use with axies as long as you use the recommended dose. Stress coat, prime and aquaplus all have conditioners which enhance the slime coat, which will be good for your axies skin
  14. Hi everyone, the next meeting of the Bay Fish and Reptile Club will be held on Thursday the 17th of March at 7pm. 282 Range Rd, Papamoa. Pm if you need directions This is the last meeting before our AGM so start thinking about who you would like to nominate for positions (you can nominate yourself!) Lots to talk about so hope to see lots of faces Also, bring along some change as there may be goodies for sale
  15. Easily 2, possibly a 3rd until they are larger
  16. Cheers, will give that a go. Might try some guppy fry too
  17. I have acquired a 10cm ish peacock eel with an injured tail. Looks like it might have been caught under a gravel syphon, as the wound is very straight. He is missing a good area of skin/scales, maybe the last 2-3cm of his tail. The tip had started to go fuzzy when I got him, the rest looks raw. I am treating him with melafix and giving him 50% water changes daily. Have had him for 48 hours now, offered him bloodworms but not interested. I do not know the last time he ate. When he arrived he was very lethargic, lying on one side and not moving when touched. He is still lying on one side but will look at me and will move away from fingers now. What more can I do? How long can they go without food? Would live food survive long enough with the treatment for him to find it?
  18. Chop up a flea collar and put it in the vacuum bag, helps to kill eggs that you suck up from the carpet
  19. UPDATE: Hi everyone can cheques for conference please be sent to the treasurer: Fiona Sytema 16A Balmoral Tce, Otumoetai, Tauranga. Thanks
  20. I am in the north island but if anyone needs any help I will do what I can, I can house fish and will be donating blood tomorrow. My thoughts are with everyone down there
  21. Very similar to tlc but targets the sludge more. Also removes smells I think
  22. Its nutrafin waste control. I used it when I was feeding meaty food to my bullies, it does help keep the sludge down. Unless you have an organic debris buildup you dont need it.
  23. As far as I know there are only apple snails and trumpet snails for tropical tanks. Apple snails grow large and will eat plants. Trumpet snails live in the substrate and mostly come out at night, they are small but breed quickly and dont eat plants.
