Well if you look at a lot of the tanks from off shore they are set up for a short dislpay time then taken down or they have very few fish in them a big kick ass filter is more hassell than hoff in these types of tanks as they do nothing to create the conditions you are striving to maintain IMHO. however there are as many opinions on that as there are plant keepers so it is up to you and trial or trail and error. you are better working out a landscape and fish list and working conditions to that. I for example turned co2 off as it drove my plants and i got odd algaes and unnatural growth. some cats are also ok in my type of set up but others arent due to lo o2 saturations so fish choice is limited. I choose not to have fish that were "messy" to help reduce need for filter I also feed small amounts to help reduce mulm there fore remove need to vac gravel and mulm settles into gravel easier and self fertilises plants another thing is to maintain these tanks takes a long time...much like a marine tank it took me ages to get to a point where i am now as plants had to establish and fill in there fore when i started I did more water changes vacs etc than i do now. as a mater of fact this tank is much more liek a marine coral tank than a plant tank for me a little and slowly rather than fast and furrious. just without teh big set up costs...lol It will be interestingto watch your tank develop Good luck and keep us up to date -

Why use a filter at all What will your stock list be? I have a tank nearly the same as yours I have a layer of ferts about a cm deep then a layer of sand about 2 cm deep then a 2-4 cm layer of fine gravel I am growing an amazon sword and 4 types of crypts and some dwarf sag I have lights a plenty and it used to have a CO2 injector but I have taken that away I have NO filtration apart from the plants I run guppies yes just guppies started with a few now have a few more and the tank has been unchanged for about 7 years I think do a yearly glass clean and it gets a water change about 3 -4 times a year I feed little and infrequently. Only water movement is via thermoconduction of heater pulling water around it as hot h20 rises. and yes I would like to show you a photo but my camera is crud if you want natural why do anything else Navarre -

I should know these things but... isnt it illeagal to have a loaded wepon in a vehicle isnt it ill logical to not identify whats behind your target ( thats why spotlighting is discouraged) but yes I have done that so no throwing stones there isnt it illeagal to fire a firearm within 200 m of a access way or road? isnt it stupid to randomly go down a road without knowing what is down that road what is on either side of that road or without seeking landowners permission. and I wonder why after 25 years of hunting it is becoming harder and harder to find places to go and be welcomed like in the ol days go figure -
Welcome Andy I have seen some of your posts on other forums and I am sure we will be glad of your knowledge Navarre

Staining from tear ducts all dogs get it just more noticable in whites Nice Pup Bulldogod. Shouldnt need to much sunscreen as at 7 weeks has good ish pigment on nose Also has some ticking on ears and lips so hopefully that will come thru as well. Might have been a less of a worry if the pup already had pigment thru on lips and eye rims but i see it has pink pads as well so might not come thru like that. Good luck they are a hand full at this age eh?

Same appologies for the highjack Well done on your first spawn and may there be many more Navarre -
Good luck with Troph's They certanly are great fish and breeding them is a big buzz. Pity we have such few strains here when you see options overseas. LOL I remember when I breed them a few years ago. 40 fish at 60 each was a lot of money especially when I came back from a week at sea and flat mate had bloated the whole tank. LOL little bloaters that they are Hope she holds for you smidey How are other fish going?

I dont mind if you breed your fish together and I am into the africans as much as anyone. If I cant tell you where I got the folks from I will also tell you that I cant be sure. But I NEED to be sure I am Sure when I sell you something Cause I am only as good as my word. FULL STOP I think some hybrids have all the things those in favour of hybridisation claim. Vigour. Colour. Temprement etc But you dont get them unless you have "pure" stock to start with. With our ever tightening borders it is important to keep clean stuff clean. Simple as that What you do with your fish is up to you. If you wish to breed jacobergifryeri bergis with Stuartgrani then thats ok..they are all Nyassae anyway. But why when you cant gett pure fish here anymore anyway except from one or two people . In some woulrds teh breeders are deamed " the gaurdians" of breed type. Why should that be any different for us I am not here, and neither should anyone else be, to pass judgement. But not many if any ( ta Scribe) have the same morals hence all the discussion. What was asked was a fair question. It demands a fair and honest answer. If I am going to pay big $$ for my fish I need to be assured they are what I am paying for. Hope that sheds some light P44, definately gives smidey teh lecture he was asking for...lol...sory mate...couldnt resist....and hopefully makes some think about what and how they do it. Navarre -

Ah I remeber stage one chemistry. Slept thru the whole year as it was at 8 am on a friday morning and it would have been rude not to have gone to the Yaldy every thursday . Had this great band called shoptalk. about 20 of us used to go every week. Used to get home at 6 shower breakfast then to the lab sleep til 12 then next class home by 3 sleep go out then off to rugby...those were the days and we used to get 7 of us in a morri land crab ( fish reference) and whilst a few guys caught the odd disease not sure any of them were fungal. any way airation is a must I guess in a coke bottle but it would be good to have an update of fishy wounds

Well as some of you know I used to travel for a living but am now Christchurch based. However between now and mid November I will be again heading to Invercargill and Blenhiem as well as the West Coast ( there is only one West Coast the other is on the west coast) so if anyone wants any fish transported please let me know and I will update with dates when I get trips sorted Navarre

I have thought a bit ...and only a bit about what you say about interbreeding. And on one level I have to agree that the future of our hobby is in the "look" of fish. I mean I mostly got into this beacuase I liked the "look" of fish not all the hard work that goes into it...lol so hybrids do have their place maybe? The other side of that coin is that by mixing populations to create new and more variance you risk losing the traits of the original population that made it attractive in the first place. especially when that population cannot be replaced in NZ.....does that make sense? and thanks for the quote...I think thats the first time some one has quoted me and not been taking the mickey...lol.
