  7. yes we feed crickets no they haven't nibbled on the dragons crickets breed in the water dragons enclosure
  8. yes, dont need water flow but it improves their life
  9. might possibly be chytrid fungus, frogs need to be kept slightly cooler than room temp could be other fungus as well http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/npw ... rid+fungus need to clean tank or dont use for other amphibs mark
  10. In the dragons eyes you are a bigger predator get them as young as you can as David said handle them at least twice a day catch your dragon and hold firmly sit down and start stroking the sides of his head, talk to it in a calm voice, doesn't matter what you say so long as the tone is calm. you need to be calm as well the dragon will feel the attitude in your body as the dragon calms down you can release your grip slightly do not let the dragon go they are fast and if you spend half an hour chasing him you will further reinforce that you are a bigger predator to escape from We have 2 you can handle and 2 that are not as petable one of those things in life where you get out what you put in
  11. you werent supposed to see the tank til you got back Gannet forgot you were still cruising these posts This is Gannets tank we setup before he left got an even bigger tank than your one as well Gannet setup the right hand rockwork and I did the left lot My wife Caroline calls the fishroom sky TV because there are so many channels to watch. We have always had a tank in the lounge since we got together
  12. like the trap idea, good use for all my coke bottles, ryan could use a bait catcher and make the hole smaller dont want to pull the tank apart as it will be a mission to catch all the biggies out, stress ful on the fishies too will use the trap to catch out the breeders and do them seperately in smaller tanks the young have survived so far in the gaps in the rocks, some are getting pretty cheeky though dicing with death got a bumble bee, another yellow and a powder blue holding as well bait catcher worth a try i think
  13. have some young electric yellows and peach malawis in my big tank about 30 all up any ideas on how to get them out without ripping tank apart? sorry for blurry photos one of the littlys where he is the tank they're in 240cm x 60cm x 60 cm
  14. this guy was red all over when born, some of the others in same batch had lovely red markings on them got this one as i thought might produce some nice variations, is currently with a half sister from same male just shed in this one
  15. yes there are a few around i think our gene pool is fairly small, so a few yellow and orange reds have started appearing, possibly from some inbreeding of the animals in nz some animals have also been infertile
  16. there are clear plastic roll up sides and heat pads under floor, we bring them inside for the coldest months though want to setup a solar hot water system for heating and see if that improves it
  17. so if your axy for some reason spontaneously changed he would become undesirable ambystoma mexicanum is an allowed species, is it not? now we get to the fine part or interpretation of the law
  18. a good article, haven't seen the approach of injecting thyroxine before seems to work on a scientific basisand dose rates are given do you know if there is a follow up article on longevity of subject animals i have always felt that changes to them in a mature state were harder on their physiology than in a younger animal have changed only a few adults but a lot more youngsters my brother and i fed them thyroid gland from abbatoir and changed a few this is over 35 years ago, changed a few young ones about 15 years ago with gland, iodine and water reduction, they lasted quite a few years.
  19. sorry wilson if i made an assumption on what you wanted it for my apologies people who have had thyroid problems or removal take this usually in pill form
  20. yes i have had salamanders in the past was going to try on some goldens, but didnt get round to it. ended up selling all the young go to freezing works and see if you can get some thyroid glands from sheep, and feed this in small amounts you'll need to find a cooperative knifehand also small amounts of marine iodine in water and slowly lower water level do this with young axys under 2 inches. older ones if they do change dont live very long the big problem with changing them is the axolotyl in the pet trade is one that tends to stay in the larval form (axolotl) it was easier for scientists to keep and breed these for study into limb regeneration
  21. kills a lot more axolotls than it changes to salamanders have to know what your doing
  22. we run adults in fully planted enclosures, potting mix sand etc, but wouldnt run young animals on same footing potting mixes can contain bacteria and pathogens harmful to young lizards and even humans Also the temp you need to keep them at will dry out plants, so you will need to water more often which will raise the humidity, which will make a lovely environment for fungi and moulds that might impinge on your dragons respiratory system In an enclosed system there is not the airflow there is in a bigger environment as repto said on another thread, at the price they are why take the chance :-?
  23. they make a nice pet Gatito post some up here if you want to
  24. probably my call too dennis over the years i have bred a lot of axys, but not had one with the spots so well defined before bought it on trademe a few weeks ago David i have tried the white x black before and only got the odd blotched yes repto she is well fed
