Very nice! would look wicked with metal halides!!!- especially with the wave maker
-
Mbuna Hybrid unless you have a number like this
-
They hang because they are juvi's and as a co;ony fish they would hang in numbers while young, the young males eventually driven off. You should be safe from any skirmishes relating to territories for quite a while yet. The cave is probably the preffered hiding spot at this stage. Maybe have some hidey spots right around the cave if there isn't already. If you did have breeding in mind down the future then bldg up and introducing them young would be the go.

What is a flathead gold nugget. It is a name given to a fish by a wholesaler who doesn't have a positive ID from his American supllier hence the price he can get it for, so after six weeks of Quarantine he can get it to a RRP of less than 2 hundy. Phoenix you are right- that fish is definitely not a flathead gold nuggget because there is no such thing, so why continue with the nomenclature L67 is the fish you and I have. Simian -I can't see well enough from your shot, but it is not unlikely that it is another species using the same common name that is unique to our market. L017? other recent examples. L254 brought in as L128 Unknown peckoltia as leopard frog knowing that the name will spark interest and the L# of 134 is assigned by punters who want it to be. The thing that gets me is that there are so many opportunities to get some wicked fish in under this lackadaisical system that fools itself that it is a bio secure/ecofriendly steel trap yet these guys couldn't run a bath.

Relax Mate. At 6cm and one yr old you are 18mths away. your fish's parents were over 3 yrs and 9-10cm and the sexing was only possible at about 8cm. My advice if you want to breed these guys is get another 3-4 over the nxt yr or so and build up a breeding colony.

Flathead gold nugget . Another creative name from Aquaris. It is L67 Pseudancistrus sp. Gets to 20cm and no real history of breeding them.

Got call from daughter in CHCH. On 8th flr of hotel and "very scary"

Then my Daughters 15cm red tail must be gay- runs away from the Angelicus loaches half the size.

Dragged out these old shots.

Lovely tank and fish 4myage. And what a selection you have in there. I rubber band my anubias and java fern to my wood or coral rock and after a few weeks they have rroted in.
-
This is quite an old shot of my guy. I'll try to get a new one in the nxt day or so. He/she is about 13cm now. Look forward to the article flatfish, they are a cool fish.
-
Yeah- oyster shell or coral bits will just add a bit of alkalinity to the tank.
-
I'm with David Congo's and bichir in with the Lionheads. Even a bigger Syno. Buffering your water naturally will do the trick just by the substrate and even chucking like coral bits in your biofilter, but the fish you are putting in are high PH anyway. That setup could even handle a few plants as the anubias suggested or even java fern and would be one cool looking tank.

LOOKS GREAT!

Very Nice! I like the new Aquascaping and the colour combo's in the tank. I once had a brown in with Malawi's for a while with the odd skirmish with individuals but nothing major. You have some awesome peacocks for sure!

Hypanancistrus species should not be confused with other genus of plecs. They require as good water condition as you are prepared to give them, and susceptible to diseases from poor condition which can kill them as much as the ammonia situation or any other theory. The problem with the tank that size is keeping a stable enough environment consistently and these fish appreciate that. Leave the big changes for the breeding program. I'd be doing one bucket a day or two as opposed to 50% weekly for hypans. Current isn't that neccesary as much as oxygenated and well filtered. As with Caryl, avoid the concoction of meds- this will achieve not much more than making the fish into an Elvis.
-
I keep a few plecs as do my friends and this is going to happen. territories, development of Alpha males and heirarchies, gravid females will turn a serene tank environment into a warzone. As flatfish says the stress alone could be the factor. Often damage is inflicted with spikey odontodes of the pectoral fins rasped along the side or belly of adversary. The smaller the victim in comparison the easier to lever un der it and vexpose it weakest point- the belly. I've even seen the mortal wound as no more than a knive like stab from one of those odontodes as the victim was bailed up somewhere. The munched belly could be simply be a bit of scavenging when dead. At anytime JimR's or any other of our plec tank situation could change. The closer they are to a breeding age the more chances of fatalities. Unfortunatley fish have absolutely no concept of their moneytry value and can be exceedingly annoying when they are disrepectful of that fact. You could try more caves or make number of hidey hole options that are seperated by open spaces dividing tank into zones. Sorry for your loss

Yeah the Azureus are still young males from a couiple of spawns in Feb, so they have a little growing to do as well as finding their way with this new tank dynamic, so this why I'll put in another couple of young males. The Dad who is no longer around was about a year old and far more intense in colour and fattening up well until he did the sunken belly wither thing. He spawned 3 times in quick succession and was in with 4 girls. I guess they nagged him to death. This is Dad and one of the murderers and his single days As for chilumbas -I have another 2 girls holding and the fry so far are consistent. With the cuckoo's From what I've heard Red empresses or Electra's. I've heard giraffes as well. It is amazing to see the cuckoo's hanging around when the electras are trying to spawn.
-
Cheers Aqua... After main shot is -Chilumba red flush, I have two young males in and will add a few more soon. -Cuckoo synodontis X7 -they are waiting for electras and red empress's to get busy. The electrsa have tried spawning a few times and cuckoos are cool too watch in that process. I will take all of the synos and haps to another tank soon to try again. -Copadichromis azureus- 2 males to be joined soon by a few more. -1X Otopharynx lithobates. -about 20-25 young demansonis which I'll cull down to a breeding colony. -last fish is Aulonocara rubescens. Have a few yellows my big electra Tank is 600ltrs. My plan is too go 1200-1500 ltr male tank. other peacocks Im growing are jacobs and hueseri. Work in progress aye! Hey Ryan! Yes those azureus-even with the utaka spots they have that fryeri shape eh!- they are breeding true though, same with the Hueseri.yes rubins are mine and that is my oldest boy. Chilumbas are my fav for sure. .

This is the current guise of my main African tank. A combination of coral and greywacke rock, with javaa fern and ambulia nana, one piece of bogwood. Substrate is coral sand. Some residents

Bleeding Heart politics aside. I would imagine that the cost of any enterprise in terms of plant, consumables, and unknowns would mean that the economic viability of such a scheme would be about the same as getting a tinny and catching your fish wildcaught, I know what I would rather. Are any of you aware of the Failed bid of recreation fishers in the Kahawhai legal challenge and the rammifications to our fisheries as a whole, as well as the priority commercial enterprises have over you. And who has major holdings in commercial fishing. By the way. I'm looking out at my very pregnant ewes. My daughter knows that she will enjoy the lamb. Dead and alive.
-
I'd be tempted to remove the SAE with the nugget that small especially if theree is the slightest dispute over territory. Lovely fish!
-
Thats sort of the point of the story-Thanks. I must have higher expectations of the guy who was first in line to the worlds most powerful job. I guess he would have been disappointed on any trips to the Red or Black Seas.
-
True story!-unfortunately

I could say that those pictures are also very close to my juvi Chliumbas in apppearance. I would put them as a Stuartgranti in the hansbaenschi/Royal complex assuming all the young have bred the same. Who knows, but unfortunately the seller should have been more conscientous when buying. You can't go I'ding fish off the net. I did love the comment of Stuartgranti being spanish for Aulonocara Baenschi. Reminds of When Vice President Dan Quayle was asked if he enjoyed his trip to Sth America said Yes, and how he wished he'd done latin at school so he could have talked with the local people. Hang out for some fish with better lineage details.
