  1. i will try going in from the top instead of the side and see if that works
  2. i have a big needle in that size olly i am worried that if i hit the liver or kidney i will do some damage on a normal fish you go in just under the lateral line from the side to expel all the air no lateral line on the porcupine going in through the mouth would be an option but the jaws are very strong and it wouldn't let go of the needle once gripped on fish will not deflate while it has something stuck in it iit seems to be swimming lower in the tank will gas in the bladder possibly dissipate over time? sedation is an option but i haven't tried that before stella suggestions?
  3. when saltwater fishing some fish that come up from deep water have inflated swim bladders i usually deflate these using a 22g hypodermic needle inserted into the swim bladder and let excess air out my problem at the moment is a porcupine fish that every time i stick the needle in it inflates to the size of a small melon and i can't reach the swim bladder any thoughts ideas or a 4 inch 22g needle somewhere
  4. proper glass drill and a cordless drill on slow, need to keep the saw wet to cool it down most toughened glass is stamped but i don't know if that is the case with moulded fish tanks
  5. sadly without proof it is hard to point a finger, a witness or video evidence of that person entering the fish room would be good if the person refuses to let the police view their fish a search warrant would be needed then you would need to prove the fish they had was your one, ie unique, special colour, markings etc the best idea is to ban that person from your property as you believe they were responsible for your missing fish tell anyone you know who associates with them what you believe as well you can't accuse someone without proof but you can come to a belief through circumstantial evidence
  6. just drilled 2 tanks today as has been said syphon is not fool proof so i have replaced mine with drilled overflows happy to help if needed
  7. it is relatively easy to drill an existing tank, just needs to be fairly empty and not toughened glass i have a glass drill here
  8. so long as it is plumbed properly not a problem are you using an overflow box or a syphon?
  9. no worries usually it is best to leave them alone and let nature take its course, not nice but the best this one was in the surf and being mobbed, a little underweight and exhausted about a week TLC and some food should see it right for release again they need 3 x daily swims to promote oiling again sadly we are lucky if we can save 30% of the ones brought in as they are usually past the point of no return when we get them
  10. we hold a licence to look after injured wildlife stella nymox is helping us out and learning in the process soo he can help with our future work
  11. a possibility alan, he doesn't have any water proofing
  12. in my experience judging by the color mystic that is one angry or stressed occie pale colouration is worried , camouflaged is you can't see me after awhile and settled down they may put on a light show for you, red with white rings moving up and down the tentacles an occie that is happy in its tank won't try climbing out, that is why it is best to get young individuals and grow them on when really small they spend a lot of time hiding, i find a lot in beer bottles in the habour they learn quickly and come for food i used to tap my fingernails on the front of the tank to let one know it was food time we were sitting in front of the tank having dinner a few months later and i could hear a tapping noise coming from the tank the occie was tapping 2 stones together to tell me to feed it
  13. basically sensitive to all water parameters young occies acclimatise to tank life quite easily, older ones can commit suicide they are very intelligent and older ones like their freedom they will eat most tankmates and can fight for territory when housed together i have had most success with young ones and growing them on
