  1. Wicked Name Cadeusus Welcome to the forum. Some sort of obstruction is definately indicated especially as there was no free blood from Minces description. Lets hope egss hold mate and that you have better luck next time? Always hard to having things like this happen Nav
  2. Pretty much the same as Alan. But I also have lights on a timer ( they do add some heat) and back up heaters in my sumps I have found that having a well insulated room is a big thing and this can not be over stated. Running some 50 tanks is no more expensive in a well inulated room than runing 6 in a poorly insulated area. So before you move stuff in to teh sleep out make sure you test there are few gaps, drafts etc. Oh a few Draughts is ok tho. Navarre
  3. I have done something liek what has been described above with glued pressure pipe. However I have in my 6 ft tank run teh spray bar to the bottom of the tank. This means that any debrie in my rock work is pushed up and out depending on the angle of the spray bar. It also means that there are swirls or current coming across the rocks so that even though there is around 3000 l an hour of return it is diffuse. I did have to experiment with my antisyphon hole which I drilled at an angle upwards and into the return pipe just on water level. I have never had the tank back syphon and I use white gravel and rocks but as I am relatively slack on water changes it is hard to tell...lol In a 4 ft tank I have my return plumbed into a series of under gravel plates with my rockwork on top. A reverse undergarvel filter so to speak and this to works well but only with fish that dont dig teh rock work about. HTH Navarre
  4. Generally bright red is blood in teh rectum ( yes damn near killed them) and the darker the red the higher up the bowel the bleed if that is what you are thinking. Maybe she perforated/ruptured something during her laying? Certainly an internal bleed of some sort would aslo be an indication if she was dehydrated as well Navarre
  5. I have thought about this in the past and would suggest maybe some of the other fast growing plants such as ambuglia or cabomba, maybe water sprite as they seem to be faster growing so might be better "strippers" Another point might be a long coil of thin black tubing running slowly from refugeim to sump/tank to act as a dentryfing coil. I havent done thsi but I think there used to be heaps of articles on teh krib yeasr ago. HTH Navarre
  6. LOL at ice cubes. had to make sure the right ones went in the gin Alan? Anyway several health works also have turts of various kinds in their waiting areas. hygine hygine hygine Navarre
  7. I have one running on my 6 ft tank with the chocloates in it as well as a sump Very Good.
  8. Marble Queen? Alan might remember the name E cordatus or something...I have teh memory of a swiss cheese maker so....
  9. LA, does the turt you "glassed" still shed scutes and stuff and how long did the "glass" stay in place? Did you manage to leave a small gap to treat any infection or cover the whole thing. The good thing about Larval therapy is that maggots only eat decaying flesh so they are great at getting rid of anything that is rotten or dead. Problem with them is that they secreate enzymes that damage healthy flesh so they have more to eat...lol That is why the medical grade ones now come in little tea bags so we dont have to count them in or out like we used to and that the area they inhabit is limited...lol. Still good things tho not as much fun to play with as the leaches...lol Navarre
  10. forgot to mention Superglue. Sorry Skin or tissue glue is just medical grade 2 part glue that is used to "stitch" kids and some face lacs. That may be an option for some of those shell cracks and holes? It may also not work but it was something I was thinking of today Good luck LA and keep up the good work Navarre
