  1. We have 2 green phantoms and 3 blue phantoms in our 4 ft tank and they get on fine they are all a similar size and have heaps of driftwood and caves. They chase each other occasionally but no aggression. Hope that helps
  2. What part of auckland? Hobsonville obviously lol, where is that?
  3. I will have forms to sign up, yes you can bring your subs on the day. I dont have any breeding forms, presumably mike or fi should have those?
  4. Hi all, sorry for the late notice! The January meeting will be a bbq at natures place in the historic village. Next sunday the 22nd at 2.30-3pm We would love to see everyone there, new members welcome. It will be a fairly low key meeting and we will be discussing the direction of the club for 2012
  5. Agreed. Most pet shops but not all, there are a handful of ones which put animals wellbeing above profit. Too few tho. This 'breeder' is advising one of the new local pet stores, when I informed them that their turtles needed a uv bulb and had what looked like the start of shellrot they fobbed me off. Likewise with keeping axies on bite sized stones. Their response was 'well weve done it for ages and theyre fine, plus so and so says its ok and he used to own pet shops.' Apparently owning a pet store means you know stuff roflmfao.
  6. Being born in that environment may have something to do with it, also the ground would stay fairly warm in comparison to an exposed tank. Yours will also be getting natural direct sunlight which I imagine would provide warmth. This person is telling people to take baby turtles which are hatched in warm conditions and keep them in a cold tank without access essential uv rays. Quite a different scenario really.
  7. We told the customer about the turtles needs but he wouldnt have a bar of it, reckoned the breeder was right. We do have care sheets to give out

  9. Thats what the customer said, and motioned around like the guy was local
  10. I work in a pet store and a customer came in today to get some things for his new turtle. He was informed by the breeder, who apparently "is one of the big breeders of turtles and has owned a few pet shops around here" that his red eared slider hatchling does not need heat or uv lighting. I was very concerned by this as Im sure you all will be, I hate to think how many people he has given this terrible advice to! At least the tank had a filter I guess
  11. Shame about the koura but the rest look to be doing well! Look forward to seeing them on thursday night
  12. Hi all! The Bay Fish and Reptile Club will meet on Thursday the 21st of this month at Natures Place in the historic village on 17th ave. Time is from 7pm onwards. We will be planning and beginning aquascaping a tank especially for the club which will be on display at Natures Place! Bring along your imaginations and any spare tank decor you have laying around. We will be planning each detail of the tank (layout, fish and plant stocking, filtration, stand options, etc.) and where appropriate will have talks/demonstrations on various parts. Hope to see you all there! New members welcome
  13. Wow thats really cool! So much history in the BOI
  14. He's looking good! I will come and visit him later on this week
  15. Someone said on the quake thread here that they were going into the aquarium, I wonder if it was the same person?
  16. I like that! So leopards need calcium supplementation, just calcium or should it be a multivitamin? I remember you said Alan that fat soluble vitamins can build up to toxic levels... This concerns me a bit, how do I tell how much is too much?
  17. Is the black silica sand fine enough for adult turtles? The aqua one stuff
  18. Thank for that alan I agree that turtles are becoming throw away pets, its terrible to see. I want to make sure I know what Im getting into so I can fully meet the needs of whatever I decide on. Wasnt after a cuddly pet as such, but it would be neat if it could sit on my lap while I watch tv or have time out in the house when cats are away. Not really possible with a leopard but would a beardie do that? I really like the fact that leopards dont need lighting or as much space, but Im concerned that I might not be able to supply the amount of live insects they need. Also am concerned that my cats might eat them, they are evil genius cats.
  19. I had not considered a turtle, I like the reeves and snakenecks. I already have lots of fish tanks so would like to try something dry
  20. Im not so keen on water dragons, they make me nervous with their claws and whippy tails. I would like to be able to handle it. How do the needs of the bearded dragons differ to that of the leopards?
  21. Thank you all for coming! A good time was had by all :happy1:
  22. I have been spending more time around reptiles and they are really growing on me. I think I would possibly like to have one, but first I need to think about what type to get and how to house it. I have a basic knowledge of their needs but any advice will help My favourites so far are bearded dragons, leopard geckos and tortoises. The last two may be out of reach budget wise but you never know. I have access to some tanks at work, one is 92x38x36cm and holds water, the other is 122x45x49cm and has a cracked base and raised bracing on the bottom. Would either of these be suitable for housing the above or other reptiles? Also how much space does a tortoise require, and do they get lonely? Sorry about all the questions!
