  1. I'm looking for a spa pool or similar sized vessel to create a pond for my turtles. Must be in Northland, the further north the better (I'm in Kaitaia). Will happily pay for delivery or can arrange to collect but it may take a bit of time. What's out there?
  2. I'm setting up several new tanks and am wanting some plants! I'm after Anubias, Java ferns or Congo fern, Crypts and hopefully a Tiger Lotus. Must be able to ship please. What's out there?
  3. Hi there, I am helping an elderly lady with her new aquarium and she has been reading about good plants to put in with her fantail goldfish. She asked me to see if I could find these plants, does anybody have some they would like to sell and ship to Northland? Thanks in advance!
  4. I'm putting feelers out there for a very large glass aquarium, don't want a hood as it will be going outside on a covered deck for a native project. At least 4ft, scratches are fine but must hold water and no chips or sharp edges. Stand optional, glad lids prefferrred but not essential. I'm in Kaitaia and have limited transport options so hoping for something in Northland. What's out there?
  5. Hi there! I work in a small vet/pet store in the Far North, and we have 2 RES who are 2 years old, a male and a female. Our boss has agreed to an indoor pond for the turtles (Those of you from Tauranga may remember Animal Antics pond at Owens Place, this is what I had in mind basically). I have seen a design which I like, but want to downscale. The build is here: https://imgur.com/a/ykVGu I have a few questions about the design/build. To save on costs, instead of using a rubber trough, could we build a frame, cover it in old carpet and use a plastic pond liner? Or will their claws go right through? I estimate that we have space for a 1m diameter at most. Is it wise to use sand on the island area like they have in the link? I was thinking of using marine ply covered in astroturf. I will be making a DIY internal filter and possibly incorporate a water feature in to the return.
  6. I set Goldie up in a new 150L tank last night, she seemed very pleased with the extra room! The growth is very large, bright red and shiny. Part of it became damaged when we moved her, it appears to be bright red flesh rather than a sac of blood if that makes sense. So far I am treating her with Epsom salt and clean water in the hope that it will remove some fluid buildup... The streak in the tail looks like a bright red vein, is this what you mean by a blood streak or is it more of a delineated area of red? I work in a vet clinic so have access to antibiotics, is trisul effective or only furan? Thanks in advance
  7. That was my thought. Can it be treated?
  8. Hi everyone, I'd just like to start by saying this is not my fish, it belongs to a client and they have come to me for help. Goldie is about 18cm and lives in a 65L tank alone, I am unsure of her age. She was rescued from a pond which had dried up a few years ago when she was much smaller. I am trying to obtain a sample of water to test, currently the owner is doing approx 1/4 water changes every few days. There is a filter which has not had much maintenance in some time. Goldie is active and has a big appetite but gets very stressed with disruption to the tank. I was sent the following photos of the growth, but I am not sure what advise to give her. It started with a swollen gill plate. The tail pic shows a slight red streak which may or may not be related. I assume this could be caused by water quality or by an infection, can anyone enlighten me? Is this reversible or improvable? What is it? Thanks very much for your time.
  9. I have come across a product which sounds intriguing, it is called "Splosht" and is a natural water treatment. Apparently it is a flocculent, consumes sludge and organic waste and reduces nitrates, phosphates and ammonia levels. It comes as a sachet which you put in the tank and change every 2 weeks. Has anyone used this product or heard anything about it? I'm keen to give it a try but want to know if it does all it claims...
  10. Are Blueys restricted further north as well as Auckland? I tried to find out but nobody at the council, maf (mpi) or doc could tell me... I'm very interested in this story, looking forward to further developments
  11. I'm in Kaitaia and have access to all the species mentioned, depending on how much you're wanting to pay for them.
  12. We have one which looks like a female in our store, the only problem is we are in Kaitaia but I would happily ship in the new year or might possibly be able to arrange delivery...
  13. Ahh that's a clever trick, I'll have to remember that one! They are slippery devils
  14. I'd love to see the looks on their faces! They had a good giggle when I logged in today. I'm typically known as "The Mad Fish Lady" Turns out the fish was a borneo sucker, and was labelled as such, and has on the label a temperature range of 18-24 degrees. I was given a very different sequence of events... And as far as the staff knew the customer left smiling, and were quite upset and confused to hear about this feedback. Remember there are 2 sides to every story... Even I have trouble catching Borneos, they are a difficult fish to handle as they DON'T want to come off the glass. I usually gently scoot them to the top lip of the tank and nudge them back into the net (hope that makes sense). I remember talking to you about your Killi tank! Thank you for your kind words, now the great service is in the Far North I'm also considering doing in-home tank maintenance as I was in Tauranga if there is enough demand for it. At present I am in store Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday
  15. Hi everyone, just thought I would point out that I am in charge of the fish department at this store now. We are at the vet clinic on Empire Street. Rest assured the fish are in good hands! I have had over 8 years experience and at my last position at Animal Antics in Tauranga I was responsible for 200 tanks. I have also been president of the Bay Fish and Reptile Club in Tauranga, am a qualified Vet Nurse, and have a Certificate in Finfish Culture from Mahurangi Tech. I have made a couple of changes and am working on growing the hobby in the Far North. I am working on bringing the rest of the staff up to speed, but if you happen to be in-store and I'm not there or the others aren't able to solve your problem, ask them nicely to give me a call or leave your details. I'm only too happy to help! We can indeed have fish shipped from the major suppliers, and have a good range of aquatic plants. I can source most things that you might be after Come in and check it out, you won't be disappointed

Regarding the incident in the original post, this must have happened either with the old owner or just after the takeover. I have worked there for the last 3 months and we have not had any plecos for sale at all, and the bristlenoses we had were stock that came along with the store. I am working on bringing the rest of the staff up to speed, but if you happen to be in-store and I'm not there or the others aren't able to solve your problem, ask them nicely to give me a call or leave your details. If anyone has some spare plants that can be shipped, let me know and I might be keen! Thanks in advance
  18. I just moved to the far north and was wondering if there was a club up this way?