  11. Thats a good heal LA The reason I suggest no honey is whilst it is an old remady and it does occasionally work it uses High sugar content to kill bugs. My Gran swore by it. That and spiders web This high sugar content also creates a large osmotic pull which in humans does increase blood flow to the area thus perfusing the area with TIMPS MMPs and other white blood cells it can also cause pain related to localised inflamatory response. This coupled with the thermoreglatory and digestive process turts have and the way they excreate uric acids etc would, I have guessed, not be advisable especially when their kidneys and general cardiovascular and circulatory sytem has already been insulted. The link listed probably sugests UMHF which is a Unique Manuka Honey factor found in NZ Manuka Honey. This is great for my sore throat as I use Comvita Honey Lozenges ( Thanks Trudi) for that but I wouldnt put it in a Wound. Ag ( Thats Silver) comes in 3 active forms for wound care Nanocrystaline, Ionic and Coloidal ( how ever its spelt) Any Ag in parts of (if memory serves me correctly) 1/1000000 come out of solution. Ag salts and crystals are cytotoxic to fibroblasts and lukocytes. (these are the bits that heal wounds). Silver in this concentration is also hepato and nephro toxic and trace can be found in the lymph of humans in even smaller doses so I would be careful of using it in an animal with such a low and slow weight and metabolism. Silvazine was in its time leading edge dressing cream for burns et al and it uses nanocrystaline Ag. Once open this expensive cream can grow bugs in the medium it uses to transport the Ag. As for internet experts. I have already stated I dont have much nouse when it comes to Turts but I am working on that. However I am a paramedic with St John a RCpN with a PGDip and was for 5 years the top sales manager and then the international Marketing manager for a multinational company whom made and sold the countries leading dressings. So this is something I know a smidge about That how ever is beside the point the silverzine may be a good way to treat the local infection but it is water soluble to a point so may also need to be applied more than once per day. I would avoid the turt eating it and it can be brought form the chemist and i think it retals for around $70 a tube but talk to your local medical sales people ( I think Capes are near you LA) re a near expired one perhaps HTH Navarre
  12. HI Guys, I am not a vet and I am only trying to help so please dont take this the wrong way. Also I have not been been involved in Tx repts like this before so... I would be carefully of the Hydrogen peroxide it is a strong oxidisng agent and it will kill infection but it will also kill the healthy cells that are produced in wound healling so please keep that in mind. The iodine/betadine solutions also fall into this catagory and are also accumualtive in the kidney. We no longer use this type of solution for wounds as it causes more harm than it does good. I know nothing about baytril etc and so wont comment on that. Saline baths are good for low grade infex and you guys will know more about that than me in this case but again be aware of osomtic pull and its effects on the kidneys when they have already had a traumatic insult such as in this case. Wound chanels are indeed less likely to infex or sinus (Heal at the top but not the bottom) if deep and not packed but I would not use gauze to do this as it leaves fibres and can make any infex worse. Also do not use honey or colloidal silver as again these are conta indicated in wound healling ( yes I know Ag dressings but it is different and Honey is a wifes tale). So finally if I can give you one piece of advise it wouldl be this pick one tx regime and stick to it. Dont mix and match. If it fails then you know what has failed and can tailor the next soultion to the problem, whilst hopefully minamilsing the impact on the turt. Hope it is doing well and it is a good thing it is still eating and drinking. HTH Nav
  13. LOL at near drownings. A few Christmas's ago I was diving near Cape Komeru (Spelling) in Marlbrough Sounds and got tangled in an underwater current at 28 m. Got sucked along pretty well. ended up out just past the Brothers Next Stop Wellington when the current turned and we end up uner Bald Hill when we were picked up. Anyway Surfaced with my buddy and spent the next 3.5 hours in the water. Good thing we had safety sausages deployed and we swam accross current. God Bless Dry suits eh. Anyway traveled in a loop thing nearly 22 miles. We got picked up and had a cup of soup. everyone was well pleased to see us and the skipper said well fellas what do you want to do now. I laughed and said what do you mean and he said well do you want to go home or what and I said well you can put another tank on my gear and get me to a dive site I have just had a four hour surface interval while you lot were mucking around you know. My Missus hit me....that hurt. LOL
