  1. spend most of their time under rocks, so you dont get to see them very much. if you are turning over rocks while looking for things, please put the rock back in the same position. e.g right way up
  2. legs broken off ? thats why they call them brittle stars - defence mechanism
  3. no on the top, to let the heat escape, is yours a solid roof ? i make an mdf frame with mesh attached
  4. he is looking for food when i approach the tank but wont take it from the hand yet the jardini does though
  5. maybe the worm is breeding, never heard of this before sounds like one of those african or S american worms that burrow under the skin and lay eggs
  6. i run mesh on the all glass ones to let the heat out in summer
  7. trapped 2 more younger ones this morning in the same area found the entry hole too
  8. most of the ones i have seen are between 10 - 30cm
  9. was a dirty little weasel maybe i got them all so now the rat population is growing have bait stations and fenn traps around the property, thats why we are putting up the predator fence some of axys outside, but golden breeders and harlequin,(well spotted anyway) inside
  10. depends on size of fish, have kept them in 4 foot plus tanks before can sometimes be found on mount beach during and after a good onshore storm, they get stressed in wave action, puff up then are poor swimmers and get pushed to the shore if you can get to them early enough and into a bucket of saltwater they calm down and deflate, if they aren't too damaged they last quite a while in tanks keeping is same as other local marines but they can take bites out of other fish if hungry, can take a while to settle
  11. yes axy is dead, he had started eating it from the back while it was alive, had to put it down noticed a lot of my fans are missing from next pond, rat traps out tonight
  12. I've caught and eaten 10 - 12 inch ones top of australia very nice too
  13. wouldn;t it have been cheaper and bigger to put a small conservatory off the lounge then when "she who must be obeyed" was annoyed with you , you could have been in the dog, no reptile house
  14. Just shot a rat he jumped into the axolotl pond outside, caught an adult axy dragged it out and started eating it  lucky the air rifle was handy
  15. No No on the mixing of these 2 it will save on feeding the turtles if you do you won't have to feed the axys either as they will end up dead
  16. our aro has been reluctant to eat since we got him so ive been feeding mice to get him going the Jardini grabbed a mouse today, but it was too big for his mouth, he swam around with the front half hanging out the aro lunged and took the front piece completely off, the jardini spent the next 2 hours sulking at the back of the tank
  17. sorry for the comments Broms i only open my mouth to change feet ! i imagine you did some crawling to get that beauty, in the house even nice set up !
  18. wow Broms you finally got a red male beardie, seems to have a few scales missing on the top though. is that from bumping on the glass or is the female giving him a hard time? looks well fed mate. thats not a house extension, it is a small home unit by itself congrats
  19. sadly this has been done on fish in N.Z. before, was many years ago though.
  20. we have the hot water bore, 52c , 9,000 gals per hour, i'll dig the pond Who's got the fish ?
  21. i agree there are only 2 species, not colour fed i think these were bred to retain the red colouration of the young fish, they were only 2 1/2 footers though so still young
  22. have seen some amazon aros called red tailed arowana on some sites they had red tails and fins and red edge on scales on flanks of body the red is not brilliant red like the asians though
  23. if you put 2 pure white canaries together you have a chance of losing 50% of the chicks as there is a lethal gene in this recessive trait i think you probably could put 2 blues together and breed them, depending on the gene you should get all or mostly blue young, the only thing is you dont probably know how much line breeding or inbreeding has gone on to produce them breeding to a normal is the longer way round but maybe safer with 4 fish you maybe able to try both combinations of pairing but you will need to keep track of what is what in the young others more experienced may be able correct me if im wrong
  24. should have added i always put some thread tape on the fittings helps cut down leakage problems
  25. why do you need a normal to breed them with ? is it a recessive gene?
