  1. I decided not to risk it, but definitely need something so will keep looking. I may have a working powerhead in the garage I can rig up as an internal.
  2. Only if its free lol no you have done enough for me but thanks!
  3. So probably not wise then... its a tetra whisper triad 3000. On closer inspection it doesnt leak so might give it a go as intended, not sure it will have the power needed to lift the water that high tho... a bit of diy required.
  4. I have an old hang on filter which I want to use for my turtles but I think it may leak. Is it safe to use it as an internal filter with the powerhead under the water?
  5. Yeah i had high hopes cos the other 2 got on straight away but at least we had another tank. I keep meaning to take pics but getting tied up with our Foster puppies lol will clear out her tank over the next 2 days and get pics then. Her shell isn't soft at all but has white patches.
  6. So Mrs new turtle thinks other turtles feet are tasty, she has been banished to the other tank which currently houses my plants. Turtles + soil substrate = brown tank! Gonna change it to bare bottom tonight, hopefully the plants don't get too minced between now and then.
  7. Just got her dropped off, her shell is definitely in need of attention and i think she is underweight but i have seen worse. With good food and sun I'm sure she will improve quickly. Will post pics later
  8. I haven't had fish shipped from there but i have had them package fish for an overnight journey, which is basically the same minus the courier. The fish were packaged well and stayed warm, i was pleased with the service.
  9. I currently have 2 female res, one about 20cm and one about 15cm, both about 5 yrs. They live in a tank 200 x 50 x 50cm, it is about half full. They get on very well. I have been offered a third female, approx 17cm and 10-12 yrs. She has bounced from home to home a bit and may have a shell issue, so i kinda want to 'save' her. Is there anything i need to do when i introduce them? Is it likely a third will ruin the harmony? We plan to build a pond come summer so they wont all be in the tank forever
  10. Try some of the vets? Or you could get Levamisole (Avi-Verm) from most pet stores. I've used Avi-Verm before successfully in the past, good luck.
  11. Cool thanks for that LA Gives me hope! lol. Is the tank of a similar volume or is it massive?
  12. I was thinking i will probably need something for water movement and airation, maybe an air pump or low wattage pump. That wont really dent the power bill. Inanga like a decent current tho? Have had bullies before and i love them but partner would like mid water swimmers
  13. I have a 180l tank currently housing my driftwood, crypts, anubias and ferns. It is cold and staying on average 15'C. I have inanga in the creek behind our house, and acorus rushes in my pond. I'm keen on the idea of plant only filtration, thus possibly not having to power the tank. Is this possible and realistic? Anyone else done it?
  14. I was a little concerned about the pink colouration on her backside, where the squishy bit meets the shell. She isn't for sale on trademe, I just used it to upload the photos. However if you are interested in her perhaps I could be persuaded to part with her. We have two females, sometimes the bigger one steps on her when she's 'sleeping' but doesn't seem to bother her otherwise. The pleco pushes both of them around now and then but they push back, seems they have their dynamic sorted pretty well but we always keep an eye on them.
  15. This is Shelley, she was in a dodgy pet store for several years without UV light, and when it closed down I made sure I got her. Her shell was white when I got her, that was about 18 months ago, she's come a long way! I have noticed some pinkish areas in her squishy bits, and she has been spending an unusual amount of time at the bottom of the tank. She will eat and climb on her log to bask, but is 'sleeping' more than usual. Her tankmates are a larger turtle and a big pleco (it's a big tank). They are behaving as usual. Does she look healthy? I realise her shell may not be tip top but I am working on that As I said she has improved a lot.
  16. Ouch! Its a horrible feeling, had similar happen to us recently with $1200 of stock lost, sounds like yours might be a bit worse very deflating but keep moving forward!
  17. Java fern gets nailed in all our tanks... Particularly the cichlids
  18. My cats were not trained to do anything and I got several of them as adults, the only one I've had from a kitten is the one who causes the trouble! They do not 'like' or 'enjoy' being inside any more than being outside, but they aren't locked in 24/7 either. Humans are the boss, not the cats, if you show them that a behaviour is acceptable they will continue to behave in that manner.
  19. There is money in cats, not so much the other animals. Think about what people spend on toys, beds, food, catteries, etc., ferret owners (typically) will not spend the same kind of money, there isn't an industry built around it. Kinda like trying to get rid of trout... I have 5 cats and 2 dogs, all our cats are desexed, fully vaccinated, wear collars with bells and my details and are kept in at night. I would consider this to be responsible, and I fully expect other cat owners to do this as a minimum. I don't find it acceptable for my own cats or any others to poop in my vege garden and have turned the hose on my own and my neighbours cats on several occasions. I found at one stage one of my cats was harassing a neighbours cat on their property, so I, the responsible cat owner, took steps to contain this cat further. I did not expect the neighbour to take steps to keep my cat off their property, as some of you seem to think is appropriate. If a neighbour is causing too much noise, we expect them to make less, we do not simply block our ears.
  20. The plants and growing media also form part of the biofilter :cr1:
  21. Animal antics in the Mt is worth a look
  22. Our largest male blue is... Bigger than an adult bristlenose so 15cm at a guess? The smallest maybe 10cm? I dont think blue phantoms are being imported anymore but yep we are hoping to get them breeding, once they go in the 8ft tank I imagine they will... Hopefully lol