  14. Padi MSDT Since 2000 Sunshine coast Chathams Stewart Island Tory entrance and Lermentov are fav spots 7-800 dives maybe qualied in Wellington with Tony at Titahi Bay and Moby Dicks in Christchurch
  15. Well Blond's are a mans best friend Oh I may have mixed that up...my mistake...sorry Anyway barrie thast a good idea to put pics of fish on the tanks. Hmmmmmmmbeer Hmmmmmmmmblonds Hmmmmmmmmblondsnbeeer Hmmmmmmmmmbannedifikeepthisup hmmmmmmmmmm
  16. Hey there Josh, If you find out where any harlequins are can you let me know. Repto has my contact details if you dont want to PM me. They do look stunning in the wild but are really hard to see. After 6 trips (totalling 70 days) I have only ever seen 2 and spent an hour watching one under a 44 gallon drum...lol. Maybe if I am luck I will get some photos next time...lol. Navarre
  17. Sounds great. Basicly the only rule is break all the rules Woudl be greatto see soem more photos as this tank developes Navarre
  18. The rugby ball is a good idea but I find tha teh dogs can get a grip on the "thin" end and puncture them so I have used soccer balls with success. Only thing is you need to keep them pumped up. HTH Navarre
  19. LOL you try telling that to a 38kg 18 month old Bull Terrier. Especially when you are teh one tryingto get the blardy thing out of his mouth. He destroys those things and the solid balls are quickly minced...but that is ok cause they are easy to bait him with in the show ring...lol...especially when filled with Peanut butter..lol. See here...www.boxtonandtennille.com to see some photos...lol. Another idea might be a "holey roller" if you can find any. I like the bigger ones cause they can be kicked and thrown or the "rubber rings" which are great cause you can throw them like a frisby and they come with toothy cleaning rubber spikey things so dogs get dental hygine and exercise. HTH Navarre
  20. IMHO I woudlnt worry about CO2. you have used aqua base which I think has ferts in it and JBL bals as well ...is that right? Also dont ditch the rock, the balance looks ok and it splits the line of the tank. I generally mass plant so if you have a group of plants put them all in the same area to "fill" it in. I also like tall at back and low in front and as you wont want to vax the gravel I usually leave a fair amount of space around plants when first planting up to give them room to establish and also water change without disturbing the roots etc. One suggestion might be tall plants behind the DW and the rock with low plants in front of the rock trailing off towards the DW so as to lead the eye from one to the other. You could then leave and unplanted margin in front of those plants at the very front of the tank that then pushes the fish forward for you to view whilst still giving them cover. Does that make sense? Also I woudl stay away from MH. Expensive, hot, and not needed. With the right plants and water change regime you shoudl be fine if you pick teh right K of tube. Whilst your LFS if it is good can help with that it is often cheeper to go to a hydroponics or specialist lighting shop. HTH Oh also I woudl establish tank and plants and cycle slowly adding a few fish at a time so as to not cause and algae bloom with all those ferts. You could also dose with PMDD ( see HaNs for that) to help get the ball rolling. Navarre
  21. HI There, A kong last about 30 mins with my Bullie. How ever the solid "mint balls" ( thats enuff Living Art) last much longer. The smaller sizes fit in the throw thing but are harder to throw cause they are heavier. Do not use criket or hockey balls as these have a sold core and a hard outer but can crack and in the middle is miles of rubber like a big rubber band and your dog can choke on these. master pet have some solid tennis balls I think. Good luck ...lol effort is well worth it eh? Navarre
  22. I stand corrected Just worried about Boyles law heat + pressure affecting teh volume of gas in a stove...and my belly LOL and its a problem when you make more than one loaf you have all those half cans hmmmmmmm beeeerrrrrrr LMAO Navarre
  23. Or this Beer bread 3 cups high grade flour 3 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 can beer (you need 400ml so make rest up with water after washing out can, dont use low alcohol beer) 1/2 cup grated cheese Preheat oven to 200c Spray a standard loaf tin with non stick spray mix flour salt and bp then add beer, mix until combined sprinkle cheese on top bake for 50-60 mins tip out on a rack to cool does not keep well but great fressh or toasted the next day
