yes have had java fern do the same in the newts tank,
growing on the moss
had lids on tank as well to keep humidity up
are you planting in the corners as well?
nice, xmas or java moss will grow nicely on the exposed piece
i start it off at waterline with about 12mm up the branch and same below waterline
this allows water to "wick" up to the exposed bit and keep it moist

if its a mallard you may not have much joy
animal rescue and rehabilitation centre have a branch in rotorua i think

or dampen a cotton bud and wipe away at the skin, keep the cotton bud wet don't pull at the skin as you can easily damage good skin underneath leaving a wound prone to infection.
